Intergalactica is the first book in Brazilian author F.P. Trotta's ambitious space opera series, originally published in Portuguese in 2016. At over 300 pages, it wastes no time launching readers into an epic sci-fi adventure across the cosmos. While the story introduces complex themes and ideas, it remains an entertaining page-turner from start to finish.

The novel kicks off with striking imagery, setting the scene of a fierce thunderstorm raging over Chicago on the eve of a momentous event. The next day, NASA is poised to launch its pioneering manned mission to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, in search of signs of extraterrestrial life. This opening establishes a fascinating backdrop of near-future space travel while also creating a sense of foreboding with the dark storm clouds.

It is within this atmosphere that readers first meet Amanda Collins, a neuropsychiatrist who awakens from a devastating months-long coma in a Chicago hospital. Her recovery seems nothing short of a miracle to doctors, given how advanced her case of meningitis was. When Amanda shares an otherworldly near-death experience with her friends Ripley and Stryker, their intrigue is piqued. Amanda describes traveling through darkness into a lush, Earth-like realm, coming across friendly humanoids and fantastical architecture. Most striking of all was her encounter with a glowing entity who communicated deep, cosmic truths to Amanda without words. Though Amanda is a woman of science, the experience's vivid clarity leaves her uncertain how to reconcile it.

This early scene is particularly effective in drawing readers straight into the heart of the story's mysteries. Trotta poses fascinating questions about the nature of consciousness and reality that stay with the reader throughout. Amanda's tale also sets up her pivotal role in the events to come, hinting at larger cosmic forces at work. From here, the plot accelerates at breakneck pace as Amanda and her friends find themselves targeted and thrust into danger. A confrontation reveals Amanda's estranged father Oswald to be the sinister force behind it all. In revealing flashbacks, it's shown Oswald abandoned Amanda and her mother years ago after a business deal soured.

Now the enigmatic leader of an underground geopolitical corporation called The Firm, Oswald plans to hijack the Europa mission for his own sinister ends. Using advanced teleportation technology, he intends to transport the spacecraft and all its crew seventeen light years away to an Earth-like planet, leaving Earth vulnerable to destruction. With the stakes immediately sky-high, Amanda realizes she must piece together her past to understand Oswald's motives and stop his plans. Along with Ripley, Stryker and new acquaintance Lina, Amanda begins infiltrating The Firm from within using her medical knowledge and combat training. Amanda's group race to decrypt teleportation tech, decode Oswald's endgame, and survive repeated attacks from his forces. Deception, combat, engineering challenges and tight escapes become the norm. Twists like reversible aging drugs that can make one young or old add further intrigue.

What follows is a thrilling rollercoaster ride across settings both grounded and visionary. Trotta vividly brings to life scenes like Amanda's secret headquarters "The Lair," the high-tech facilities of The Firm, and the varied landscapes of planets like Saturn's moon Titan. He also crafts imaginative alien cultures and advanced space vessels that feel grounded in scientific possibility. Furthermore, Trotta imbues even minor characters and background extras with a sense of purpose and humanity. Whether friendly or antagonistic, nearly everyone Amanda and her crew encounter seems to have rich inner lives and agendas driving their actions. This lends an impressive level of world-building to what could have been disposable presences.

Throughout, F P Trotta keeps up a steady stream of revelations that peel back more layers of the overarching conspiracy. So the stage widens from a family feud to an intergalactic battle between visions of humanity's destiny. Amanda must not only outmaneuver her father, but also determine whether more benevolent cosmic forces truly guide her path as her near-death experience suggested. She comes to understand herself as a key that could unlock mysteries about Earth's place in the universe. Along the way, Amanda forms bonds with several alien comrades who sacrifice much to aid the cause. Their presence underscores Trotta's positive depiction of humanity's place among the stars, making diversity and cooperation humanity's greatest assets.

While the prose can feel a tad workmanlike in areas as a result of translation, Trotta more than makes up for it with sheer imaginative gusto. Every chapter serves up innovations, near-misses and reveals that continue thickening the plot. The relentless pace allows little room for rest or reflection, keeping readers fully engaged page after page. I won't spoil the multiple twists, but suffice to say Trotta pulls the rug out from under expectations in the most satisfying of ways. It's a testament to how effectively he's constructed layered intrigues and feints within feints to get to this point. Readers will be on the edge of their seats right until the end.

