I wasn't looking for love, but it found me.

After giving up my dream of becoming a writer in favor of a marriage that was destined to fail, I'd been given a second chance. A chance to discover if after seven years, free-spirited Evie Rivers still lay beneath the surface.

For eight weeks, it would be just me, my laptop, and the wintry Hamptons landscape. No distractions, no interruptions. At least, that was the plan. Until he came along.

Adam Walker. He was a smart, sexy Englishman hell bent on helping me find what I had lost: myself. He laughed easily and found the good in every situation, but I couldn't help wondering what sadness lay behind the smile that slipped when he let his guard down.

Suddenly, though eight weeks doesn't feel like long enough, maybe eight weeks can be all it takes to change your life forever.

Broken by Lisa Edward
4.5 stars!!!

“I wish we’d had a lifetime together. I feel like I’ve wasted my life with all the wrong people.”

Lisa Edward is one of those authors that never fails to wring out every single emotion I possess with her words and Broken was no different. Yes, this was an emotional read in parts, but for the most part this was an incredibly beautiful romance with two stunning characters that totally deserved a happy every after.

“You’re going to be trouble for me, aren’t you?”
“I hope so…”

Evie Rivers was an erotica author in college, but her work had a more Victorian feel, especially in vocabulary. This was an erotica author that used the words “throbbing sword” and “tunnel of love.” Evie was incredibly naïve and terribly sheltered. She married a preacher, lost her “V Card” on her wedding night and has lived an incredibly dull existence ever since, there were never any sparks let alone fireworks. The absence of kids was the final nail in the coffin that was her marriage and now our sheltered author needs to bring back her erotica writing alter ego to survive on her own.

Evie takes off to the Hamptons, hires a beach house for eight weeks so that she can resurrect her writing, she needed to take stock of her life, clear her cobwebs and try to work out what she was going to do with her life.

Adam Walker was taking a sabbatical too, spending his eight weeks in the Hamptons to sort his life out, he had a broken heart and he too had decisions to make. He chose the Hamptons so that he could paint, something he had wanted to do for years and was now taking the time out to do. Adam was British but had followed the “love of his life” to America, now spending his time between the two countries. Our Adam has a penchant for skinny dipping in the arctic sea and it is while watching this pastime that Evie and Adam first meet.

“It was fireworks, the elusive fireworks that I had dreamed of my entire life, and all from just one kiss. But no just any kiss – it was the kiss that could make you forget every other that had come before it.”

Adam and Evie forge a great friendship, being an English teacher he helps Evie with her writer’s block and introduces her to a much more modern vocabulary with hilarious results. Adam and Evie hit it off straight away, Adam bringing her out of her shell and Evie just bringing him back to life. The build in their relationship was a beautiful read, but the comedic elements really lightened the seriousness and yet gave both Adam and Evie that “normal” characterisation. These were people you could relate to and with Lisa Edward’s words a couple that will soon bury themselves into your heart.

“… ‘a piece of my heart’ came about because when you love someone, you give ‘em a piece of the whole and it becomes an island that’s just for them. They fill that piece, and all the memories and all the feelin’s that they invoke are etched there. After they’re gone, it’s a place that you can sail to any time to relive memories, or you can choose to abandon if it becomes too painful.”

Broken is a book within a book as Lisa Edward’s cleverly weaves Evie’s writing within the pages of her own, add into the mix Adam’s journal entries and you really get an insight into his inner thoughts and most of all his emotions. Adam was extremely vulnerable albeit a happy go lucky charmer on the outside and it was this fragility that really tugs at every heart string. Evie has her insecurities too but just being around Adam starts to chip away at them. These two really brought the best out of each other. These two just fit, they were peanut butter and jelly, they were Ben & Jerry’s and shark week.

“Besides, I figured if you could defuzz, then so could I…I thought a raccoon had climbed through the window and gone to sleep in your waste basket in the bathroom; then I realized it was your beaver, ripped out on wax strips.”

Eight weeks is a short time in the grand old scheme of things but these two were definitely more than a two-month fling. Their lives are totally opposite, these two have a lot of hurdles, but will true love win? Or are some hurdles just too high?

