Amidst the chaos of my life, I’ve realized that not all wars can be won.

I see it now.

My stubbornness was peeled away, allowing me to see through my unrealistic desire to take down a powerful criminal empire.

I see it…and it’s too late.

I never could turn my back on family—even when I know I should.

It would have been okay. It should have been okay…but it wasn’t, and now the stain of betrayal is too prominent to ignore.

I blame my brother…

I blame my friend…

…I blame myself.

Dark & twisted!! 😍

During the entire book I was like:

-“Oh no, don’t you dare do that to my girl!”
- “You sick fuck- you are gonna die”!
-“Emily. You are so badass, show him you are tough”!
-“Why are you not dead yet!!?”
-“Don’t think you won’t lose”!
-“Jai, you are so dreamy !”
-“ What you do that for!!
- “ Here, have a beer”.
-“ SPIT IT OUT!!
-“Don’t touch her, you creep!!
-“ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”

Safe to say I am really impressed. For such a short book, shit happens. It’s a page turner for sure. At least for me. Well.. I have also been totally hooked from the beginning, so I NEED to know how this ends!

Emily is being held captive by Skull. The motherfucking crime lord.
Let’s just say he is a dick.
Jai- sweet, cold, brooding Jai- trying to get his woman (Emily) back from that monster.
It was INTENSE. It was GRITTING. It was DARK.

Will I recommend: Yes, this series is so compelling, and Jai is hot 😂

Well this was a definite game twister that I was not expecting. I saw Jai pretty much in a bigger rock in a hard place, faucets of Skull I would have never thought possible, and Emily continuing to grow and evolve more radically.

I would have never thought that author Skyla Madi would have taken the story in this direction, but at the same time, it was mind blowingly intriguing to say the least. While you get to journey a lot with Jai, Emily, and Damien throughout, you also get to see a humane flicker of what once was the man underneath Skull.

Anyway, can't go into more since it would give off spoilers, but, seriously loved this fifth installment! Kept me constantly on my toes!

Ink and Bone by Skyla Madi (New York Crime Kings – Book 5)
Emily has been captured by Damien aka Skull. He is a demon and yet underneath all that there seems to be some form of a human being. He is a twisted character and you will find yourself sitting on the edge of a knife hating him one moment and feeling sorry for him at other times. Don’t get me wrong, he is poor evil. Emily has become his experiment in more ways than one. I admire her for keeping herself strong; her character is growing in strength. However, how much more can she take and how many lives is she going to get before the inevitable happens? Jai has realized that he can’t take Skull and his men on alone. He does the only thing he can; he sells his soul to the MC Chapter to help him. Will they have his back or will then set him up for Skull? When the plan is set in motion and all hell breaks loose can this family survive or will Skull forever be the king of the world? The characters all grow on you and you are left on a cliff hanger.

Well wow ... I'm not really sure what to say to that one!
I love this series, it sucked me in at book one and hasnt let me go yet. I love it all, the plot, the characters, everything it's fab.
Emily just continues to amaze me. She's gone from this shy, frightened, mousey girl  (let's be fair we've all been that girl at some point) to this strong willed, independent woman; from kitten to lion. We come back to her observance in this book which is nice. In the earliest book she almost admired the tattoos skull has, seeing the beauty in the artwork and the time and changes he had to go through to make himself this man and here we see snippets of this and the man underneath.
I think it's fair to say that Skull is deranged, he's a great bay guy! In this book we see more of the man underneath, how an everyday person can go from that to this insanity and really bringing us into his world. We all have to own our own behaviour and make peace with life when it doesn't go our way, if this isn't a reminder that bad things can happen to good people then I'm not sure what is.
I would love to see more of Damien going forward. Skull is cool but I really enjoyed the snippets here.
Well Jai's mission is complete ... he got his brother, except that he needed to save his other half... but in doing that they lost Emily. Poor guy has got life hard atm :(

Once I started Ink & Bone I literally couldn't put it down. Often in a series of books its always the first book that's a favourite. Although Blood & Rust was a fairly eye opening book, I think Ink & Bone may be my favourite in the series so far.

You see, I love Jai and Emily. I do. I even like Joel and Monique. But there's something about Skull that makes me tick. I know he's the bad guy. I know he's not nice and just plain evil. But the more I see of him in these books, the more I actually want to read the chapters he is in. So much so I wish Skyla (Author) would give him his own book. Or maybe there is one? Either way if there isn't, how about it Skyla? Back to this review though. This book had lots of Skull and Emily time with her being in his captivity and it made for a totally consuming read.