Intergalactica undeniably succeeds as a starry-eyed adventure. F.P. Trotta polishes up familiar space opera tropes with positive messages of our connectedness across space and time. He leaves no doubt about humanity's rightful place stepping boldly into the cosmos. For those seeking an imaginative, heartfelt journey beyond the stars, Intergalactica and its yet untranslated sequels offer unlimited potential. Trotta has spun a epic yarn that inspires the same sense of childlike wonder about alien life that first drove our earliest dreamers to reach for the skies. And that is an achievement to last among the eternal.

I just finished reading Intergalactica by F.P. Trotta and I have to say, it really blew me away. The book pulls you right into this epic space adventure from the very first page. It sets up an intriguing mystery with the main character, Amanda, waking up from a coma with memories of another world.

From there, the story takes off as Amanda and her friends get caught up in uncovering her dad's sinister plot. He's the head of this shady organization called The Firm and he wants to hijack a NASA mission to find alien life. His plan is totally nuts and of course Amanda has to stop him.

While the overall plot is exciting, I was really impressed with all the rich details Trotta includes. He crafts these vivid settings both on Earth and other planets that really bring the story to life. You can tell he put a lot of thought into world building. The characters are also multi-dimensional - even the villains have complex motivations.

Through it all, Amanda's journey of self-discovery kept me engaged. The themes of exploration and questioning what's real really resonated with me. By the end, my mind was totally blown by all the crazy twists. I didn't want the ride to end!

If you're into epic sci-fi adventures with clever plots and imaginative world building, I can't recommend Intergalactica enough. Trotta's storytelling mastery had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It left me with a lot to think about even after finishing. This one is definitely going down as one of my all-time favorite space operas.

oh my, what a thrilling piece of work!

I enjoyed Intergalactica! This novel was filled with such fantastical and thrilling adventure. Of course it is fictional, but the scientific parts of the book were astounding. The realist in me could pick out the language and actions used in the AI world today. I recommend this read, it was awesome.

A captivating sci-fi tale about a woman’s struggle for survival.

••INSIGHT: Amanda who was in a coma gets up and sees 2 of her patients. Then Amanda goes out along with her friends. She gets attacked by a group of police officers. Why did they attack her? How did she deal with the evil intentions of a corporation called “The Firm”? Did anyone support her? How is the manned mission to Jupiter’s moon linked to all this?

••REVIEW: The book begins with a bang, the readers will be intrigued by the first few chapters. The author has managed to create a sense of tension in the story. The way the setting was described was commendable. Through words, the author was able to send us to a different planet. We are introduced to different creatures and cultures. The book also reminds us of mythology stories, where the protagonist goes on a journey for a strong purpose. In addition to that, the story does contain interesting characters like Amanda, Lina, and Mr.Oswald. At times readers may feel the book’s plot is meandering but everything becomes clear by the end of the book.

••STRENGTH: 1. Vivid descriptions of the fictional planet Gliese.
2. Interesting Premise.
3. Formidable antagonist.
4. Readers will be able to connect to Lina’s character more.
5. Brilliant climax.
6. Good Language and Vocabulary.
7. Catchy book cover.

••WEAKNESS: The plot seems too convoluted for the readers before they reach the last few chapters.

••TARGET READERS: This book is ideal for people between the age group of 20-40 and for sci-fi lovers.

••GENRE: Science-Fiction

Sweeping plot with multiple successive storylines in one big book.

Intergalactica is a science fiction novel by Brazilian author F.P. Trotta, recently translated into English, and is the first book in a series. The lengthy story covers a lot of ground, from Earth to the far reaches of space and back, as Dr. Amanda Collins and her companions match wits with an evil genius, her own father!

Amanda Collins is a neurosurgeon and therapist who awakens from a coma after contracting meningitis. Her two best friends, who are also her therapy patients, Ripley and Stryker, are at her bedside. Amanda is released from the hospital, and the trio is joined by a new acquaintance, Lina, at a coffee shop, where uniformed officers confront the group to arrest Amanda for treason. A shoot-out ensues, officers are killed, and the heroes escape to Amanda's secret Chicago hideaway, appropriately named "The Lair." Here, Amanda's backstory is revealed, including her heartbreak that the officers are actually minions of her estranged father, renowned scientist Oswald Rose Collins. Amanda is certain that her father plans to use an upcoming space launch to Europa to acquire the means to destroy Earth after he and his trusted followers escape to a distant Earth-like planet. After preparing her friends to help foil her father's plan, the story is off and running at speed, and things never slow down.

