27 Dresses meets Bridget Jones’s Diary for the millennial set in Erin Lyon's I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions.
In a world where marriage doesn’t exist—only seven-year contracts—you don’t marry, you sign. You don’t divorce, you breach. And sometimes, you just expire.
Kate is struggling to find her footing. She gave up a career she hated to pursue the law, and now she’s buried in debt and unemployed. At least she’s signed to an amazing guy—hot, sweet, and committed.
Enter the contract killer, the man who pursues only signed women. No commitment, no hassle, all the fun. But Kate has enough fun on her plate… until her partner doesn’t re-up their contract.
After an epic but well-deserved meltdown, Kate gets practical. She accepts a job with her uncle’s law firm, practicing signing law—the one type of law she swore she’d never do. And the contract killer? Now that Kate is single, she’s no longer his type, but he still wants to be friends. Yeah, that’ll work. Kate may be heartbroken, but she’s not impervious to this sexy, smart, and complex man. But hey, it looks like he may not be impervious to her either—signed or not.
Hilariously relatable, with biting wit and charm, I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions is 27 Dresses meets Bridget Jones’s Diary for the millennial set.

Erin Lyon graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English and then worked in broadcast television for ten years before going to law school. She is now a practicing attorney and blames all of the people in her life for not trying to talk her out of the whole “becoming a lawyer” thing (except for her brother who, to be fair, did say, "Really?").
Erin’s first two novels, I LOVE YOU SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING TERMS AND CONDITIONS and UNCONDITIONALLY were published by Forge in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Erin lives in Northern California with her husband of 20 years, her teenage daughter, and a house full of rescue animals.
Well this book was a complete and pleasant surprise! Erin Lyon's debut is a unique and fresh twist on the "non-committal playboy who falls for the girl" storyline. It's addictive and sexy with a mix of humor! I could NOT put it down!
The novel is set in a sort of alternative version of our modern world where people don't get married; they sign contracts instead. The contracts run for 7 years and at the end, you can either re-up or cancel the contract and move on. Instead of divorces, there are breaches of contract. Sounds interesting, right?
So we have Kate, a 34-year old, who's just out of law school and happily signed with her partner, Jonathon. She gets passed over by someone else at the law firm where she interned and desperately needs a job. She meets this guy named Adam at a bar one night. He comes on pretty strong and she knows immediately what he is—a contract killer. Contract killers are guys who only go after those already signed. Why? Well, with someone signed they're already taken so he doesn't have to worry about relationships and signing.
Kate brushes him off but the two fall into an easy conversation and exchange numbers. Then Jonathon drops a bombshell on her by choosing to end their contract, forcing Kate to move in with her parents and reluctantly take a job at her uncle's firm practicing the one area of law she doesn't want to do—signing law.
Now that Kate's not signed, Adam still wants to hang out with her. And he's not dating anyone else. Things get complicated and there are some sizzling moments. I won't tell you anything else so you can read this book for yourself!
I really liked Kate a lot! She was funny, smart, and witty, and I felt like I could relate to her. When she made a bad choice, she would totally call herself on it. I really liked that she was totally self-aware, even when she was being an idiot. Adam is ridiculously attractive guy. He's successful, thoughtful, but also sort of mysterious and incredibly freaking stubborn. He has a more cynical view on love, contrasting with Kate's view on the subject, and doesn't really think signing is for him. I really liked his charisma and the protectiveness towards Kate that he really couldn't control. But good Lord, he is the king of mixed signals. I'm still rooting for you though, Adam.
Adam and Kate have a great connection and effortless way of talking with each other. Their text messages back and forth were really cute, and I just really liked them together. The chemistry was TOTALLY there. This book has one of the best kisses I've read in a long time—super steamy and made me feel giddy with excitement.
This book did have a small case of "every guy is attracted to this girl" vibe going on, which I did find slightly irritating. However, there's only one guy for Kate in her eyes (thankfully). It's definitely not a situation where Kate is torn between guys, stringing both along, and lying to herself in the process—I don't like that. Also, some of the things Kate said seemed a little immature, both in dialogue and her first-person narrative. Personally, I didn't find these things to be distracting. But I just wanted to let you know in case those things—especially the former—is a dealbreaker for you.
There are things that I could critique in this book—like how this book probably didn't need to be split up into two separate books—but for me the entertainment value in this book completely outweighed the issues I had with the book. I just really had a blast reading this book!
If you're a romance reader who enjoys their romance with a side of sharp wit and a whole lot of entertainment, then you need to read this! This book does end on a little bit of a cliffhanger but it was one I saw coming (and could mentally prepare) and it hurt so good! I had so much fun reading this one and am now DYING for the next book.

