Combat!: No Rest For Heroes

Rate this book
14 December, 1944...
There was a Panzer division where no Panzer division should have been.

The reason had to be leaned-or the Allies' entire attack on German might fail.

Lt. Gil Hanley and the rest of his division needed a rest after weeks of savage battle which had left them depleted and weak...

But there could be no rest for Hanley and his right hand man, Sgt. Chip Saunders. For them there was to be a mission-a mission behind enemy lines, from which they might never return!

This is a compelling novel of the war as our men really fought it, based on Lt. Gil Hanley, Sgt. Chip Saunders, and the men of the great COMBAT! television show on ABC-TV.

This was a pretty good book for a book about 'Combat!', but as just a book, it was not so great.

The plot of the book itself was not that interesting and very heavy on technical planning rather than action. There were a few interesting action scenes and plot twists, but at the end of the book I wondered where I had missed the climax.

As for the characters, we followed Lieutenant Hanley through his actions and a lot of his stream of concisenesses thoughts. I may have gained incite into Hanely, but I don't think I really did because I doubt the author actually knew who Hanley was based on the fact that other than Sergeant Saunders and Caje (who they called Cadron when not speaking), none of the characters were any of the regular squad members. Saunders seemed very distant and not so bright at times because Hanley always knew better than him and Saunders never fought back, and that leads me to conclude that Calin never knew Saunders either.

I recommend this book to any crazed fan of 'Combat!' because they will want to read it anyway because it is an authentic 'Combat!' book. At this point, I enjoyed reading "Counter Attack" better.