“He read your book over and over… You’re not a bad writer. Some of the sex scenes were pretty hot…he said they were based on real life, but there’s no way he’s that good.” ~ Will

I adored this book, I laughed, I cried, I swooned. From skinny dipping, to writing sex scenes, to the beach, to ice-skating there was nothing I didn’t love. For emotional readers like me, this is a must read but even if you are just in the mood for a heart melting romance then this ticks the boxes too. Once again, Lisa Edward delivered and I cannot wait to see what comes next…maybe Will is up next…possibly with Angie?

What happens when two broken people find themselves drawn together?
A beautiful love story is what happens!

I was gifted Broken by Lisa Edward and I have to say it was a wonderful romance story that tugs on the heartstrings. I really do love books that allow me the chance to feel everything the characters are feeling. This book gave me that and so much more.

When Evie went on a journey of self discovery, she never encountered that she would meet someone else as broken as her. Years prior Evie gave up her writing to allow a man mould her into someone she wasn’t. She agreed to a marriage she knew would never work.

Adam is a man lost, a man who relocated to be with a woman he loved only to discover she didn’t feel the same in return. When he travels to the Hamptons for eight weeks to deal with some major changes in his life he never imagined he would meet a woman like Evie.

This is a compelling story that made me very emotional. I fell in love with both these characters because their stories were heartbreaking and extremely well written. You want nothing more but the best for them both and get pulled into a rollercoaster of emotions when you go through each little thing they have to deal with.

There are so many things I could say, but I believe it’s a book you should really go and buy and get lost in. You won’t regret it.

This is a five star read for me.

Beautifully Broken
I adore this book. The characters were superbly crafted. I loved Evie. She was full of spirit and such a strong woman considering all she’s been through. Enter Adam Walker. He is British. Enough said!
Their chemistry sizzled off the pages. They connected in a way which instantly had you rooting for the couple to make it through.
This story isn’t your typical romance. There are twists and turns and tears...but BROKEN is so worth the ride!

I liked this, and I didn't at the same time. The story, for the first 2/3 was good, but it lost me toward the end.

But, without spoilers, I really didn't like the ending. I like reality, but only so much of it, as I do read romance after all.

Evie is a little broken at the beginning, but she is figuring it out. She is taking her life in her own hands, and she is figuring it out. And, into her figuring it out steps the skinny dipping neighbor 2 houses over.

Adam has a secret. One he is not telling Evie, or the reader. But, it weighs on the book as you know there is something there.

For me, the secret kept the story from ever taking off, and I started to get annoyed with Adam for continuing to get deeper into a relationhip with Evie and still not tell her. I was also annoyed by the resolution, I just didn't believe it. Well, I guess in one way I did, but it just didn't seem realistic to me. With the past and the history they each have, I didn't believe that either of them would act in the way they did.

And, the ending. It is not possible to discuss it without spoilers...but I didn't love it. I didn't step away from this feeling the way I should after a compelling romance that engages my heart. I wasn't a little in love with Adam...and that goes back to the way he treated the revelation of the secret.

There was also a "surprise" that I thought was oddly obvious. And, at the same time, a bit of a cop-out, as the story around this would have been interesting, and would have forced some interesting revelations that were skipped due to the time jump. I really felt the "meat" of the story was left, lost in that jump in time.

All in all, I am really not able to recommend this book...and really not able to fully explain why.

Evie is a little quirky which is nice. It’s refreshing how she isn’t jaded or overly sexy. She’s working things out as she goes along. Adam is quick with sweet gestures like offering to cook and give back rubs. They have a few spats that come on suddenly and resolve easily. Their behaviors are a bit wishy-washy and insta sometimes, but their kind hearts are attractive. Evie and Adam are definitely made for each other.
Broken is full of über romance. There are walks on the beach, candles, bubble baths, massages, heart-felt gifts and more. It does have a few detailed sexy scenes, but it’s definitely made for the uncynical in search of a love story.

