What Happens In Scotland #3

The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl

Rate this book
A Lady's Rules of Etiquette When Kidnapping a Gentleman:

1. A lady must obtain a small vial of laudanum and a sturdy length of rope.
2. Once subdued, the gentleman should be bound securely.
3. At no point should the lady leave a sharp implement within the gentleman’s reach.
4. Should rule #3 be neglected, the lady must prepare for things to go dreadfully wrong.
5. In such a case, a lady must keep her countenance and under no circumstances should she submit to his charms and surrender her heart…

Miss Gwendolyn Wilbraham is far more skilled at needlework than she is at kidnapping. But when her best friend begs her to distract the new Earl of Hastings, she reluctantly agrees. Regrettably, the earl is just as clever as he is handsome and before long, he is free of his restraints and not at all pleased…

As one of London’s most notorious rogues, Matthias Hart often finds himself in curious situations. Though he has never woken up drugged, bound, and hidden away in a remote Scottish cottage. Normally, he would welcome such a diversion, but his beautiful captor is young, witty and all-too-innocent. When he finally frees himself, all he wants is revenge and her complete surrender…

Oh my gosh, an honest to goodness bodice-ripper. Like, he literally rips her bodice at one point!

But, it was also super funny. I was chuckling a lot at the beginning of the book especially. Her "kidnapping" was great. Especially when she is going around asking where she can find some rope and sleeping potion.

good plan...

Of course, there had to be some serious stuff, too (don't worry - not too much). But, most of this was just really really fun.

That's pretty damn happy. I think.

Tied to the spot holds you down for love.

The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl was a quick, humorous and sexy read. It starts off with our heroine Gwendolyn Wilbraham in a very compromising situation. As the story unfolds we learn that Gwen had been on a mission to stop her best friend from marrying at Gretna Green. She arrived just in time with her maid Emily and Matthias Hart…who now appears to have his hand gripping her bosom very tightly. Up to this point, her memory is a little sketchy as after they saved the day, they all headed to the taproom and ordered drinks. As the memory’s start to trickle back in, Gwen wakes Matthias hoping he remembers a little more than she does. He doesn’t but he realises the mess he could be in if he doesn’t get his butt out of bed and away from a very compromising situation.

When Gwen ventures out of her room, she goes searching for her best friend Evelyn who has found herself in another situation…involving marrying the blacksmith. With all the madcap frivolity happening Matthias is worried his life may be in jeopardy. See, Matthias is Evelyn’s big brother, Lucas’s best friend and he knows once Lucas finds out that he didn’t stop this craziness he will kill him. The best course of action is to pack Gwen, Evelyn and Evelyn’s maid up and head back to London…but the girls have other plans.

What follows is a plan hatched by Gwen to distract Matthias while Evelyn works through her problems. Her brilliant plan is to drug and tie up Matthias and haul him far, far away. Well, the plan sort of worked until he woke up spitting mad and managed to untie himself.

Turns out that Gwen and Matthias have been avoiding each other for years because they have deeper feelings for each other. Matthias has been distracting himself with actresses and widow's while Gwen keeps to the sidelines and stays out of his way. With them stuck together they can no longer deny that the feelings they have for each other are too strong.

I enjoyed reading The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl but I have to admit that it definitely had a modern feel to it. Matthias could have been a bloke walking down the street today. There was no stuffiness and he didn't come across very gentlemanly. While Gwen has sexual feelings which an innocent maiden generally has no knowledge of. Now, saying that I’m just going by what I have read and experienced in previous historical romances. Maybe we’ve got it all wrong and those innocent little ladies were actually a bunch of hussies in disguise. ;)

If I was to find fault with the storyline, it would probably be that Gwen’s trust issues with Matthias, while well founded, seemed a little OTT to cause a separation of months. Yes, I understood her hesitations, but months away from the man she loves, who sends her notes daily to see how she is, seemed a bit harsh.

The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl was a short and entertaining historical romance with a few laughs, some very steamy scenes and a little angst to keep my attention from start to finish.

There is a bit of a back story to this book and I don't know it. It's not a problem, personally I think the book is stronger because you're just thrown straight into the story without too much explanation. It's very much a regency romp and there is quite a bit of romping.

So, a BBC historical drama this is not, but honestly I find BBC Historical Dramas boring. This on the other hand is a lot of fun.