Besides Amanda, a core group of characters are joined in their adventures by representatives of the alien cultures they encounter. While the story's focus is definitely on the action, I found the characters lacked dimension, and they did a lot of screaming and shouting of dialogue. I did not connect much with any of them.

The plot is imaginative, and the action is non-stop, with an evil genius that just won't die. However, a massive twist in the story turns the entire story on its head. Unfortunately, a rough translation and poor punctuation made this book a tough reading experience, requiring frequent pauses to determine what the author was trying to say. Still, the story comes through as a great adventure.

The descriptions of the wide range of settings the characters encounter are vivid and creative, running the gamut of familiar scenes of tropical beaches and deserts to strange alien landscapes to Chicago and rural Iceland. Spacecrafts tended toward fantastical interiors without lingering on technical details.

INTERGALACTICA is for sci-fi/fantasy readers who enjoy big books with sweeping plots and multiple successive storylines and have the patience to tease the tale from the translation.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy through RABT Book Tours and PR.

Intergalactica is an intriguing science fiction narrative that taps into a growing theme in contemporary literature: humanity’s destruction of Earth and the urgent quest for a new world to colonize. This notion is grounded in a sense of urgency, reflecting a growing consensus that the need to find a new home may indeed become a real challenge.

Central to the plot is the conflict between The Firm and NASA, with the latter planning a mission to Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. The Firm, however, has designs on hijacking the spacecraft for its own enigmatic purposes. Amanda’s quest to unravel the shadowy intentions of The Firm leads her to engage with its leadership, pretending to align with its goals and vision for humanity’s future.

The novel is not merely an exploration of space and the inevitable prospect of abandoning Earth as its resources dwindle. The more engaging narrative thread is the unveiling of Amanda’s multifaceted character. Her talents for infiltration are akin to the espionage techniques found in John le Carre’s novels, facilitated by her neuropsychiatrist background. Trotta’s deft ability to pen scenes from her perspective adds to the authenticity and allure of the story.

The storyline of Intergalactica transcends space travel and cosmic ambitions. Through his storytelling, Trotta subtly communicates that space itself remains indifferent to our desires and struggles. Instead, it’s our interaction, our shared goals, and our connection to each other that infuse life with meaning—even as the specter of time looms over our collective existence. In a world teetering on the brink, Trotta’s novel serves as both a thrilling adventure and a thoughtful reflection on what truly matters.

A brilliant gem in the sci-fi genre...

"Intergalactica" by F. P. Trotta is a thrilling addition to the world of science fiction and the first book from this Brazilian space opera series now available in English. The story revolves around NASA's manned expedition to explore Jupiter's moon, Europa. Neuropsychiatrist Amanda awakened from a coma, becomes a key player against an underground entity called The Firm, which plans to hijack the spacecraft and head for a distant habitable planet.

Trotta's narrative takes us on an epic journey from Earth to space and back. Dr. Amanda Collins, with friends Ripley and Stryker, forms an unlikely team to thwart an evil genius—shockingly, her own father. The story unfolds at breakneck speed, although character depth could be improved. Trotta's vivid descriptions, blending philosophical themes with action, make it a must-read for intellectually stimulating science fiction fans.

Despite translation issues, "Intergalactica" remains a gripping space odyssey. Captain Aria Nova leads a diverse crew on a cosmic exploration with eloquent prose and intricate world-building. The novel excels at weaving philosophy into its plot, offering a thought-provoking reading experience with unexpected twists. It's a brilliant gem in the sci-fi genre, combining mind-stirring ideas with heart-pounding action for fans of intellectually rich adventures. Recommended.

a great science fiction book!

Although I don't typically gravitate towards space-themed genres, "Intergalactica" by F.P. Trotta managed to captivate my interest in a way I didn't anticipate. What truly stood out for me was the author's exceptional writing style, which transcended genre preferences and drew me into the narrative.

This science fiction novel, centered around a daring mission to Europa with the looming threat of hijacking and an unexpected twist in the plot, boasts a unique storyline. It's a testament to the author's creativity and storytelling prowess. As I delved deeper into the book, I found myself constantly craving more, eager to uncover the fates of the characters and the evolving storyline.

What makes "Intergalactica" truly outstanding is its ability to seamlessly blend action and suspense throughout the narrative. The characters were not just well-crafted but also immensely relatable, making their journey all the more engaging. I liked the book that started out with Amanda as the main character. She is an interestingly written character. First she is in a coma in a hospital and we as the readers hear about her past and her family. The doctors were not expecting her to wake up with her disease so advanced as it was.
I love this genre, it is a space opera and I admit I wasn’t familiar with the genre but I found that I loved this book! The firm is kind of like the overseer of a project happening with Jupiter and NASA. Amanda’s father wants to hijack a project that The Firm is working on for his own means.
However what is the truth of the why, this you find out what the truth is as a reader in this book. This is a fast moving, well written sci-fi book for those who enjoy the sci-fi genre!

