Unlocking the Neck: Understanding the Guitar with the Five-Position CAGED Method

Rate this book
Unlocking the Neck expands on the popular Guitar Wisdom YouTube series "Understanding the Guitar" by giving detailed, sequential instructions for learning to "see" a major key across the entire fretboard. This companion to the free Guitar Wisdom video course on the five position CAGED system offers the most detailed possible instruction for the guitar player that needs to understand their instrument more completely, including links to relevant video video lessons and diagram downloads.

Starting with chords, you'll learn to find the locations of each of the five positions in any key, and then connect these positions to the common scale patterns that all guitar players have been using for centuries.

The scale shapes are then used to derive pentatonic scales and triad arpeggios without creating the unnecessary confusion of learning more shapes and fingerings. The entire neck of the guitar opens up for you, starting simply from the five rudimentary open chord shapes.

Discover what 100,000 viewers have already begun practicing and unlock the neck for yourself.

This book contains important, well-presented information for any guitarist who wants to get beyond the chord-strumming, sing-along phase. Be prepared to work with this book for several months, at least. The info seems well backed up with free online material. Scads of singer/songwriters never learn this stuff and have needed it, but if you wish to improve your chops while gaining an understanding of how music works on the guitar this is a good book.

Not Impressed

I bought the book because of the free download for the chord shapes. Unfortunately when going to his website you get the error 404 not available. Not impressed.

Good rundown.

Good teaching aid. Or learning aid. Well set out. Well organised. Clearly written. Not overly burdened with theory.

Well done.