What an amazing, fun story! I went from giggling hysterically, then feeling annoyed, then oohing and aahing. I was held captive myself by this light hearted, perfect combination of love and humor.

Gwendolyn Wilbraham and her maid, Emily, accompany Matthias Hart to Gretna Green to prevent the marriage of Evelyn and Stephen. Evelyn is Gwen's best friend and the sister of Matthias' friend. After succeeding at their task, they all celebrate. Perhaps a little too much because the next morning everything has turned to chaos. The intended rescue mission has gone completely awry. Gwen finds herself in bed with Matthias, Evelyn is manacled and married to the blacksmith, and the maid and Stephen have fled together. Evelyn is determined to track Stephen down but knows that Matthias won't allow it. So she turns to Gwen for help, asking her to "keep Matthias occupied for a couple of days". What's a girl to do? Drug him, take him to a remote cottage, and tie him up, of course!
Gwen and Matthias have been attracted to each other for years but having suffered through watching the destruction of their own parents' marriages, had vowed to never allow themselves to love. But their close proximity brings their feelings out. And when Matthias escapes his binds, intent on punishing Gwen for her actions, those feelings skyrocket out of control. Oh the punishment!
Telling himself it's only to save Gwen's reputation, he demands they marry in Gretna Green. When they return to London though, Matthias' past philanderings catch up with him. Will it destroy their chance at happiness or can Gwen and Matthias put the past behind them and allow themselves to have the love they thought they'd never find?

This was my first Kate McKinley book but it sure won't be my last. Her characters are unique and ones you fall in love with and need to see united. The repartee between the characters is sharp and delicious and the story line is clever and imaginative. Though this is #2 in the What Happens In Scotland series, it can be read as a stand alone but I guarantee you, like me, will be so delighted with this story that you'll want to read them all. I will definitely be going back and reading Evelyn's story. It's got a highlander, for goodness sakes! And I really want to find out what happens to Gwen's maid Emily. Thank you Kate McKinley for this wonderful introduction to such an enchanting series.

This is my first book by Ms McKinley. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading it and I'm glad to say it was a good read. I'll defenitely keep my eye out for any other Kate McKinley books. This is the third book in a series but you don't have to read the first two to understand this one. Although I recommend you do just so you'll enjoy this one more.

This was a short read that can be read in one sitting. It's a great and light hearted fun book.. I laughed many times (especially in the beginning of the book)! Both the main characters were likable and drew you into the story. And the pacing of the story was just right. Their relationship was sweet and enjoyable to read about. I liked the heroine, Gwen a lot, although I thought that she kind of overreacted when she learned about . There are lustful scenes, but nothing that would skew the book for me.

I approve of books that take me on a ride of roller coaster emotions. You can't figure exactly if you would be annoyed, excited, amused or giddy as the events unfold but you're sure you'd want to read on and see what happens. And The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl was that kind of book. It isn't amazing literature or anything, but it succeeds very well at what it is trying to do. The romance is sweet and the protagonists' struggles, while a bit predictable, aren't too melodramatic or difficult to buy into.

Overall I found this to be a lovely book. It's a very easy read and a pretty satisfying tale. Recommended.

So when I really started reading books(about 10 years ago) it was Historical Romance and only ever Historical Romance. Now I read all Kinds of Romance books. I only really read Historical Romance when it's by an author who I know I love. They are my go to guilty pleasures. I just love them so much and I hate to ruin them with a bad book. That being said let get into this story.....

When I started to read this I felt like I read it before. I just could figure out why then it hit me this is the 3 book about a set of MC's First was the Dukes's book then the Duke's sister (Gwen's BFF) book. Now the Duke's Best Friend and Gwen story.
I love a rake, badboy turned good. IDK it just gets to me(in a good way) This was such a cute story. I love it. I love how much Matthias loved Gwen. He truly just wanted her to love him and to just make her happy and take care of her. They did have a little hiccup but it was smoothed out. I read this book in one sitting. I just adored it. Matthias was so Swoon worthy ;)

This is like the 4th or 5th book by Mrs. McKinley and it definitely won't be my last. I'll go 4 stars.

