FTC DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

I really wanted to like this one, but the constant talk of drugs (including a middle school student's usage) and the many inconsistencies prevented that. There were sweet moments in this story, but they were often overshadowed by Trey or Sam making decisions (including major ones) for Lucy -- something she belatedly (as in, during the next-to-last chapter) declared in an angry rant that she'd never let anyone do to her again. Where was that decision three hundred pages prior to that moment?

Something about the ending that really irked me is that there was a "skeletal framing of... [a] new house." What was the point of the plot to this book if all the work done got disqualified in that single sentence? Because of that one sentence, I came away from this book feeling like I had wasted my time getting excited about the pretty updates to the grounds and buildings on the farm.

I liked that there was a fairly quick pace to this book. Overall, the story flowed well and surprised me in plenty of places. Another great feature was family. This entire series revolved around the Stafford family, and I liked how that family was built upon book by book, keeping the reader updated on the goings on with previous leads as the series progressed.

This series will find many fans, I am certain.

Content also included tobacco products.

It was a pleasure to read the story of the youngest Stafford son, Trey. Trey was adopted as a toddler and made his way as a country star in Nashville. In his return to Washington state and the Double S Ranch he is able to find peace.

Good series!

"Peace In The Valley" by Ruth Logan Herne

My Thoughts....

I loved this heartfelt tear jerking read of the last series: Double S Ranch # 3...Peace In The Valley this only this author can give to her readers. What a beautiful read of a story of what will happens when one puts the past behind and now it's about faith and the family. The main story was of Trey
Stafford and Lucy Carlton however we are also given many secondary characters [Sam] and a few others that were truly indeed special in this very powerful moving read. Not only was this a romantic cowboy story but so much more. I loved how this author gives us a story of what will happen when a family turn to God for some healing of past wounds and we are even given some inspirational scriptures the were there to give them 'strength or encouragement' at the perfect time. The story is definitely giving the reader a heartwarming story with Trey, Lucky and her children[Cade & Cody]. In the end the reader is given on fascinating story that will include quite a lots of messages that will be woven into this story giving the readers 'Gods' grace, embracing and forgiving one another as through love they are given second chances. This author really did a well good job at giving the readers a fantastic ending in this series. To get the whole story of Double S Ranch three book series get..." Back in the Saddle...Home on the Ranch and Peace In The Valley.' The reader will truly enjoy all of them!

I love Ruth Logan Herne's books. She writes with such heart! I have been anticipating this last book in the Double S series for quite a while and she does not disappoint.

Herne has created a cast of characters that appear to be real, they have the same types of problems normal, every day folks have, they struggle as we do and trust God as we do. The reader feels Herne's heart for God in her writing. She feels like home, too. I don't know any other way to describe it other than this. Reading a Ruth Logan Herne book is like sitting down with a beloved friend to pass the time, loving every minute and leaving with a full heart. Her books are on my keeper shelf!

A missed Stop sign creates a chance meeting, thankfully one in which no one is badly hurt. Trey Walker Stafford is returning home to Washington to perform the biggest sacrifice of his life. To donate a part of his liver for his ailing father Sam. Though not a direct relative, he is the perfect match, and he feels he must do this one thing for the man who saved him as a child after the death of his parents. Growing up on the Double S Ranch, Trey was afforded all the opportunities to follow in the footsteps of his father and brothers. However, he took a path towards the Country Music scene, desperate to prove to everyone that it was possible to be in the 'business' and avoid the pitfalls and traps of drug and substance abuse. Now a big time star, he is back, and searching for the answers to the questions that have plagued him since he lost his own wife, star in her own right Cathy, to the same destruction of his parents.

Lucy Carlton has struggled to withstand the powerhouse of the Double S and Sam Stafford for years. Being neighbors and competing landowners, their relationship has been strained and resented. Fallen into disrepair her property and life as single mom to her 3 young children and sister in law Ashley is surviving on a day by day basis. When the accident leaves her vehicle and only source of income destroyed, she has no desire to have anything more to do with the Stafford's, including the handsome country music star that ran her off the road.

