This was just OK. It's the story of two sisters who were the galaxy's most notorious thieves. When their identities were revealed they went into hiding and become... bounty hunters? The premise doesn't really hold up to scrutiny and the story was told in a disjointed out of order method that made it hard to follow. The art was chaotic and full of so much crap that I had a hard time following the action. Mindy Lee's faces were angular and kind of fugly. The book was also full of anachronisms. They are flying around space but still using the same iphone as I do and texting, plus emoticons were still a thing (I really hope those have went the way of the dodo a hundred years from now.)
This was a fun book. I enjoy the way Wiebe writes women, though I would have liked it better if one of the characters were on screen queer. The art is cool and fun, and I really like the way the characters look; Nina looks like she can fuck your shit up, and I love it. I would definitely be willing to read more adventures of the Gadflies.
There were some small flaws, but I pretty much loved this. More tears for me, because I always fall in love with the short-lived feminist comics, and apparently there's no more of this one. 😭
Wiebe made a bunch of work available online for free during the coronavirus quarantine, so I was able to check out stories beyond the familiar to me Rat Queens and Peter Panzerfaust. I wasn't sure about these space bounty hunters at first but, by the third issue, I was sucked in. Above all, I love the hacker. And the robot doctor. It feels like the origin story of a motley crew so I'm curious to see if the series went anywhere.
This was pretty fun. I don't think it lives up to the debut that Rat Queens enjoyed and it took a few re-reads of early pages before I could sort out what was happening. I do like the dialogue between characters but the banter also falls shy of Rat Queen fun. I'm planning to see this through, but it'll take a bit more to get the bounty on my love and adoration.
love, love LOVE this. its colourful with just as colourful strong only some skin and not riduk showing females, the world is cool and interesting, theres a cat and fake monkeys and best of all they agree with and see the importance of the pronunciation of library!
SPACE SH*T! This comic is super sci-fi-y and witty and yay. I’m not a huge sci-fi fan, BUT I knew I had to pick this book up because it’s written by Kurtis J. Wiebe, who is, if you don’t already know (and if you don’t, you’re a total f*cking loser and GET LEARN’T), the writer/creator of RAT QUEENS. Yes. The Rat Queens guy who makes all of our female high-fantasy dreams come true. So being a major Rat Queens fan, how could I not pick up his new title, Bounty? Well I could not… not… so I did! Wow, grammar.
So yaaaa, if you like space sh*t, you’ll probs like this. I myself get totally freaked out by space and space things, so this story is a little out of my comfort zone. I definitely enjoyed this comic, but of course I had a major bias going into it because to be honest, I was hoping it would be Space-Rat-Queens. Unfortunately, it was not that. But also that’s not unfortunate because it really holds its own and has very unique (and awesome) characters. Still has the wit and humor in it that I love about Rat Queens though, and the dialogue is on point. You may be wondering why I gave it only 3 stars, seeing as how I have only good things to say about it and, WELL, I think I just don’t like space. LOL. I enjoy fantasy settings and plots way way way more, I’m just not as into space guns and spaceships and space-things. Galactic drama? Not for me. But if you like sci-fi, and you also like laughing (HAHA) then I’m sure you’ll really enjoy this.
(Spoilers) My favorite scene is where Nina and Indra are on their (first?) date. Actually, their relationship is probably one of my favorite things about this comic. The dialogue between them is kinda sexy and fun at the same time, and I like how their relationship is interwoven into the plot. ALSO. Major diversity points! Lots of different body types/shapes/colors, and I particularly liked how the female body was depicted. Each female character was a unique representation of physical female performativity, and of course that only added to my enjoyment of the story.
Definitely check this one out if you’re a sci-fi fan. Even if it’s just for the robot/AI humor Wiebe throws in there with the Robot Doctor character, it’ll be totally worth it. Oh also duh, THE ART. The art is cute and colorful and fantastic!
It's just... it's just Kim & Kim Vol. 1. But straight. And... better-written, which I kind of hate. I hate to admit that I like the straight version better. But it's the same setup, aesthetic, millennial sensibility, and characters, only it makes sense? Is coherent? Ugggh. I wish it was queer.
I didn't love it, I still reads like something played at 1.5 speed. You don't have time to get attached and the reveals don't always make total sense. I still don't understand most of the things that were happening with the hacker girl or exactly what happened with Indra (didn't Nina only know him for a couple of days?) but still. It was readable, and Kim & Kim honestly wasn't.
What really mystifies me is that no one else seems to have noticed these are the same book. They're not recommended together or mentioned in reviews or anything. Are queer comics really that far removed?
Fantastic art with great body shape diversity, passable worldbuilding, alright characters... But I just couldn't get invested. I'll read the next one if it passes through my hands - I just don't know that I'd seek this one out. Sad, because I do love domestic nonsense in space, but this felt rushed and flat, and the characters didn't have much depth beyond their assigned role (the brains, the brawn, the hacker, the boyfriend). That could be a first volume issue. We'll see.
High-flying sci-fi action abounds as the Gadflies, a group of bounty hunters, hunt down criminals to make ends meet while running from their own unsavory pasts. This fresh comic is packed with bold, psychedelic illustrations, and I highly recommend it to fans of Magdalene Visaggio’s “Kim & Kim” comics (or vice versa, if you haven’t read those yet).
Picked it up because the cover featured rad female POC characters and the art looked fun. The story dragged a bit. The humor was either forced or flat. The art was colored nicely. The creative direction of all the digital hacking moments was surprisingly fresh and interesting. It reads like a beginner's graphic novel but wasn't bad overall.
Reluctantly closer to 2.5 than 3 stars, I did not enjoy this quite as much as I liked the concept or the author's Rat Queens series. I think I just found it a bit to piecemeal and disjointed so that I never really felt immersed in the storyline or connected to the characters.
The art though was very vibrant, the beginning gripping and it had some little twists that I appreciated.
Bref. J'ai pas accroché.
I love the representation of a jacked woman still being incredibly sexy! It was super nice to see especially being someone with muscles and hearing people tell me "not to get too big" so this made a big impact on me in that sense.
Two sisters create new identities as bounty hunters when their careers as bandits nearly gets them killed, but the past comes back to haunt them when a former victim is out for their blood.
The in media res beginning made me think I'd accidentally picked up a later volume but I quickly realized what was actually happening. It was a fun read and this volume is a well-contained story.
And I expected such great things. The art was amazing. Bounty hunters 👌👌 but the storyline was so uninteresting and freaking hard to follow... What even happened? Lol