First, she'd woken up to Matthias offensively groping her person, then she'd found Evelyn married and manacled to a complete stranger, and now Evelyn's fiance (or was he now her former fiance?) had absconded with Gwen's maid. Perfect. Just...perfect. --Gwen

The beginning of this novel was like a Regency Hangover--Evelyn and her fiance Stephen eloped to Scotland forcing Gwen and Matthias (who are both against the marriage) to follow after them in an attempt to stop it. They eventually catch up with the two lovers and prevent the ceremony, and everyone partakes in too much drink while celebrating. The next morning, Gwen and Matthias wake up entwined together, while Evelyn wakes up shackled (literally and figuratively) to the local Scottish blacksmith and her [former] fiance has run off with Gwen's lady's maid. No one can remember exactly what happened the previous night, so when Evelyn asks Gwen to divert Matthias's attention so she can go in search of Stephen, she obliges. And this is how Gwen ends up kidnapping and forcefully restraining Matthias in a secluded cottage in Scotland, while Evelyn and her new beau go in search of her fiance.

I expected this novel to be a fun, somewhat silly but entertaining, and sexy novel simply by the title. And it did not disappoint. The different scenarios our MCs found themselves in was hilarious and SEXY (some kinky bondage action going on), and I loved it. However, when the novel moved into the Second Act (ie. Gwen and Matthias return to London), things got a bit more real and gritty, and I felt we got to connect with them more. As per usual, I do have one hangup: the "breakup"/misunderstanding went on for FAR TOO LONG in my opinion. Three months is a ridiculously long time for Gwen (who was always described as smart, loyal, and levelheaded) to ignore Matthias for his idiocy, especially when The Resolution came about in like 5 pages and was something she should have decided for herself like 10 weeks ago (aka not blindly believe the jealous former mistress or her accusations). Overall, this book was such sexy fun with surprising heart, and I want to go back and read the other novels so I can get the whole picture of what happened that night and thereafter (as all the stories seem to intertwine). LOVED IT.

My Matthias Hart, renowned rake who has always fancied dear Gwendolyn..

Side note: This novel and it's hero/sex scenes read sorta like contemporary author Madison Faye--alpha and semi-jackass but protective and ultimately sweet hero who is pretty domineering yet attentive in the bedroom. Not that this is a bad thing by any means as it worked [for me] in this novel. Enjoy!

The first two pages of this book were at least irreverent fun, although I had no idea what had happened to these characters or why. Never did find out. Then the heroine was tasked with diverting a man so that her friend could chase another man, and a rope and bottle of tranquilizer later this book had devolved into an excruciating, groan-worthy mess. I’m embarrassed to have read/skimmed it.

The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl is the third book in the 'What Happens in Scotland' series by Kate McKinley. It can easily be read as a stand alone book, but it's always nice to read the other books in a series like this first so you can catch up on the characters you have fallen in love with in the previous books.

This is the story of Gwendolyn Wilbraham. Her best friend has asked her to distract the Earl of Hastings in order for her and her fiancé to get to Gretna Green to be married. She ends up convincing the Earl to let her go with him to Scotland in his carriage so she can 'be there' for her friend when, if as planned, the marriage is stopped in time. In reality she plans on kidnapping him, she will do anything to stop him getting to Gretna Green. Amazingly her quickly thought up plan comes to fruition and the Earl finds himself tied up on a bed in a small cottage miles from anywhere.

Matthias Hart, the Earl is absolutely fuming when he wakes up after being drugged, and realises what Gwen has done. It isn't too long though before he turns the tables and ends up having her tied to the bed, and at his mercy. After spending nearly a week in the secluded cottage where they shared some very sexy times, Matthias realises that in order to save Gwen's reputation he has to marry her. He manages to convince her it's the right thing to do although neither of them are happy about it. Yes they are strongly in lust with each other, but they both know lust doesn't last. They both come from homes where there parents were unhappy, and poor Gwen, well her father treats her like rubbish, and has made her feel worthless.

Remember the saying, 'act in haste, repent in leisure' that's what comes to mind for poor Gwen and Matthias. Moreso poor Gwen who knows her husband has been a rake and has had a mistress or two in his days, and she's not sure if he intends to keep one now. As her feelings for him grow, her distress grows too and it's not long before she questions what she has done. How can she stay with a man who won't be faithful to her? Will she stay with him? Will their pasts come between any chance they have of a truly happy marriage together? Can Matt convince Gwen that he can and will be a faithful husband? So many questions to answer, and only one way to find out......read the book.