• I have an Interview with Erin Lyon on the blog tomorrow (January 10th)! Though, some of you may have already read it yesterday since Wordpress was super drunk and published it! • If you want a laugh, you MUST read the article Erin wrote here on "Why Lawyers Should Not Write Romance." She explains why her method of marriage would have saved these couples in classic literature a lot of grief. So funny!

This was sooo good! I just finished and I'm giddy and... really desperate. I need that second book!
I gave up my blog a little over a year ago and this may be the first time that I actually regret it. I wish I had a larger audience to share my thoughts. Contemporary romance readers need to get on this!
I didn't know what I was getting into when I started. I went in blind and was only going on the recommendation of my friend Megan, who loved it. She doesn't love everything so I had a feeling that this was going to be special. I was right. This had all the things I love about a good contemporary romance: witty banter, smart humour, unique plot, strong women, and sexiness that doesn't make me cringe. And best of all... there was no miscommunication. Kate was so refreshingly HONEST. The author had her say everything she was thinking and yet still managed to create tension and fun. I've actually been taking a huge break from reading romance novels this year because they all seem to be the same, but this gave me hope. Hope that there are some fresh ideas out there in my future. Don't even get me started on all of the sexy men in this book. I couldn't keep up and I am NOT complaining.
So I loved this book. Go figure considering it was a really random addition to my shelf.
I liked the fact the characters were in their thirties and the way they lived was pretty authentic; texting, working, drinking, talking about boys (but not to death like nothing else in the world mattered). Also the fact that there is no such thing as marriage, only contracts. (They last for 7 years, whereby you can re-up or call it quits. If you breach you pay) It was a nice little subtle twist to the world.
Yes it was incredibly unrealistic because every character is drop dead gorgeous, and they were all attracted to protagonist Kate Shaw like bears to honey - but all of its little flaws were easily overlooked by the likeable characters you were automatically invested in, the well written dialogue and occasionally laugh out loud wit.
What really caught me off guard was the way this book ended.... In a cliffhanger, an honest to God cliffhanger with its very own 'To Be Continued' sign. And you know what even though I was mad at it.... I'm not mad it.
I really don't what to write about this book. It wasn't bright but on the other hand I liked it, almost!
This a world that marriage doesn't exist anymore. People sign 7 years contacts with each other and if both agree they renew their contracts, otherwise it's the end whether you like it or not. Kate's contract with Jonathan is coming to its end but they have a perfect relationship and she is sure it's being renewed automatically, she is now focused on finding a job at a law firm as a newly graduate but when Jonathan talks about getting a break from contracts all her world comes down. She will be single again, without a promising job...
The writer is a practicing attorney so it's not surprising that her main character is practicing law too.Honestly I like all non romantic scenes and considering this a romance book, it should say something about it (or probably me).The book is not shown as a series but it ends with To Be Continued...and the story hanging somewhere.
One of my issues with the book was that Kate was kinda invisible to everyone but over a night she becomes super visible to every single man out there. It's so obviously impossible and lame that hurts to read...
I think I'll give the second book a chance though, maybe just to find out how many more men come to her life!!
In this book, the first in the Contract Killers series, the world is the same as today, but with one big difference; there is no such thing as marriage, instead people “sign” with someone. This is basically the same as marriage only it has an end date; 7 years. After the 7 years is up you can either part ways or reup the contract for another 7 years.
Kate is at the end of her 7 years with Jonathan, the love of her life, and assumes they are going to reup…until he tells her otherwise. Now she is a broken hearted newly qualified and unemployed attorney in her 30s living with her parents. And just to make her life more complicated she may be falling in love with a contract killer, a person who only “gets involved” with people who are signed. I know titles are supposed to be short and snappy…but I find I am attracted to the long and snappy ones, historical romance seems to do this especially well. I can’t wait for someone to finally bring out: The Day the Duke Tripped Over the Fence & I Fell in Love, I’ll be all over that! Which, is why I had the burning urge to pick up this book, with the rather cumbersome, yet eye catching title of: I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions.
So, my thoughts on this…the big one is: I thought this had a HEA! I figured each book was going to be a different character in the series finding their one true love and all the drama that that encapsulates. Instead it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with me screaming “Noooooooooo!” to the ceiling. Does Kate figure which of the platoon of guys chasing the lucky biatch she’s going to settle on and they fall madly in love? No. That doesn’t happen. At least not yet.