As we've read in the previous 2 books in this series, Sam is on a pathway of repentance and making amends with his fellow townsmen and neighbours. He asks Trey to intervene and do whatever must be done to make things right for their neighbor Lucy. Fix the house and outbuildings. New car. As her heart softens to the assistance she is being given, and their friendship blossoms, secrets lie underneath that may destroy the fragile arm of forgiveness.

Both incredibly likeable characters, you will develop empathy for both of them. Seeing the world through both of their eyes, is so vastly different, yet, in so many ways they are alike.

There are some gaps in the plot. Trey heavily insistent on honesty, and communication, yet fails to share with Lucy the biggest part of the storyline - his distaste for drug use and why, and his own inability to share with her his donation of an organ to his father.

However, overall I loved this story, getting to know Trey, who has previously entered our existence in the previous 2 books, but only briefly. This is beautiful story of second changes, forgiveness, family and love in a western setting. The Double S series from Ruth Logan Herne has been fantastic. I truly recommend it.

I am not a fan of the decision to only print this 3rd book in mass market, since the other 2 are in trade. It looks ridiculous on my shelf and in my mind will not appear part of the set to the customer in a bookstore, especially if it gets categorized separately in location.

Thanks to Blogging for Books & Multnomah Waterbrook for the complimentary copy. This is my honest review.

If you’ve been following Ruth Logan Herne’s Stafford brothers throughout the Double S Ranch series, Peace in the Valley offers a satisfying conclusion to the series. And if you haven’t been following, you won’t be lost if you pick up the newest release.

While Trey Walker Stafford and Lucy Carlton’s lives appear at opposite ends of the spectrum when they first meet, the reader (and the characters) soon discover they have much more in common. They are both search for love and acceptance. Trey’s career in Nashville has given him fame, notoriety, and money but he feels something is missing. Lucy’s life has been filled with one disappointment followed by another and she’s struggling to provide for her family.

And speaking of family, Lucy’s kids are adorable. I loved that the author included kids in all of the books in this series. Family is a huge thread that weaves through each of these books.

As a read who currently lives in Nashville (and no, I’m not trying to make it in the music scene) but once lived close to the central Washington setting of the Stafford ranch, I appreciated the juxtaposition of the two areas. Both have their own draw and beauty but there is something majestic about the Washington state fields and mountains.

Trey struggles with fears in his sacrifice, Lucy wrestles with trusting in a future that’s too good to be true, and two of Lucy’s brood struggle with their own issues. But it’s family who gives us the courage to press on despite the uphill battle, and Ruth Logan Herne is one of the best out there when it comes to drawing the reader into the family fold.

Lucy Carlton barely makes ends meet; raising three young children and one teen sister-in-law, is a feat in and of itself, much less doing it on her own. When she and a famous local literally collide in the middle of a busy intersection, her livelihood as well as her vehicle sustain noticeable damage. Surprisingly, country music star Trey Walker Stafford offers to make amends. With his kind spirit, million dollar smile, and easy way with her children, Lucy cannot afford to make a mistake.

Trey Stafford has come home; his reasons very personal, nevertheless it becomes his mission to make sure that the lovely widow living on the ranch next door doesn't suffer from his poor driving skills or their families' rocky history. Unknowingly, Lucy Carlton finds a way to touch places deep inside Trey's heart that have lain dormant for years. What would it be like to have "peace in this valley" again?

Ruth Logan Herne's entire "Double S Ranch" series has been outstanding and this third and final trip to the ranch is every bit as satisfying as her readers have come to expect.

This conclusion of the Double S Ranch series tugs the heartstrings and leaves readers with a warm and fuzzy feeling of satisfaction!

With his strong faith and dedication to the straight and narrow, Trey Stafford appears to have it all together. His personality is a great blend of hardworking cowboy and sweet country crooner.

When it comes to being pushed around by men, no-nonsense, hardworking single mama Lucy Carlton is done! She is determined to stand on her own two feet and provide for her children with no one but the Good Lord to help.

Herne has a knack for authentic characters and heartfelt storytelling and Peace in the Valley is no exception. This is another excellent book for my all time favorites list!

I requested the opportunity to read this book through the publisher. The opinions expressed are my own.