I love how light-hearted this book was, but that it had some wonderfully emotional, deep scenes too. The passionate scenes were HOT, and the romantic scenes were so sweet a woman could swoon! I love how straight forward Gwen was, being honest with Matthias rather than keeping secrets and festering on things she finds out about him. He does have secrets, but the poor man only tries to keep them from her so as not to worry or upset her. Yes it's the wrong thing to do, but bless him, he's only a man ha!

This story was a wholly enjoyable one. I read the second book in the series prior to this one, and gave it a 4 star rating as I found the ending a little too fast. This book is perfect in every way, and I am more than happy to give it a full 5 star rating.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I like the premise of this series, and the individual stories have the potential to be very cute. However, I think this is a series that you have to read in order. There is quite a bit of character crossover, and I felt like chunks of the story were happening off-page as I was reading. I have a feeling that this storyline runs parallel to So I Married a Highlander.

Gwendolyn Wilbraham is the daughter of a wealthy and cruel merchant, who has made her feel useless and inadequate for her whole life. As a favor to her best friend, Evelyn (heroine from So I Married a Highlander), Gwen drugs and kidnaps Matthias Hart. Matthias is a renowned rake, but he seems to have some history with Gwen. He bounces from widow to ballet dancer, never staying with a single woman long. Gwen is attracted to Matthias, but she is not interested in marriage to a philandering reprobate.

So at the beginning of this story, I was quite confused. I didn't know who most of the people were or why they were in Scotland. I don't know why Matthias had to be kidnapped as it was unclear what his relationship was to Gwen. I rolled with it and the story picked up once Gwen absconded with Matthias unconscious in their carriage. I really enjoyed the middle part of the story - the kidnapping, revenge, and early days when they were back in London. From that point on, Gwen started to get on my nerves. I understood her feelings at first when Katherine came around trying to ruin things... but I felt like she should have questioned Katherine's motivations more and given Matthias a chance to explain or prove himself. I'm not a big fan of running heroines, so Gwen took things too far and for too long to keep me interested in their story.

This book was quite a bit more steamy than the typical historical romance... and I felt like all the intimate moments were well written and the chemistry was quite good. I will probably go back and read the earlier books to see if things make more sense, but I can't fit it into the calendar right away.

I received a copy of this book at no cost from the author in exchange for an honest review. 3 stars / 3 flames. Full review posted at Bambi Unbridled.

Better than the second book - not as good as the first

I enjoyed this book. It opens the morning after Matthias and Gwen stopped Evelyn and Stephen's elopement.

Gwen and Matthias wake up in bed together and nether can remember how they ended up in bed together. They are hazy on what happened the night before. When they find Evelyn in bed with Alec, the blacksmith and learn that they are married, they also learn that Emily and Stephen are missing and Stephen was shot.

Evelyn begs Gwen to distract Matthias so she can go after Stephen. Gwen reluctantly agrees and ends up drugging and abducting Matthias.

They spend several days alone together before Matthias frees himself and turns the tables on Gwen.

When they venture back to the inn, they find out that everyone else has returned to London and Matthias decides he must marry Gwen before they return

Gwen is attracted to Matthias - but has no desire to marry a rake. She has seen first hand what infidelity can do to a marriage and wants no part of that. But to save her reputation she reluctantly agrees.

They return to town and that's when the real trouble starts. Matthias' mistress has learned that he has inherited an earldom and plans to trap him into marriage - until she finds out that he is already married. She then proceeds to destroy their marriage. And very nearly succeeds.

This part of the story dragged a bit for me and while I understood Gwen's POV, I felt she acted a bit immature.

I did like that the author touched on something that is generally overlooked by most authors when writing about a hero who is a man-ho, how the heroine feels about seeing and coming in contact with all the women he has been with and the insecurities she feels because of it. Bravo!!

It takes awhile, but these two finally get their HEA and I really believed that they loved each other. The book is well written, flows at a decent pace, has steamy love scenes and a sweet HEA.

I will most definitely be reading the next book, because I am dying to fin out what happens with Emily and Stephen!

Enjoyed it!