Get the tissues ready because you are going to need them for Broken by Lisa Edward. The book will send you through an emotional upheaval, and I will admit to almost throwing my kindle a time or two.

Evie is just getting out of a loveless, passionless marriage and has moved up north. Her best friend has convinced her to start writing again, and even signed her on as a new author with her agency. To push Evie a little more, she rents a house in the Hampton's for two months in the winter...and that is where Evie meets Adam. She was looking for a character and upon seeing him, he became her character. He's nothing like her ex, and she can't help but fall for him when he helps her in so many different ways.

Adam went to the Hamptons to deal with some major changes in his life. His plan was to spend two months, return home to England, and not leave any ties or anything back in the States, but then he meets Evie and everything changes. He falls in love and his world is turned upside down. Can he overcome what's holding him back?

Broken was an emotional read for me, but it was worth it. There were a few times when it dragged, but it was well written and I loved the interaction between Adam and Evie. They both deserved a happy ending. 4 stars! One click today!!

Lisa Edward is one of my go to authors, she has been for quite sometime, so when I seen she was putting out another book I was instantly ready to pounce! Thank goodness I pounced on this one, it was a great read! If you haven't read any of her other books you need to get on it ASAP, my favorite series was the Songbird series. I would give this book a 4 stars and highly recommend to others. This book is a very emotional read that will rip at your heartstrings but a beautiful story non the less.

Evie and Adam are both broken in there own ways... they find themselves drawn together while both are seeking solace on the beach of the Hampton's.. but what neither expect is to find there soul mate? Can these two help each other pick up the broken pieces and put the puzzle back together again??

Get to one clicking to see what happens in this whirlwind romance you don't want to miss it! But you may need a few tissues just FYI! Thanks Lisa for another great story and I look forward to much more in the near future.

Romance, Erotica writer in college, get married! Yeah, you would think that she was living the dream, but no, she was living in isolation and loneliness. She is ready to start over, can she get what she dreamed of so long ago?
Defeated, but living on his own terms, going abroad to live and adventure before it was to late. Can he out run his sadness?
They never thought they would get a chance at something beautiful and remarkable. Both running away from something, but fate had them running to each other.
I love, love, loved reading this heart felt funny and tear jerking romance of a woman that just wanted and adventure, to be loved, to feel the passion she wrote about, but never thinking she would get it. Then at the moment she sets out to begin her journey, he runs into her life...naked! Yeah not what she expected but hey, these are things that make adventures worth it right? An what and adventure they have...TOGETHER.

The question is which of the two is more broken and holds more secrets. Adam and Evie meet in a wonderful way which he loves and hat embarrasses Evie and her prime and proper state. A state that over the upcoming 8 weeks slowly is replaced with the new and adventurous person she opens up to become. Adam is carefree and open, supportive, loving and kind, peaches and roses or at least that's what it seems. Although time is slipping away and he has to return to England and promises are made.

Waiting to find out if he will return Evie lives each moment. Will the book he helped her with come out and be a success, can she be a success at something she has little experience at. Will he return, will his art be a success. Lots of questions all answered in this well written and emotional read. Great read and wonderful characters you can't help but cheer for them to succeed and their love to help bridge the challenges they face together and individually. Get your tissues ready you may need them for this one.

This was a book, within a book, within a book, and boy did I feel every page turn!

This was a real roller-coaster of a read. It started off a bit too slowly for me. By 30% of the way through, I was considering not finishing it. By halfway through I was determined to get to the end. By 75% of the way through I was crying, uncontrollably, thank to the emotive storyline. At 100% of the way through I loved the book and truly treasured the story and its characters. So why the mixed feelings?

For some reason I wasn’t able to fully connect with the story from the start. The author’s writing was amazing but it didn’t give me that immediate punch that I look for in memorable books. I thought the story premise was an interesting one, although I’m not a huge fan of stories about writers (please don’t shoot me). This book told the story of two people brought together at the Hamptons, both looking for something but not expecting to find love. From the minute Evie Rivers, our aspiring writer in this story, sets her eyes on the mysterious Adam Walker, it’s clear where this story is heading. Spending the next 8 weeks together we get to hear Evie’s story and are left questioning Adam’s reasons for travelling to the Hamptons. I think I wore myself out trying to second guess his story but when I reached about 70% of the way through the book my mind was on overdrive and hoping what I was thinking wouldn’t come to fruition (hence the tears).