The amount I enjoyed this book did surprise me, one because of the above and two because there is some kind of weird love triangle/square thing going on. Which is something I normally avoid at all costs, it ends up bugging the life out of me. It still might with this series, but at the moment I’m okay with it and I can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens next.
I liked this book because of another triangle it had; My Golden Triangle (yes it deserves capitals), and everything contained within that triangle I am bound to at least like. My Golden Triangle: humour-that-actually-makes-me-laugh; sexy-alpha-male-I-don’t-want-to-kill; heroine-I-can-stand, it also upgraded a little to The Golden Square (yes more capitals!) and had an interesting idea.
The reason I didn’t give it more than 3.5 stars is because although I could stand the heroine, I did find her a little irritating at times, but I believe that stems from it being told in first person, the pressure to make every sentence witty must be intense and yet I often find, with UF being the exception, that this leads the book to seem like it’s trying too hard. Also, love triangles, I am naturally an impatient person and so I spend most my time during love triangles irritated that people won’t just make up their bloody mind and get on with it. And those feelings started to come out by the end of the book.
Will I continue to read this series? Hell. Yes. I need to know what happens next, I’m pretty sure my “Nooooo!” is still echoing off my ceiling.
I don't want to say to say this book was a disappointment but.. well.
It is likely I may be dropping spoilers the way a stripper drops her panties. Which is to say : casually. You've been warned.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE YOU SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING TERMS AND CONDITIONS is not only a great premise, with a great title, and with some really entertaining and funny moments but.. it was just too much. And not enough. But I'm going to break it down into my major issues to try and keep this short.
First of all. There were just too many men circling Kate after the termination of her seven year contract (which is what exists instead of marriage in this world). Each served a purpose but.. (seeing a trend with these buts?) no. And maybe I was extra annoyed because each of the men were stupid in one way or another.
There was Jonathan, who had ended the contract with Kate, and then later decided he'd changed his mind when he can't be single and yet still have her around, made worse by the sudden appearance of other men in her life, so must now woo her back despite breaking Kate's trust. The fact that she is still so in love with him makes all these interactions really painful because anyone else can see just what a total douchebag he is for trying to have his cake and eat it too and yet Kate struggles to resist his desperate and bumbling overtures in the first 75%.
I'm such a dick. I saw all of this going such a different way. What way? I don't know.. you and me taking a break for a year or so.. then signing another contract and having kids. I somehow didn't envision my life without you. You're right. You're a dick.
There was Adam, a devastatingly handsome contract killer, who had been attracted to her when she'd been taken and then was suddenly only friends the moment she became single, despite his possessiveness and inability to stay away from her and the mixed signals sent due to cuddling, kisses and aforementioned possessiveness.
"I'd rather not have my coworkers think I'm a tramp that slept with you to get a job." "But now you already have the job, so obviously when you sleep with me it won't be for that."
And then there was Dave, a similar contract killer-style predator, initially thought to be like Adam but instead was just open to anyone. A massive player who relentlessly pursues Kate and who neither the reader, nor she, knows if he's being sincere or manipulative in his affections as he's admitted to initially wanting her only for the challenge.
"That sounded like you asking me out." "Funny. That's sort of the way it was intended." "You're a contract killer. I'm single." "I'm willing to overlook your flaws."
And then there was the ending. Maybe I'm mostly annoyed about that. I mean, when you have forty pages left in a book and nothing is resolved you know something has to give, and yet the fact that this was not a standalone completely blindsided me.
Adam is definitely my favourite of the three suitors but after that ending even he's on thin ice with me. Which I know is just what Lyon is doing to make the eventual turn around worth it (if Adam is even end game which, I mean, come on he has to be) but still. Arg.
I'm going to read on (because of course) however the only thing I was truly happy about during the course of this read were the lawyer-y scenes and related shenanigans (seriously funny) and the female friendships. Kate might be a little all over the place for me, yet none of the love interests seem to truly deserve her at this point, but Logek (I know, there's a whole story about it) was amazing and Mags was a late-addition to the female friend posse and was just adorable.
"Dearly beloved, we are here to bid a sad farewell to Kate's youth." "Excuse me?" "Sorry. Got this mixed up with your birthday speech."
The beginning was strong enough to weather the results of the not-so-wrapped-up wrap up so while I'm definitely tempering my expectations for the sequel I'm still hoping for better in the book (books?) to come.
3 "as if a Kardashian ever could have lasted under contract for the full seven years" stars
Did I read that this was a debut? I'm impressed! I couldn't put it down and now I'm anxious to see how Kate's predicament plays itself out. The characters were all very well developed with distinguishable personality traits (and flaws) that endeared them all to me.....well, maybe not Tony. I can't wait to jump into book 2.