Peace in the Valley is an absolutely spellbinding novel of grace, forgiveness and trust. Although this latest release is the third installment in Ruth Logan Herne's divine Double S Ranch series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

Trey Walker Stafford can never repay his uncle and adoptive father Sam Stafford for providing him with a loving home following his parents' deaths from a drug overdose when he was three years old. Despite his love and respect for Sam, he could not give up his dream of becoming a musician and he now makes his home in TN. In spite of their past differences, Trey is more than willing to put his life and career on hold after discovering he is the closest match for Sam's much needed liver transplant. Although there are risks involved with the live donor procedure, Trey knows the operation is his father's best chance at survival. He also cannot turn down Sam's request to help him make amends for the damage he caused on their neighbor Lucy Carlton's farm. Trey is quite charmed by Lucy and her four children, but will learning the secrets from Lucy's long ago past destroy their chance at happiness?

Through all of life's tragedies and successes, Trey's faith has remained constant. After the very public loss of his wife years earlier, he ignored the negative publicity and gossip surrounding him and worked hard to keep his career on track. However, the circumstances of her death shook Trey's confidence that people can truly leave their pasts behind and he remains very wary and cautious about whom he trusts.

Lucy is devoted to her children and she works hard to make ends meet while also finding time to give back to those in need. She has made a few missteps in her life but she learned from her mistakes and has no intention of repeating them. Although Lucy has made peace with her past, she is quite guarded and very careful about who she trusts. She speaks honestly and openly about checkered past and she is the always willing to give people a second chance.

Trey and Lucy both share a deep faith, but their pasts make it very difficult for them trust one another. Trey is initially open to a relationship with Lucy, but he is reluctant to make promises he might not be able to keep. Once he becomes aware of Lucy's history, Trey tries to distance himself from his growing feelings for her. Lucy's experiences with her deceased husband naturally make her wary about becoming involved with another musician. She is also worried the unsubstantiated rumors about Trey might be true. Lucy is fiercely protective of her independence and she is quick to think the worst of Trey when he ineptly expresses some concern about an offer she is considering. Will Trey and Lucy's respective baggage prevent them from risking their hearts?

With no shortage of valuable life lessons, Peace in the Valley is an emotionally compelling Christian romance that old and new fans of the Double S Ranch series are going to love. Trey and Lucy are vibrantly developed with imperfections, strengths and weaknesses that are very easy to relate to. Lucy and Trey's unexpected friendship provides a firm foundation for their slow-growing romance. Ruth Logan Herne beautifully incorporates relevant scripture into the storyline in a realistic manner that will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to let go of past hurts and mistakes in order to find peace, lasting happiness and ultimately, love.

This was such amazing book and I was truly sad when I turned the final page. Have absolutely adored the Double S Ranch series and I am sad that they are finished. These books are filled with love, faith, family, forgiveness, and cowboys.

I loved the story of Trey and Lucy. Trey seemed to be the brother with it all together and the one full of faith but he had just as many issues as the others. It’s so easy to think that famous people with a bunch of money have it all together, but that isn’t always the case. It was wonderful to read about this down to earth guy who was still trying to come to terms with the drug addicts who shaped his life.

The relationship between Trey and Cade was completely heartwarming. He was able to relate to these kids who were growing up without a parent because he was unfortunately in the same predicament. His love, respect, and gratitude towards Sam swooping in and saving his life, reminded him of what it’s like for a kid to have a strong man take him in to raise and love him.

This is a book and series I will read many times and I have no doubt I will treasure it each and every time.

Warm, heartfelt, and tear jerking, Peace in the Valley is perfect for someone who is looking for a story about faith, family, and putting the past behind you. I had tears in my eyes so many times at the truly meaningful moments that happened throughout the book. This is a great book for someone who really appreciates what is really important in life. Growth happened in so many areas. Children, teenagers, mothers, siblings, fathers, and everyone in between learned something on this journey. It was the simple and beautiful statements of faith given by the children that especially made me tear up. It also made me want to never ever bother a famous person in public who is just trying to live their life and needn’t be bothered by some random person. I did wish that in the end there were more details about how all of their lives played out in the future and a duet between Trey and Lucy. But the simplistic values and goals were more important anyway, so the ending was magical and satisfying without needing too many frills. I have very much enjoyed every part of the journey at the Double S Ranch. I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review.