Even by the end of the book, Evie was still not a character that I could relate to. From innocence to porn, I just felt that her life came across like mixed up jigsaw but that may have been what the author was looking for in her. Adam was a different story. I immediately loved his easygoing ways and I could definitely feel his attraction to Evie. From his naked swims to his cooking and painting skills, who wouldn’t be sold on him and add a fragility into his emotional arsenal and I dare a single reader not to feel the pull of his heartstrings.

The story took a real turn for me with the introduction of Adam’s twin brother and I feel that perhaps that this is where I struggled with the book. I find that I need a really strong supporting cast to carry me into a story, irrespective of how good the stars of the book are. I did really fall for Will though and loved the bond he shared with Adam.

I am not a great fan of emotional reads and this I know will be a huge hit with some of my book buddies. That said, I am hugely impressed at the author’s ability to combine the overall story with Evie’s book scenes and Adam’s journal entries so fluently.

This book ranged from a 3 Star to a 4 Star and even a 5 Star read for me so, I’m settling on 4 Stars but this, for most people, is sure to be a resounding success and a story which will remain in readers’ hearts for a long time. Just not for this broken, jaded, hopeless romantic!

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤(4 Buttercup Stars)
Broken is a lovely and heartwarming read that will makes you feel giddy, swoony and maybe on the verge of tearing up sometimes. This is a love story between a British guy who is a painter-slash-English teacher with a romance writer that comes from Southern America.

Firstly I must say that I am truly surprised and delighted upon realizing that Adam Walker is portrayed as the hot British hero because I am such a sucker at those dreamy accent. *Sigh* And by the way, this guy love to skinny-dipping! *Double sigh*

Besides having those divine and heavenly attributes, I am also loving the fact that Adam is so understanding and supporting to Evie especially when Evie is working on her novel. That is totally in contrast to Evie's ex-husband and I dig that.

I am also loving Evie Rivers as the heroine because I find myself immersed in her journey to finish a romance novel right from the start when she was struggling towards the end when she is writing the acknowledgements. I like the meta that was happening in the book specifically the time where I am reading this incredible romance novel and the character inside it is also reading a romance novel. That is wickedly genius and I love it a lot.

I think Broken gives off the vibe where strangers meet on a vacation and the falls in love during that vacation time. Except it is not really a vacation for both characters as Evie is there to finish her writing after her marriage fails and Adam is there because he wants to run away from having to deal with his illness. I love the part where Evie and Adam gradually falls in love with each other, the anxiety of their upcoming separation, the super long but needed separation and the reunion along with the miracle that comes.

Things that I love about the book:
1. The part where Evie secretly watched Adam skinny-dipping and hilariously got caught by him. That is really funny and I was a bit embarrassed for her but only for a bit because I love that scene.
2. I love that Adam called Evie Buttercup! I love endearments so much and I am swooning like a schoolgirl every time he calls her that. And I like the part where he takes her buttercup-yellow sweater during the separation.
3. The scene where Adam is teasing Evie in one of their early encounters about her using funny words for the man and lady parts in her old works. LOL. The type of words she used really cracked me up!

Things that I can live without from the book:
1. Annabel! She is not really hateful when compared to other hateful characters in the literary world but I still don't like her. I don't like her during the first time Evie met her and I really don't like her when she doesn't let Evie visit Adam at the hospital. But yeah I can understand the significance of her character but I still don't like her.
2. Adam's twin.Okay. it is not that I dislike Will, in fact I like his character but I was kind of thrown off guard when Will suddenly appeared in the story. I wish I was somehow introduced to his character before he made the appearance.

All in all, I think that Broken is really a fabulous love story that I really enjoyed reading and I would recommend it to romance lovers who is seeking for a good time to be engrossed in lovely romance fiction.