Ink & Bone has so much going on I think its the most action packed book so far and going back again, Blood & Rust was pretty blood thirsty! The story moves at such a rapid pace and yet for poor Emily time is dragging so much. Unlike with Rage & Bullets where I didn't feel much happened in the first third of the book, we are thrust (Yes literally!) into this one. I don't want to talk about what happens as I feel it will give spoilers. But what I will say is this, if there was ever any uncertainty to how strongly Jai feels for Emily then this book shows he will do anything for her. I feel he's changed a lot from the first books and at present I'm beginning to wonder where his moral compass has gone. But still, I'm rooting for these two (And Monique and Joel too - I think Monique is a great character!).

Without a doubt my favourite book so far, I can't wait to see where Guts & Glass takes us which I'll be reviewing soon!! 4 stars - Kindle Unlimited.

OMG! How could you leave us hanging like that Ms. Madi! Please, PLEASE tell me that Emily and Jai will get an HEA. These two have been through so much.

As you guessed it, another great book in this series. The love Jai and Emily still hold for each other is just amazing.

And don't get me started on Skull. I almost, almost felt sorry for him. He actually showed a bit of humanity in this book. While I hope he rots in hell, a part of me can't help but feel sorry for him and the grief he has yet come to terms with in losing the love of his life.

I am on the seat of my chair, patiently wait for the final book to come out. *coughs* better be soon Ms Madi. I need more of my (yeah you read that right b*tches, back off Jai is mine) book boyfriend.

This is the fifth book in this series and they must be read in order. This book was a little heart breaking. Jai finally found and rescued his brother. While doing that he found the girl of his dreams. While trying to help his brother rescue the girl of his dreams he loses his. Skull has taken Emily while they were rescuing Joel’s girl. Now when he wants to go back in for Emily Joel doesn’t seem in a hurry. Poor Emily she has been through so much already and now she is at the mercy of Skull and his men. Jai will do everything in his power to rescue Emily. His just worried about what shape she will be in when he does rescue her. Who will he be able to get to help him and can he really trust them? Jai feels like everything that happens to her in there will be his fault because he couldn’t protect her, trusted the wrong people. He wants to be mad and Huss and Joel however in the end he is mad and himself the most. Will he be able to rescue Emily? Who will he have to align himself to do it? This book was crazy. I don’t really like Joel at this point. Emily was the main reason Jai helped rescue Joel’s girl in the first place and now he doesn’t really seem interested in helping him rescue Emily. It is almost as if now that he has what he wants he doesn’t care about anything or anyone else. Skull is twisted and who knows what he will do to Emily to get his hands on Jai and Joel which is who he really wants. I am excited to read the next book in this series. I am loving Skyla and her series.

“When I’m done, his castle will be nothing but a pile of rubble and his empire an old tale used to scare children into staying in school. When I’m done, Skull will know why he never should have fucked with my family in the first place.”

Caged, trapped once again by Skull Emily finds herself at his mercy... he doesn’t have any. Having faith that Jai will come for her she does what she needs to to survive. Jai meanwhile is struggling with his new reality, betrayal and disappointment war with his need to get back his Kitten. He is a soldier in a war that he seems to be unable to win yet he can’t give up, he can’t leave her with him. Who can he trust and is he strong enough to keep going against all the odds.

Book 5 is gripping as we were left reeling at the end of book 4, the pace is relentless and Jai is a powerhouse, determined to do everything he can to end Skull. He’s a dangerous man that has lost his mind and yet he is strangely growing on me in his madness I see glimpses of a man that could have been something else. He’s a beautiful tragedy that is now causing misery triple fold to those around him in his quest for power and control. It ends in a dark place and I can’t wait to dive into the next one!

A four and a half star read.

This is book 5 of the series and again I wasn't disappointed. If you were a bit like me at the start and thought book 5 surely there cant be much more Jai and Emily can go through you will be entirely wrong !

Skull has Emily again, her strength is getting stronger the more she has to deal with but how long can she remain strong after everything that is being thrown at her. Jai is loosing his strength , he has failed Emily again ! How is he going to get her back , he has his brother but that isn't going to be enough, Skull is not going to let Emily out of his site, he is pure evil! Jai needs to turn to the MC for help, he has no choice but it goes against everything he believes in but he needs Emily back. It doesn't sit well with him but was choice does he have, he just needs to hope they have his back. Emily is family now and he will do anything to save her.

These books are full of action and its difficult to try not to give away any spoilers and do the review justice ! All I can say is book 5 and Im so hooked ! The suspense is killing me I need more !