Loved Trey's story. I don't know anything about living donor organ donation, the music business, or being a recovering drug addict but everything made sense. I want to visit the Double S and meet the Stafford family, the woman and children they love, Murt, and Hobbs. My only complaint was that the book was too short - I wanted to keep reading about Sam, Colt, Nick, and Trey and their families (or future families). Sad that this is the last book in the series!

I love this book! Superb book on so many levels! It is a satisfyingly romantic cowboy love story but so much more! The author paints a beautiful picture of a family turning to God for healing of past wounds. The characters seem so real you forget you're reading a book. You become immersed in their struggles. I enjoyed the times in the book when each character would think back to a scripture that helped give them strength or encouragement for the moment. The relationships and backstories of Trey and his brothers and father was unique and inspirational. The way Lucy and Trey interact with each other and her children is heartwarming. The interactions and conversations between side characters add richness and depth to the main plot. This is a fascinating story with a lot of thought-provoking messages woven into an excellent story about God's grace, forgiving others and embracing love through the courage God gives us through second chances.

"For once in his lifetime, Trey Walker Stafford had aced his two older brothers." (1)

I finally had the chance to read Trey's story in Ruth Logan Herne's latest book in Double S Ranch series, Peace in the Valley. Ever since the first book in the series, Back in the Saddle, I was hooked. Hooked on getting to know the Stafford boys. Each in their own way, their walk in faith and in forgiveness have opened floodgates of emotions, laughter and comprehension. And in Peace in the Valley, the story on Trey's journey to self understanding, grace and love, just simply perfect.

"I'm just saying there's good in all of us. Sometimes we just have to look harder. Or be really patient. . ." (118)

Trey doesn't know his heart - doesn't believe that he and others can leave a broken past behind. As he struggles with issues of trust, he can't decide on what sacrifice meant for his family, and what that sacrifice can do to others. Without promising what he can't be sure of, he is hesitant with his growing love for Lucy and her kids.

". . . it is useless to take on senseless guilt. We are much stronger when we graciously accepts God's forgiveness, and forgive ourselves." (58)

The humor of the author is evident throughout, with the adults, as well as the kids. I just love the mutual respect the Stafford men show for each other and others as well. Their love is obvious, but it doesn't stop there. They're not afraid to speak the truth, nor find ways to share God's grace, and I think it has a lot to do with the women in their lives.

"The boys think you're pretty cool. Of course, they don't know the rest of us well, yet, so comparisons will prove inevitable, and that will leave you in the dust." (180)

Kids continue to make a strong presence in this third installment, which by the way, can each read as a standalone novel. I love the fact that the author throws in good, moral, and honest parenting topics in the story as well. Parents will be able to relate and those that aren't parents, will still find it charming. The part about being a "true cowboy", priceless. I can go on and on, with so many great plot moments and quotable quotes, but unfortunately, like every story, there comes a time for it to end. Last tidbit, I love the use of the title, Peace in the Valley, which for those that don't know, is also a title of a song, written by Thomas Andrew Dorsey, and sung by various artists, including Johnny Cash. With multiple scriptural references, the theme of peace is exactly what we can expect from the cover and the story.

"We're all here at this time for a reason. God's reason. I don't know the whys or the wherefores, but I believe it. . ." (200)

I really loved Peace in the Valley. The characters, the story, the messages - all makes it a worth whiled read, and a keeper for future reads. I also highly recommend to those that would love to see good in everything and everyone, but having a tad bit trouble with it. Or those that find it difficult to hold onto grace, have trouble with forgiveness, either for others or with themselves, or simply in search of personal peace. Either way, let's not forget the choice is ours. Ours to trust, to make decisions and to share. The Double S Ranch series have a subtle way of reminding us all that, but also literal. Let it enter your mind and hearts.

"The tree has no choice; it grows as it's shaped. But God gives us all kinds of choices. Once we're old enough to see that, it's up to us. But it also becomes our responsibility, and that's the scary part. Because then there's no one else to blame. " (77)

"You either go into this believing God's in control or you go in shaking in your boots. I'm grabbing hold of the whole God-thing. At least that way, we minimize wear and tear on the boots. Good boots don't come cheap. " (184)

Good boots don't come cheap. O yeah.