I have come to really enjoy this authors books. All her heroes are the ones doing the chasing. This one had a little more angst to it than previous books. I also liked that the heroine didn't put up with being mistreated. When the hero was dishonest with heroine the first time she forgave him the second time she moved out for months. I feel like all issues were well resolved

I was provided an ARC for this read by the new-to-me author, Kate McKinley. Thank you, KM, for this opportunity!
Let me say up front that historical reads are my all time fave!
I was a teenager of the 70s when "gothic" romances were at their pinnacle, so I tend to like my HRs a little on the dark and stormy side. Additionally, my fave reads must believable in conversations (dialogs) and circumstances (plot archs) of the time period.
But most importantly?
I must feel the "swoon."
Our hero, Matthias, nailed a few really good lines to make me swoon.
"Christ, Gwen," he hissed against her skin. "You taste like a damn miracle."
Totally swoonworthy.
I really liked Matthias as our hero. He did not have insta-love for our heroine, Gwen, but had been building upon an attraction for several years "across the ballroom." I favor this kind of attraction in my romances. Not really a friend-to-lovers troupe, but almost. It also explains (without it needing to be explained) the whys of how our hero became the "captive earl" in the first place! He would have done anything for Gwen, even if it was a madcap idea to take her with him on his quest to save (their) friends from Gretna Green. Oh, secret yearnings can be so delicious!!
There are plenty of twists in this short, light, smexy romp. Not a lot of world building, but right to the chase! I rate this a solid three stars.
I will caution the reader that this story kinda parallels the time frame with book two, Evelyn's story. I did not read book two (or book one), so there was some holes in the story flow for me. With Matthias and Gwen's story starting out with their friends Evelyn and Stephen's journey to Gretna Green...I kept waiting to find out what happened to them, and that blacksmith, and that poor little maid Emily (no conclusion with this one either, just a few ominous hints and one note *sigh* maybe a book for Emily in the future?)
So those holes were a bit of a head-scratcher for me. I had to read the blurb for book 2 to answer some of the parts of Evelyn's (and Stephen's) story left out of this one. Then I wondered about those evil, unfeeling parents of Matthias and Gwen? The reason why our H/h had such trust and confidence issues. We heard from her father (not ENUF groveling for my taste), but nothing from the mums? And my wish for Mrs. Reid? Well. I'm a lady, so let's just say I could have done without her shenanigans!! After all that these two crazy kids had been through, I would have loved Gwen to have had more belief in herself and trusted in (my) her Matthias...and Mrs. Reid be damned ;) You'll just have to read it to find out how their HEA ended ;)

When I read the blurb that was provided for this book, I was under the assumption that it would be a romantic comedy set back in historical England. What I actually found was a delightful combination of flowery language of the Victorian period and erotica. And boy was it erotic. I wouldn't suggest not passing this book onto the younger generation.

I enjoyed the characters of both Gwendolyn and Matthias. They both shared the fact that their childhoods hadn't left them with any warm feelings towards marriage. While Gwen knows that she has to marry to have children, it is something that she plans on putting off for several years. Mattias is in the same boat. He loves the company of women but only if there are no emotions involved.

I did really enjoy the first half of the book but once the crisis point had arrived, the story really fell off. Large gaps of time would pass with hardly any mention. No mention was made of what was being done to repair Gwen and Matthias's marriage. And then the book ended with a rather unsatisfying conclusion.

This really isn't a historical romance that I can recommend to my readers. It does have promise and I will keep my eye out for this author's future releases but I would pass this one by.

*** I received this book at no charge from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.

If you read the previous two books you should be quite familiar with Gwen and Matthias. A quick recap: Pippa married the Duke, the Duke's sister (Evelyn) ran away to marry Stephen but she accidentally married the sexy Highlander, Stephen ran off with Gwen's maid Emily, and Gwen and Matthias are left. Caught up yet? I hope so because this group of Dukes and Earls with their ladies is actually quite funny. Gwen has agreed to keep Matthias busy while Evelyn hunts down Stephen, but I believe she was overwhelmed by the favor. The only plan she comes up with is to drug him and tie him up, apparently for days. You've got to love Gwen, sometimes she seems timid and others she's brave and no nonsense. Matthias on the other hand is a known ladies man but we learn that Gwen has been on his mind on many occasions. This is a historical romance complete with 1800s terminology and fashion plus all the troubles of a modern day romance. It's really unnecessary to read the previous books to enjoy this but it would make more sense as this one happens parallel to them. I read this is two evenings and am sad to say I will miss this group. I was given an early copy by the author for my honest and unbiased review.