Review : “Broken” by Lisa Edward has such an innocent blurb – but the reader should be warned that the story could in fact get gut wrenching at certain points depending on the kind of reader you are.

I had this feeling throughout reading and no matter what the author was saying at that moment my gut was telling me something and he was right as it turned out.

Yet even though it was gut wrenching in a way that should mean “crying a river” – I did in fact NOT do that … which only leaves the book at 4 instead of 5 stars.

I really liked the leading characters and some extra points go to the dog a secondary character.

Also the story is pretty well developed and written until a certain point when the twist comes that I am talking about as “gut wrenching” I feel the author did not hit the note it would have needed in order to bring across the point that was meant to happen.

#Hence the for me not so gut wrenching feeling - I knew what I was supposed to feel but listening deep inside it was not happening (yeah I know cryptic much – sorry but avoiding spoilers)

Anyway I totally loved the book writing part –“Homework … to write 10 other names instead of”… (really I was laughing so hard) it felt so real and I could totally relate to the hilarious conversations between the two leading characters.

In total a really recommendable read ...

Evie is finally free of the suffocating marriage to a man who tried to make her into someone else, and never appreciated the true her. Adam is trying to regroup after finding out the woman he relocated thousands of miles to be with, doesn’t really love him, and his health is in jeopardy. Two broken people who end up neighbors on the same beach for eight weeks.

This couple didn’t really know what they were searching for until they found it in each other. Their relationship helps them grow as individuals, and as a couple. Evie’s love gives Adam the strength to deviate from his first plans, but he is hiding a secret from Evie, and he will leave her at the end of the eight weeks, only he does promise to come back…in ten months.

This read was both emotional and fun. Adam’s wit and sense of humor helped Evie to find her own inner smartass. He also helped her reclaim her writing voice with lots of “hands on” guidance. The brief appearances of both their exes is no surprise. Evie's is handled beautifully, Adam's...not so much...you know, because of his secret. I totally understood his reasons for keeping things from her - I just don't agree with him...he should have told her.

****

Pros:

Evie and Adam are very likable characters.

They have a good chemistry and you can’t help but want them together.

Cons:

The story bogs down a bit at around seven and a half weeks. Too much "telling" – too many inner thoughts. I skimmed.

What transpires during their time apart is recounted through inner thoughts and conversations. Would have been nice to “see” some of it.

****

Very good read and I do recommend it. Don’t get stories often enough where a couple is solely focused on each other despite outside influences. There are uncertainties, and there are obstacles, but Evie and Adam are determined to be together.

Enjoy!

OK I'm writing this only minutes after finishing, I seriously need to get it all out.

Thank you for delivering a beautifully written book. The story of Evie and Adam is perfect. Life isn't meant to be easy, we all face challenges, some more obstacles than others, but the will to survive and overcome these obstacles is the true strength and testament of a person.
Evie was a well rounded woman, not letting her first marriage define her and out of reach of love. Her passion and dreams as a writer were well crafted and her love for Adam shone through from the beginning.
Adam was touching, his sweet dreamy demeanor was a true testament to a man who was going to love with all that he could. His love for Evie was beautiful and gave him the means to carry on.
Together as a couple they were perfectly paired. The hiccups they face is life, misunderstanding are normal but it was there ability to love and hold on to that love that was paramount till the end.

The writing of Lisa Edwards is truly captivating, I have sat here all day and read from start to finish. This book tore at the heart strings and brought fresh tears flowing.

Evie Rivers is divorcing her husband, Charles, after seven years. Charles is a preacher and very controlling where Evie is concerned. She goes away for eight weeks to the Hamptons. Her friend sets her up with a beach house. Evie is a writer and after years she wants to start again. Adam Walker is english and goes to the Hamptons to make a life changing decision. He and his dog Max are playing on the beach when he sees Evie watching them. Max loves Evie and always goes to her house to visit. One day Adam comes to get Max and they strike up a friendship. Adam is a seventh grade English teacher and he helps Eve with her research and grammar as she tries to write again. They really hit it off and start to spend a lot of time together. Like all things they both have lives that interfere with theirs. I loved this book and I read until two am to get it finished. The writer really grabs your attention and holds it. This book does contain profanity and some sex scenes. The story is well written and will draw you in. this is a great read

Ok, this book as cheesy as it is, it almost made me cry.