I have so enjoyed Double S Ranch throughout this series. It is a great setting. Peace in the Valley, while good, is probably my least favorite. It was a bit more difficult to get into the storyline and characters. I think the secondary characters were pretty solid. The ending tied things up nicely as well. I know Ruth Logan Herne doesn't shy away from difficult situations and real life problems which is what makes her books good.

And I thought the 3rd Double S Ranch book couldn't possibly be as good as the 1st two. I was SO wrong. Trey's story is captivating to the point where I couldn't stop reading once I had started. Trey seems like the guy who has it all; fame fortune and faith. But deep down he carries pain from his past that tends to rear its ugly head at unexpected moments. It might even keep him from ever finding love again.
Lucy, single mom of 3 kids and guardian of an errant teen, plods through life on the hard and narrow road because no other way is available to her. But through her hardships and trials she has a beautiful family and a deep bond with her children. Her hopes and dreams may never come to fruition, but could it be that she is really the one who has it all?
When Trey and Lucy "accidentally" cross paths, a reluctant friendship is born as each sees many of the things they want in the life of the other. As the pair grows closer, will they open their hearts to love, or will fear of the future turning into the past blind them to what may just be God's perfect plan?
Ruth Logan Herne has woven a masterful tale in Peace in the Valley, whether you read it stand- alone or as the wonderful ending to a beautifully written trilogy. Lose yourself in the gorgeous background of the Double S Ranch and surrender your heart to the Stafford cowboys as they seek love and acceptance, while discovering freedom from the mistakes of past.
I recommend these books to absolutely anyone who loves cowboy romance. If it's your first Ruth Logan Herne book, you are in for a treat. If you've read everything this author has ever written, you are still in for a treat. Romantic, touching, full of sentiment, faith and emotion that will bring you to tears.

He yearned for hope and longed for peace, and that was ridiculous because God had given him a talent that reaped him riches beyond belief.....And yet, the craving continued unabated..... (pg 19)

Nashville's country music superstar Trey Walker Stafford has one-upped his two older brothers! He's come home long enough to donate part of his liver to save his father Sam Stafford in a risky operation. And maybe to find that peace in the valley he sings so much about. Until he meets single mom Lucy Carlton and her two feisty, rough and tumble but lovable boys, one sweet little girl and one broody, skate-the-line teenage sister-in-law. Now if that ain't a whole passel of trouble, I don't know what is! Trey's got a heart of gold though, big enough to swallow the mountains and resilient enough to embrace what life throws at him.

Ruth makes Trey bigger than life in this readers mind. I've been wanting to meet him since the glimpses she's given us in the first two books in this family saga series. Still riddled with guilt concerning his late wife, he's even more determined to tow the line and prove he can have it all without losing it all to drugs or alcohol or other avenues so many stars succumb to. Coming home is his chance to wind down, take a breath and smell the fresh county air to revive not only his heart, but soul. Lucy is just as determined to live life the way she wants to, never again wanting to kowtow to anothers will or whim. Having been burnt in love & life with her own past mistakes, she has her kids to keep her grounded. Tough, feisty, with a good head on her shoulders, she's a force to be reckoned with. I love the banter between these two, the author shines the light on her own sense of humor through them. More than once I found myself chuckling! This is a story that will totally immerse you within it's pages and make you feel every emotion possible to man (or woman). I loved the sage advice and Godly wisdom that Isabo doles out in great proportions; always knowing what to say and when. All the characters made me feel like I was part of this family; loud, boisterous, loved, a crazy mix of so many differing personalities. Watching the romance play out between Trey & Lucy was a delightful mix of push/pull and stubborn pride! But it makes it the sweeter when they finally see what's right in front of them; the slow burn of love forged in mutual pain, understanding and surrender to both God and their hearts. And lastly, the strong faith played out beautifully, proving that while life is messy, God can make something beautiful out of anything if we but have willing hearts!

A poignant, deep, many layered, family saga series that will engulf you heart and soul, lingering well after the last bittersweet page!

There`s something so heart-stoppingly delicious about a man who is "strong enough to be gentle." (p. 221) And let me tell you, Trey is the poster boy for strong and gentle. Oh my, I think I need to stick my head in the freezer for a sec. I'll be right back. Phew. Better. Now, where was I? Oh yes, hero Trey....oh mercy, just thinking about him has me revving into hyperventilating mode. Trey is so...perfectly imperfect! He loves the Lord and his compassion knows no bounds and he's sneaky about the way he blesses Lucy with gestures both big and small.