**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: https://bookbriefs.net**I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions is the first book in the adult romantic comedy series called Contract Killers by Erin Lyon. I loved this book. As soon as I read the title, I knew I was going to love this book. (The title still cracks me up.) I love you, Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions (hereinafter "I Love You") (see, I can be lawyer funny too...) is set in a world where the concept of marriage has turned into a series of seven year contracts. At the end of your contract term, you and your partner can choose whether or not to re-sign for another term of years. How romantic, right? This book is marketed as, "27 Dresses meets Bridget Jones’s Diary for the millennial set", which I think is spot on. I really really enjoyed every moment of this book. In fact, when I got to the last page, I kept trying to turn for more. I need more!
I'm really hoping that the contract killers series is going to be several books long, focusing on lots of different "contract killers" or men that only go after women that have signed a contract with another man. But I know it will be at least two books long because our main character's story is not finished yet. I am dying to find out what is going to happen with Kate. I really like her. When we first meet her, she is pretty happy with the way her life has turned out. Until her jerk of a partner decides that he is not going to re-up their contract. Kate's journey is just so darn relate able. Whether it is on the newly single level, or on the trying to find a job/career level, something about Kate and this book will have you nodding along. I loved getting to know Kate. We would be great friends!
I completely adored Adam. I didn't think I was going to love him right away, but he totally won me over. I am so excited that we get to see another book and I am hoping for tons of Adam in it. This book left off at a killer cliffhanger, and I am itching to get my hands on the second book in the series. I think I love you is the perfect novel for fans of witty romances with tons of humor and lots of heart. This book needs to be made into a movie. The whole time I was reading I Love You, I was seeing it unfold on the big screen in my mind. I can't wait to read more from Erin Lyon because she totally sold me on this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's been a long time since I've read a story and have been able to immerse myself in a romantic comedy so completely. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy them immensely! But, I usually find, even the most enjoyable ones, just enough removed from reality that I can't relate to the characters as much as I'd like to.
So, I Love You is a refreshing story about Kate, a woman--who just so happens to be my age--who finds herself in a transition period of life. And, while I am in no way able to relate to the romantic side of her life, I can still understand her conflictions as they come up.
Career-wise, Kate is finding out that sometimes we have to make compromises. Add that with the fact that her personal life takes a turn that she never saw coming...I can't help but feel for poor Kate.
Except that, I mean, the men that enter Kate's life at this point...I just can't help but think how lucky she is!
There is a bit of a "triangle". Okay, it's a bit more of a square, I guess. And, while I definitely do have my favorite, I can't help but get caught up in the confusion right along with Kate as each of her men continually confuse her.
Kate also has a fabulous friend in Logek. These two are my friendship goals, seriously. You can tell that even though they have their own lives going, for better or worse, these two will always have each other's backs.
This book has moments that are smart, funny, and awkward--much like Kate, herself. And I can really appreciate that Kate is a strong, independent woman who just needs a little emotional support every once in awhile and isn't afraid to admit it. Kate has her limitations but I don's see them so much as weaknesses but as ways for her character to become more self-aware. It's okay to need people every once in awhile. And it's possible to "need" a man's comfort without depending on him completely.
The writing is splendid and the characters are engaging!
The only thing that frustrated me about this book was that there wasn't more of it! It definitely ends on a cliffhanger. But, that's a given since it's just first in a series. I'm really anxious for the rest!
I mean, it's kind of pitiful how much I can't stop thinking about Kate and what's going to happen to her!
So, Ms. Lyon--you have a reader for life!!! And, possibly, a new social-media stalker. ;)
Kate's life is royally screwed up--in the most entertaining way possible--but she powers through it all with the aid of good friend Logek, copious amounts of alcohol, and "contract killer" or two to help her through the breakup of her long-term relationship. Misery never hurt so good!
I'm going to call this book a happy accident because that's what reading I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions (boy that's a mouthful) was. I didn't mean to read it but after the sneak peek I took, I couldn't stop. I should've known better but no regrets cause I fully enjoyed what I read.
Kate is a funny enough main character. She hasn't had the best of luck with her professional life but when her perfect personal life does a 180, her whole world basically gets upended. Kate is pretty much a hot mess all throughout the book but I loved her hilarious commentaries. She's a bit self-deprecating but she's not ashamed of flaunting herself to have a good time. It's nice to see her acknowledging her hormones and admit how she has no control once they come out to play ;) Though I wouldn't call having three hot guys interested in you the worst thing, her tangled up emotions warrant her needing some space and time to figure her feelings out.