I approach romantic/erotica literature to disconnect and just pick at my happy feelings while I read them and normally they do the job and I am 3-stars content.

But this one made me emotional, perhaps is because I am not used to read this kind of doomed-MC stories, so the one I read affects me.

Whatever the reason, I give it 4 starts for leaving me on the verge of tears, painful-enjoyable kind of tears, the ones that make you so sad that you enjoy crying.

I really enjoyed this book. It was one of my favorites by Lisa Edward. While I really enjoyed Songbird this book doesn't compare. It can't compare because they are totally different. I loved them both for very different reasons! You must read this book! If you loved Songbird read this. If you didn't care for Songbird read this!!!!

This book is emotional and will have tears filling your eyes. You'll probably be a little upset, but you'll understand and then be sad all over again. I loved this!!

You will fall in love with Evie and Adam. You'll love following their journey. It was an emotional ride but so worth it!!! I'm really hoping we get Will and Angie's story!

Needing to get away to jump start her writing career Evie rents a house on the beach in the Hamptons. She’s trying to find herself after her bad sex marriage of eleven years to a preacher. Thirteen years ago she had written some erotica for fun but never perused that as it wasn’t what her husband wanted her to do with their life. New life, new career, new Evie needs a new man.

On the surface Adam is fun and flirty. I got the impression that Adam was hiding something and that that something was going to turn out to be something big. None the less he is what Evie needs at this stage in her life. He’s an English man teaching English in the United States. He is in Hampton’s because he had always wanted to paint there. Meeting Evie changes why he truly went there though.

Broken should have been a did not finish DNF for me. I knew early on where this book was going and how it was going to get there. I had to see if I was correct. I jumped around and skimmed a lot. There are what I can see to be some likeable aspects for some within the pages. It still was not enough for me to find enjoyable.

As a woman born and raised in the south (Louisiana, Mississippi) I could not read Evie’s dialogue without wanting to bleach my eyes. Any word that came out of her mouth that should have ended in ing was said in’ NO! I’m going to say especially no due to the fact that if she is that much of a hick she should have said fixin’ numerous times as well. She did not. Since this is simply how country Evie is there were other hick discrepancies. She nicknames Adam Sugar, its sweet. Any bona fide southern hick would have said Suga’.

I did jump forward to where the couple went their separate ways after the best eight weeks of their lives. I skimmed that. I then jumped forward to the reunion to see if all the assumptions I’d made in those first fifty pages were correct. I’m quite astute. I then jumped forward to the epilogue to see if any major revelations were made. Sadly no, this just wasn’t a good choice in reading material for me.

An enchanting emotional roller coaster of love and hope.
Evie was seeking solitude to write a novel after leaving her husband and their not so good marriage.
Adam was seeking solitude after life altering news.
When they become neighbours for a couple of months neither thought they would meet their soul mate, but with Adam swimming in the nude outside her window and Evie asking questions about lovemaking for her novel, soon things went from cool to hot quickly. But then it is time for the vacation to end but with the promise of meeting again in 10 months.
On their return they each have been keeping secrets, will these things break them apart or draw them closer together?
Loved this story, laughed and cried.

After leaving a loveless marriage, Evie Rivers heads to the Hamptons in Winter to lick her wounds and re discover her writing. Adam Walker is there also.
For eight weeks, they experience life and love. Both are changed at the end of that eight weeks. Is two months enough when you find your soulmate?

A story of love, second chances and hope. Adam and Evie are two souls on the edge that needed one another to help heal. I began reading and was so enthralled with the characters and story that I did not want to put it down. I laughed, cried and had to laugh again through the tears while reading. An emotional story that I would definitely recommend and should be read by all who love romance.

I only made it 14% before I stopped. The story wasn't bad, just not what I was looking for. I couldn't relate to the characters and that is very important to me. I may read it another time, I'm just not interested now.
I was provided an e-arc by Netgalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing)