Trotta manages to create an epic narrative scope without the need for a bloated page count. I don’t mind a lengthy novel, but I do appreciate an author who’s able to do so much with so little. It means readers who have less free time don’t have to miss out on these kinds of stories!

This was exactly the kind of seamless sci-fi/fantasy blend that I’m looking for. It’s often tricky to market these stories and so I’m always grateful to see an author willing to write them anyway.

A compelling mix of flawed characters forced into complex socio-political situations. I could never be certain what choices they’d make or where they’d end up.
Great world building, amazing prose, and enticing complex characters that grow a lot.

Maybe I'm just not the intended audience for this book, but I truly do not understand all the 5-star reviews this book has received. I'm literally only giving it a 2-star rating over 1 star because it was at least entertaining while being one of the most awful books I've ever read. I understand this book was translated to English from the author's original language, but it's still hard to justify this book even factoring that in.

The plot and pacing is all over the place. Full adventures happen in the span of one chapter while still not helping to make the rest of the book feel cohesive. There are immediately four main characters within the first few chapters of the book who for some reason need to be listed in order at all times in every scene they're ever in. Amanda, seemingly the MAIN character spends about 50% of the book taking a backseat to Lina, who has zero personality and just kind of goes along with whatever. New characters will be introduced one chapter just to be killed off in another chapter or two. Typos and plot inconsistencies abound throughout this book. Things that were just revealed one chapter are immediately forgotten or ignored in the next. It's an entire mess.

The writing style is also just... repetitive and uncomfortable. I lost count how many times I read "X smiled at Y, and they smiled back." It happened on just about every other page. Same with the phrase "X screamed" following a quotation of dialogue. A large majority of the dialoague in this book was phrased as being "screamed". Very often in situations that in no way called for it.

And then there's the ending. All the time you invest in the later portion of the book is wasted with an "it was all a simulation" type of reveal that makes absolutely zero sense and serves to set the reader up with a cliffhanger for the start of a series. It's all bafflingly bad. I powered through this book because I was honestly just finding myself amused with the entire mess I was reading. I would not recommend this book at all unless you're looking for a fun-bad sci-fi story that lasts way longer than it should.

Very interesting blend of fantasy tropes with a sci-fi element. The worldbuilding and plot was completely captivating.
This universe is so detailed and fantastic, yet authentically presented. I was increasingly gripped by the unique story and dynamic interplay of the expertly drawn cast. It draws you in and makes you feel like you are apart of a different world.
Wonderful read.

What an interesting story line to fall into. It was something new that I haven’t read before, I love that.
It was an exciting ,enjoyable, filled with drama and an overall interesting read.
Fairly written, could be a little more depth in the story. But I really enjoyed the characters and the writing.

A Goodreads member sent me an unsolicited email to introduce me to this SF novel by F P Trotta. As the email mentioned that the themes in this novel was similar to Carl Sagan's Contact, I decided to give it a read.

I would say that the story is more "adventury", like the juvenile novels of Robert A Heinlein such as "Starman Jones" or "Have Space Suit Will Travel". Trotta's novel lack the philosophical sophistication of Sagan's Contact, which is what made Contact so enjoyable for me. Intergalactic is very action oriented, and can probably be easily adapted for TV or film. The fact that the novel ends with a hook for a sequel (series) made the TV/film association even stronger.

While reading the book, I just could not help feeling how convenient the super-sentient characters are in that they can speak English, have space transport that can travel at the speed of light, have civilisations that are orders of magnitude ahead of human ones, and yet behave so much like humans. The beings from Nitro and Pleiades are so advanced that they could practically be masters of the universe. Yet they harbour internal squabbles that are practically childish. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case for most SF stories. The only SF story that I have read with an unusual super-alien is the one in Isaac Asimov's "The Gods Themselves".

Personally, I feel that is an oversaturation of epic galactic stories recently (especially in the movies). But "epic-ness" does not necessarily mean good. Sometimes, a simpler story would have been better. In fact, I thought that Intergalactic would have come across better if there were no introductions of the deus-ex-machina aliens, and the story is strictly about a mad human scientist Oswald and his desire to become God. Unfortunately, that was not to be.