Once Joel has revealed his decision, Jai and Emily face the truth of this never ending and when it does it will only be for the reason that Skull is dead. With this revelation, Jai is torn between helping his brother or walking away with Emily, still running from Skull. All the sacrifices seem as if they were all for nothing. The helplessness will envelope you and make you want to scream. Their future does not have a bright lining. Their world is as gray as any but the strength with knowing how to end the twisted and violent life as they know it, will make you stand up and cheer them on. Joel has nothing but one thing he needs to do and that’s to save the woman he loves and he will do everything in his power, even his own death to save her.

The emotional complications with the story can be more than some can take, especially with all the hate and bloodshed. This excitement will keep you up but also give you nightmares full of visions of the devil himself.

ARC Review posted on: Girls Behind the Books

*I received an ARC from Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for my honest review*

Every reader has an author who is an instant one-click and Skyla Madi is that author for me.

I love this series, it sucked me in at book one and hasnt let me go yet. I love it all, the plot, the characters, everything it's fab.

The story is gripping and extremely well written. It's gritty and dark, but realistic and emotionally charged. It grabs your attention from the beginning and leaves you wanting more...

The chemistry between the two main characters, Jai and Emily's is sizzling hot. I felt several different emotions throughout Ink & Bone.

I couldn't stop reading this book. Seriously, there is a good chance that the world could have fallen down around me and I wouldn't have put this book down.

This was a jam-packed, edge of your seat thrill ride from start to finish! I couldn't put it down.

What I really enjoy about this series is although the story is full of death, betrayal, drugs, gangs and monsters, the characters are relatable and I feel myself drawn into their world. It helps that Emily was an innocent, stumbling into the dark world she is now ingrained into, sinking the reader into the depths of the underworld along with her.

This is a short novella, read in a few hours. So much was packed into this time, yet the pace was perfect. If you enjoy dark, violent reads, this series is for you. I hope for a HEA, but I am really unsure whether I will get it! And that is another reason I enjoy this series.

I can't wait for Round 6- Guts & Glass and the final instalment Death & Dust, that are due for release over the coming months. This is the 5th book in The New York Crime Kings series. Each book is a continuation of the previous book, so must be read in order.

Well, what can I say?! I still love this series. Even after five books it’s highly suspenseful and gripping. I was very engrossed in this story and I look forward to the next book because I really need to know how they are going to get out of this mess they’ve put themselves in.

The story’s gone a long way from where it first started in the tunnels and the characters developed a great deal since then. I also may have developed some feelings toward Skull. Honestly, I love him. Emily would probably smack me in the face and tell me he’s a vile person but I like his evilness. Power is attractively hot and so is Skull. Needless to say, I fear for his ending.
(Oh God! I think I’ve read too many books about hot villains that got the girl in the end! Because something has to be wrong with me when I feel more attracted to Skull than to Jai in this book. Right?!)
‘And then comes the man of the hour, storming toward me without a care in the world, his handgun lifted and pointed at me. He’s going all in.’

Obviously, Skull played a very prominent part in this book and we got a clearer picture of the world he lives in and the empire he rules. I’m excited to find out more.

Genre: Romantic suspense, dark romance, crime
Standalone: Nope
Part of a Series: Book 5 (of at least 7) in the New York Crime Kings series
POV: Emily and Jai
Steam Level:...Could be a trigger
3/5

In Book 5 of this series Emily is captured and held in Skull's compound while Jai tries to figure out a way to get her back. This installment is quite short. I read it in a few hours, spread out here and there throughout the day. It's the darkest book of the series so far and, of course, leaves you hanging. Once again, the writing is very good and the story moves forward but I wonder just how many books are planned for this series.

I received a copy of this book for free (thankfully, I'd be pissed if I bought it). This is my honest and voluntary review.

I feel like there is no conclusion to this story. It is just going on and on... while the story itself is good. It being dragged out book after book isn't. I feel like I am slowly beginning to loose interest. Which is such a shame. Why do authors seem to be afraid to make one good long book or even if it is a trilogy. Ok but book after book. It doesn't work over the long run. Well not for me anyway.

Oh Jai... what did you do?
I knew it, in the pit of my stomach, that that's gonna happen. I just knew it. You silly Jai.
Now you'd have to find a way to be free again and save everyone as well. Hard task indeed.
Hope the next one is with a happier ending cause all this drama is starting to get annoying. Can't we have a moment of peace and quiet around here? :))

I'm starting to like Skull as a character, his twisted and dark but there's an edge I'm starting to like against the odds. Skyla has such strong character description that it makes it hard not to hate him despite his actions against Emily and Jai. This book was just as captivating as the previous ones, I couldn't put it down. This series is addictive.
