This is a personal favorite of mine from my childhood, so I'm giving it three stars for that reason alone. Trying to reread it again now, I can't imagine why I used to like it so. The main character (Carol Ann) goes on and on and ON about how she wants to be someone else. It's like just do it already and stop bitching about it! The only reason I probably liked this when I was younger is because our library didn't have much of a YA section.

Carol Ann Delaney is the oldest child of an Irish father and Gypsey mother growing up in rural Arkansas. She graudates from high school in 1982....what a great year! This author also wrote the more well known book "The Summer of My German Soldier."

It's 1982 in Bainesville, Arkansas. Carol Ann Delaney, a senior in high school and the daughter of a drunk and a Gypsy, struggles with identity, family loyalty, possibilities, and making her own way in life. It was a pleasure to read another of Bette Greene's novels.

I love how it explanes her life as it's going by. It has a wonderful theme and excelent ways of explaining things. The ending was very disappointing though.