Poor Lucy doesn't know what to make of Trey. Well, actually she does -- she doesn't trust any of the Stafford men and would just as soon pretend they didn't exist. But Trey is so charmingly persistent. Great with her kids, as talented with a hammer as he is with a guitar. It's hard to keep him at arm's length and honestly Lucy should be given an award for stubbornness because she kept her distance way longer than I thought was humanly possible! Trey is that irresistible.

But he can be hard on himself and others. Has some preconceived ideas that don't quite mesh with what he knows about grace. He battles some deep internal struggles before he finds it possible to lay those demons down and accept the peace so freely offered. Love the moving faith threads intrinsically intertwined into every fibre of this exceptional story.

And for fans of the series, Herne provides plenty of closure for the entire Stafford clan. All three books are wrapped up beautifully in this stunning conclusion to the Double S Ranch series.

My thanks to the author for gifting me with a copy of this book.

Unwanted and then orphaned at 3, Trey Walker was taken in by his uncle, Sam, a powerful rich rancher, who rolled over anything or anyone in his way.

One of those people was Lucy, teenage substance abuser and mother, who married young and was widowed early.

Now, Sam is sick and needs a liver transplant and Trey is the best match. Trey has left Sam's ranch to prove he can succeed in a music career, married a former drug addict, and lost her to a relapse.

As Sam sees his time growing short, he wants to make amends, but is physically unable to do so. Instead, he asks Trey to help out their struggling neighbor. Lucy is now the financially struggling mother of three young kids. She has also taken in her 14 year old former sister in law to help her get on the straight and narrow.

Trey doesn't mind helping Lucy, especially since he narrowly avoids hitting her van when he runs a stop sign. Unfortunately, Lucy's van flips and is ruined. For her, it's another strike against the Staffords.

As Trey helps Lucy get what she needs to spruce up her business and home, he also helps mold the children. It's not long before both of them are spending way too much time thinking about the other.

This is a good story about forgiveness, making amends, selflessness, and overcoming having your buttons pushed. Both Trey and Lucy have scars that the other pushes accidentally. While they are initially hurt and mad, they cool off and take time to really evaluate what the other may have been thinking based on what they know about the other person.

Through communication, trust, prayer, and faith in God, everyone has there happy ending.

Trey owes his life to Sam Stafford. His uncle rescued him from filth and neglect when he was just a toddler. Then Sam adopted him. So the while the man he calls his father may not be the nicest person, Trey feels obligated to come back and help when his father is ill. Trey is the only one that didn't appear to lose his faith, even when his wife died. He's a well known and popular musician who doesn't seem to have let it go to his head. But when he shows back he makes a horribly bad first impression on Lucy, his neighbor, by crashing into her van. Now he must prove to her that all musicians are bad.

Loved this book. I've been waiting for the third book in the series to come out and am now sad that I've read the last of this family. While I think the book would work well as a stand-alone, I've read the other two so would highly recommend starting with them to get the full story. I loved how the author used broken characters and showed how God can use them for good. She made each character stand out in a unique way so I didn't get lost, despite the numerous people that came into play. The subtle yet strong elements f faith that were woven into the story were inspiring. The romance was sweet, clean and heartwarming. Loved this series and can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

Well, this book was just fabulous! I have enjoyed the entire Double S Ranch series and Peace in the Valley is by far my very favorite of the three novels. This story had such heart and I loved the two main characters, Trey and Lucy. I loved their interactions and the attraction that was there between them. The kids in the story reacted realistically to situations given their various dispositions and added to the story nicely.

I recommend reading the entire series, because the reader will be able to see the various Stafford men meet and fall in love with the women who will change their lives for the better. However, I do think a reader could pick up Peace in the Valley and understand the story within its pages even if they haven’t read the first two books.