I'm a fan of witty banter and flirty conversations and I Love You Subject to the Following Terms and Conditions has both! Kate is able to have suggestive yet funny interactions with all three of her love interests. They're not exactly a love quartet but things are definitely complicated. She's got a big decision ahead of her seeing as she has a long sweet history with her ex Jonathon while the potential suitor, Dave, brings out her playful side. Not to be predictable but of the three guys I'm obviously rooting for Adam, the smoking hot contract killer who just wants to be friends with Kate (yeah right). His particular taste and Kate's recent single status actually makes her an unfit candidate for him but that doesn't stop him from feeling something for her. I love their chemistry! It burns! I really want to see them rip each other's clothes off! Ahem, I mean pour their heart and soul out to each other.
For me the excitement in the novel is in seeing Kate's choice. I'd really love to see her make a rational decision since everyone around her seems to be acting rather irrationally. This includes her best friend Logik. She's always been the comfort Kate seeks and it's so sweet to see them rely on each other. Now that Logik is in a bit of a situation herself, I'm curious to see how she will handle herself and what sort of sound advices Kate will be doling out to her.
The killer cliffhanger leaves us no closer to a conclusion ahhhh! I read on Goodreads that the author outlined the story to three novels so I suppose it makes sense to end where she did. More fun and sexy times with these characters (particularly Kate and Adam please and thank you very much), right? When do we get the next book because I need it!
The thing that might appeal to people is that there is no marriage only 7 years contracts, no eternal commitment...because it's different, but technically it's not that different. You don't get a divorce, when you screw up your contract you basically a fine to pay...
I don't know what to say..this book was a mess and didn't catch me. I really didn't connect with this one. Being chased by 3 dudes?! Come on...all kind of douchebags... The hot scenes are not that hot. The drama scenes should have more emotion, she should have shouted to Jonathan "You fucking broke my heart you asshole stop trying to get in my panties!" but no. No typical heartbreak, lacking appetite or crying for days. Why should she is she has more 2 guys trying to get in her panties... -.- --' I just couldn't wrap my head around all this easiness and denial...
It was really confusing when they were texting and thinking at the same time. There was no change, nothing to differentiate it. Sometimes I was sure if she was thinking or if she really texted. Sometimes I got confused between the texts, like who was saying what.
It had some pop culture mentions.
But at the end, it felt disappointing and nothing new. I really didn't get what all the fuzz it's about this book. it just felt half-hearted and too much drama... I'm just reading the next one because I'm team Adam, I like that he seems a classic tormented hero, with a dark facete. I do hope there's closure in the next book, no more stupid cliffhanger.

4.5 Stars This was a very enjoyable and entertaining read. While I could not relate at all to the female lead (Kate), it says something about the writing that I was intrigued and invested to see what happens. The writing was witty and so engaging that it makes this book a fast read. I really enjoyed all the side characters too. From her parents, to the three potential love interests, to her friends; all were memorable. The one major flaw is that it's a two part series and book one ends with no completion. It's not quite a cliffhanger but it leaves you unfulfilled. I'm invested enough that I have book two lined up and ready to go. On its own merits, I would highly recommend this book. As a series, we'll have to wait and see.
First off, I had no idea this would end in a cliffhanger!
The whole premise of this book is that relationships are based on "contracts" rather than marriages, yet this is never actually explained at any point in this book.
There's a love quadrangle, for lack of a better term. It's ridiculous. I don't want my heroine dating three men at the same time unless they're all sleeping together TBQH! And it's not that I think it's wrong for a single woman to date multiple men--even if one of them is her ex--but every guy who meets Kate seems to fall in love with her. Give me a break.
And what is with the slut-shaming? Argghhh. This was a waste of my time.
Well, the goodreads date read tracker is being dumb because I've only read this once and it won't let me fix it...
BUT HOLY COW AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CLIFFHANGER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT TO KNOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ugh, that ending! Thank goodness I went with my gut and avoided this book for a year until the second one was available... making people wait that long has to be some sort of cruel & unusual punishment!
I really loved this one! It definitely reminded me of Can I See You Again by Allison Morgan. I really liked the concept of this alternate reality. It was fun, emotional & gave me the butterflies!
To be continued... ?!?!?! What!! Very light and fun. Glad there will be another book because I'm enjoying the story, but I'm unhappy I have to wait for it now.
Erin -- I see you read our reviews. WRITE FAST! All of that law stuff taking up your time, that can wait. :)
Once I opened this book, I couldn't put it down.... read the entire thing in one day. Wonderfully written and leaves the reader waiting for the next book.