Kate McKinley's The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl, book three in her What Happens In Scotland series, shows what happens when two people let go and open their hearts after years of secretly longing for each other. Talk about grabbing the audience's undivided attention, this work with it's lively banter mixed in with serious revelations will keep readers on their toes as they ride the maelstrom of warring emotions that are artfully depicted by Ms. McKinley's fine writing. The dynamic between the hero and heroine, who have consigned themselves to lonely and unfulfilled lives based on past examples of dysfunctional relationships, was well developed and moved this story along nicely. Just the right of amount of humor balanced grave circumstances without distracting from more serious plot points. Ethical and naughty vie for top billing as the leads fight to contain their heated attraction and temper it with their personal misgivings and natural inclination to do right. This is the kind of story that historical romance readers will love and leave them craving more from this extremely entertaining author!

Incompetent. A word Miss Gwendolyn Wrotham has heard her entire life. And clumsy, something her best friend often reminds her. So what could possibly go wrong when she plans the kidnapping of the Earl of Hastings to keep him out of her best friend’s way for a while. When laudanum, rope, and a handsome rogue are involved the results comical.
Revenge is what Matthias Hart, Earl of Hastings, has in mind when he wakes and finds he has been drugged, tied up and held captive. The fact that his captor is young and innocent will not alter his plans. Until he gets a look into the girl behind the front she presents to the world.
A wonderful story that had me laughing, sympathizing, and falling in love right along with Gwendolyn and when Matthias comes to her defense in front of her father…definitely one of the MANY good parts of this story. Watching the layers being peeled back on a notorious rogue is always entertaining and Kate McKinley did this with finesse.
This is the first book by Kate McKinley that I have read and I have to say I am hooked.

I'm on a regency high right now; the blurb promised me fun times and I'm glad that this book didn't disappoint!

At first I was confused going in because it felt like somebody ripped out the first few chapters; I felt like I was dumped in the middle of the story, and it took a while to make sense of everything. Anyway, I was immediately charmed by Gwen and later Matthias (which is one of my favourite names ever). I love them together, I love their verbal sparring, and the way Matthias is basically head over heels over Gwen, and the tension...*fans self*

Despite a thing I disliked , this has been a fun read. I'm definitely interested in checking out Evelyn's book.

A e-copy is received thanks to the author.

When Gwen agrees to help her best friend slip away from the guarding protector, she never thought it would lead to a kidnapping, but now she´s in trouble.
Mattias expected this to be a mission to help a lady from an elopement to Gretna Green, but he wakes up bound and far away from civility. Can he turn this into something they both would enjoy?
Historical romance, fluffy smut and feelings in a great combo, and now I can´t wait to go back and read #2, I need that Scotsman ;)

Probably a 3.5 stars. This was a nice story and I enjoyed reading it. The characters were likable and I believed in their connection. The overall story flowed nicely, but it could have been more cohesive. Some of the dialogue and behaviors seemed a little disjointed to me, but certainly not all of it. There were touches of humor and a bit of intrigue. The author shows promise. I think her books will improve as she writes more of them.

I loved that Gwen could drive Matthias bonkers, some of his reactions were entertaining, even though he was a clearly frustrated man, "Christ. Insufferable woman. “I would not feel compelled to broach such topics in a ballroom if you had seen fit to receive me when I’d called.” I loved this book, I found it entertaining and amusing. I loved Matthias and I loved Gwen even more.