I was sad to see this book end, but it felt like the perfect conclusion to this series that I have enjoyed so much! Peace in the Valley will be a book that I read again.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

"Two years before, Sam Stafford had dreamed the impossible dream. To have his family reunited, here, in the lush Kittitas Valley of Washington, snugged between the rising forms of the Cascade Range. He knew it wouldn't happen. He knew it couldn't happen. He'd done to much damage in his time, and there no quick fixed in sight. Then he got sick. Illness threatened his time fame and his life and for months, he couldn't imagine how he could bring his dream about. How he could fix things just so. Make things right. Now he realized he didn't have to. God fixed things. God offered chances and choices, and this time Sam chose wisely, even when he didn't much like the offerings."

As head patriarch of the Double S Ranch, Sam has made more than a few mistakes along the way to being the successful rancher that he is. Now that two of his sons have found their way back home and begun to set up their own homes on the property with weddings in the near future, Sam believes that he has little time left to right a few of those wrongs and one of them is giving back to his neighbor Lucy Carlton, a single mother raising three young kids while her ranch, home and barn are falling into disrepair. It gets even worse, when his youngest son, Trey gets into an accident running a stop sign and totaling not only Lucy's van but her home based flower business as well. Perhaps this is just the window of opportunity Sam's been praying for. Now that Trey has come home as a liver recipient for Sam's operation, he is putting his country music career on hold for now, praying that the operation is a success and allows them both a chance at a new life.

Trey isn't looking for love when he takes up his father's plea to help Lucy will fixing up the land and ranch he had sought to buy before they did, and now feels it is only right to help in any way he can. Trey on the other hand realizes that he has to tread carefully around Lucy as she is more than cautious about letting anyone seeing her as a charity case, even when it will help not only herself but her kids as well. Now that she is also allowing her former husband's sister to stay with her, Ashley at 14, will test the very limits of her patience as not only a rebellious teen but someone who needs guidance, second chances and most importantly love that lasts and is true. Can Lucy and Trey find peace in the valley or will they allow their own stubborn pride to stand in the way of true and lasting happiness?

I received Peace in the Valley by Ruth Logan Herne compliments of Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers. This is the third novel in the Double Ranch Series, and I have to say I have a special place in my heart for those true cowboys whose genteel manners and kindness like Trey's makes my heart melt, I mean, "He wanted to make her smile, See her relax and laugh. Give her the gift of time, ease her work burden." who wouldn't want a man like that in her own life. Perhaps the best theme of this novel is the simple quote Lucy keeps in kitchen, "What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you took time to thank God for today?" This is such a heartwarming story of healing, lasting love, forgiveness and second chances and blessings that come in disguise as a single mother, and a charming cowboy who loves to tip his hat to her! Not only do you get romance, but also some mouth watering recipes at the end. A win-win for me and well deserving of all 5 out of 5 stars. I am just praying that this isn't the end to the series! I just not ready for it to end yet.

Peace in the Valley
Double S Ranch #3
By Ruth Logan Herne

Trey Walker Stafford is coming home to the Double S Ranch, hoping to repair Sam Stafford for rescuing him after his parents' death. Trey's the best match for providing Sam with the liver donation he needs to live and he has to do this for Sam even if the potential risks have him scared as to the outcome.

Unfortunately, Trey's return home is less than peaceful when he's involved in an incident that results in his neighbor's car being damaged. Lucy Carlton has yet another grievance to add to her list of wrongs the Stafford's have committed. But when Trey makes good on his promise to repair the damage he's caused no one is more surprised than Lucy. But she's suspicious of just what Trey's intentions are. Is she a charity case that he can chalk up on his good deeds list or is his concern genuine? Lucy and her kids are about to find out just who Trey is and Lucy is prepared for yet another disappointment in her life.

Peace in the Valley is the third book in the Double S Ranch series that focuses on the Stafford family and Gray's Glen. This series follows family patriarch Sam Stafford and his change of heart. His life was spent trying to make the Double S Ranch a name to be reckoned with at the cost of his sons, his marriages, and the neighbors around him. Now with his health in a marked decline, Sam is trying to repair the years of damage he has done. Each book in the series focuses on a different son and this book focuses on his third son Trey, who isn't his son by birth but rather his adopted nephew.

This is a book that focuses on family, faith and the power of redemption. Peace in the Valley is Trey's search for peace in his life - the peace he knows is possible but which has escaped him due to the losses he has experienced. And this is a story of second chances and that everyone deserves this chance.