Pleasant

The story was pleasant if somewhat unrealistic. Miss Gwendolyn Wrotham has rushed of to Scotland with Mr.
Matthias Hart and her maid to stop her best friend's elopement. Matthias hadn't wanted her tickle but there was no stopping her. They managed to prevent the wedding and all relaxed and had a party. The next morning she woke up next to Matthias in bed with the both of them fully dressed.
they found her friend, Evelyn, in another room in an extremely compromising position with a man other than Stephen, who she had eloped with. It seemed that she had married the man, Alec, the night before; which nobody could remember. Since Alex had a marriage certificate to hand it seemed that the wedding was not in doubt. Then, when Gwen wondered where her maid Emily was it appeared that she had gone off with Stephen to take him to a hospital since he had been wounded. Matthias, who is Evelyn's brother's best friend, decided that the ladies are to return to London while he waits for Lucas, at which time they will arrange for Evelyn's marriage to be annulled. Evelyn has different ideas though and decided that she is going to follow Stephen and Emily and she wants Gwen to distract Matthias for long enough that he can't follow. Gwen decides that she'll have to kidnap him! All very confusing stuff especially when you consider that it all happens in the first chapter! So begins an unlikely tale in which Gwen managed to drug and kidnap Matthias with, apparently, no idea of the consequences to herself. Matthias does however and, to his surprise, finds that he likes the idea of marrying her very much.
Obviously, there have to be complications and drama before all is done.
I found the whole premise upon which the story was based to be unrealistic. Gwen was supposed to be intelligent but certainly didn't come across as such.
I also had trouble with the totally modern American vernacular and thought processes that was used throughout. Of course, this will make the story easier for most American reader's to understand but doesn't sit well with a story set in Regency England.
Very much a fantasy romance.

This is a quick easy historical romance.
Going to this book I didn't realize it was the third in the series, so I definitely got thrown into the deep-end, just as confused as all the characters as to why the were where they are.

Gwen was a sweet (if not a bit naive) heroine with some hidden fire, and Matthias was your typical rakish gentleman, who just couldn't ditch this helpless maid in scandal of her own doing.
Reading this book was a bit frustrating in some places as the author couldn't seem to decide if the heroine had 'emerald green' or 'azure blue' eyes. Really- it shouldn't be that hard to keep straight. The 'Hero' seemed a bit helpless considering his position and reputation, and the heroine was a bit weak spending weeks at a time moping and wallowing in self pity.

But maybe these things would have made more sense if had read the first two books? *laughs*

I have very mixed feelings about this one.

Firstly, there was the beginning when I had to keep track of who left with whom. I loved Gwen's and Matthias's time in the cottage, it was fun, sexy and swoony! When they got married, though, the drama started. Gwen left because he didn't trust her and then stayed weeks (!) at her friend's house. She didn't talk or sent any message to Matthias and she said she can't go back to him but suddenly, at one ball, she changed her mind. Like one minute she doesn't want him but the next she wants to go home? Nonetheless, the MCs were great, the writing is good and the story quite unique. I just wished I knew more about Gwen's maid because it seemed as though there might be a story about her, but it wasn't indicated.

The Care And Feeding Of Your Captive Earl by Kate McKinley is a fantastic historical romance. Ms. McKinley has delivered a book that is well-written and loaded with amazing characters. Gwendolyn has promised her friend to try to keep Matthias distracted until she can get away on her own mission. So she drugs Matthias and kidnaps him. Gwendolyn and Matthias' story is loaded with drama, humor and sizzle. I totally love the characters in this book. I enjoyed reading The Care And Feeding Of Your Captive Earl and look forward to reading more from Kate McKinley in the future. The Care And Feeding Of Your Captive Earl is book 3 of the What Happens In Scotland Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

REVIEW
Score: 4/5
POV: Dual
Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tropes: Best Friend of Best Friends Sister; Kidnapping (is this a trope?? Lol); Obsessed MMC

I was extremely pleasantly surprised by this book. It was my first time reading a book by this author and it was very good! Both the MMC and FMC are very likable. The book was lacking a bit in the plot department but the heat made up for it. This book is Spicy/hot/whatever you want to call it!
I would definitely read this book again and I will definitely be reading more by this author.

Also one other note about this book I think it is technically stand alone but I could be wrong because I did feel like I was missing some details/info of things that happened in books prior.

Gwendolyn was Fun

I wanted to make sure Gwendolyn got her happy ending, but there were times...Kate is a great storyteller, but her male characters are rather lewd with their language and preoccupation with sex. Graphic scenes, fortunately they are generally without dialogue and skimmable for those of us who want to get back to the story. I really enjoyed Gwen's friendships and the crushes the two of them had on each other, both in denial of it, of course. All in all a fun read.

Gwen has promised her friend that she would kidnap Matthias so that Evelyn could find the man she wants to marry. Well she manages to spirit Matthias away but he gets free. However they are in a remote village and it rains for days. He decided they must marry as her reputation has been ruined. They marry but things don't go smoothly. It is a very interesting and intriguing book. I had to go back and read the previous book to understand exactly what brought them to this situation; but it was worth it.