Readers who haven't read the first two books in this series can easily read and follow this story and later go back to read the previous books. For those who are interested in genre placement, this is a contemporary Christian romance fiction. This would be a good vacation read to take with you.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher through Blogging for Books with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:

In spite of their differences, Trey Walker Stafford knows he owes his life to cowboy and legendary rancher Sam Stafford--the uncle who rescued him after his parents' death. Trey had left the Double S Ranch to pursue music against Sam's wishes, but returns to central Washington when he learns he's the best match for a procedure that could save Sam's life. Although Trey's found country music fame and success, he's also endured the tragic loss of his wife. He croons about love, but struggles with a yawning emptiness he can't explain.

Overwhelmed by a growing list of challenges, but mistrustful of Stafford men, single mother Lucy Carlton reluctantly accepts Trey's help to revive her crumbling farm when Sam instructs him to repay the overdue debt to her family.

As the two grow closer, Trey slowly begins to open his heart to this beautiful woman and strives to let go of the grief he's held for years. Lucy has a complicated history of her own. Can Trey accept her as she is, learn to forgive the past, and find the elusive peace he's sought for so long?

My Review:

in book 3 of the Double S Ranch series, we find ourselves following Trey and his journey. Trey is convinced that there is a medical procedure that he can take part in that will save his uncle's life. He is more than a little determined to help his father out any way he can and he is hoping he is the best match for this transplant. He owes it to Sam because Sam took over caring for him after his parents passing.

One thing that Sam wants Trey to take care of for him is Lucy Carlton's farm. Through many twists and turns Trey and Lucy's paths cross more than once. And what was once a wall seems to be silently falling away. Trey and Lucy both have pasts that they seem to cling to and drown themselves in but fate has stepped in and there's no looking back now. Love seems to be on the horizon for the two of them. But will Trey survive this surgery long enough for either of them to see where this leads?

Peace in the Valley is a beautiful story that captured me from the beginning. This is my favorite in the Double S Ranch series by Ruth Logan Herne. Trey Walker Stafford is trying to find peace, hope, faith, and love despite having a successful music career after leaving the Double S Ranch, where he had grown up after being adopted by his uncle, Sam Stafford. Lucy Carlton resides near the ranch with her 3 young children and teenage sister-in-law. Lucy and Trey met following an accident that resulted in Trey taking on the responsibility of seeing to Lucy’s immediate needs. There are many unexpected twists and turns between the characters which are well developed with true to life issues. The residents of Double S Ranch are all watching the interaction or Trey and Lucy, while Trey is working at Lucy’s place to help improve her home, buildings and flower business that needed attention. Lucy and Trey had a quiet understanding of each other, since they both had grown up with unpleasant experiences and parents who focused on their addictions more than their children. Will Trey survive the operation to save Sam Stafford’s life? Who’s going to find a new purpose in life even when a musical career opportunity was provided? Grab a copy of this remarkable story showing how lives can be connected with second chances, deep peace, love, faith, hope and grace from God. Ruth Logan Herne never fails to deliver astonishing stories filled with realistic family situations, charming children and the interweaving of scripture references that are perfect for each trial individuals might face in life. As well as scriptural references to give peace, hope, faith and love during difficult times.

I received a complimentary copy of Peace in the Valley from the author and publisher. I was not required to write a positive review but have expressed my honest opinion. Peace in the Valley is a must be read book. I would recommend reading the entire Double S Ranch series, even though each book could be read as a standalone.

Welcome to Book 3, and the final book, in the Double S Ranch series. It’s nice to meet up with the Stafford clan again.

This adventure centers on the third, and youngest, son, Trey. Trey is actually a cousin to brothers Colt and Nick. His uncle/now father Sam adopted Trey after his parents overdosed and died in California when he was three years old. He remembers a bit about that life but is grateful that Sam rescued him.

Trey is a country mega-star. He seems to have it all, but that’s just on the outside. He still suffers from growing up without a mother’s love. He is still trying to prove that he was right to pursue his music dream, no matter how much Sam disapproved. And he is still reeling from the death of his wife, Cathy, also from drugs.

Now Sam is sick; he needs a liver transplant. Ironically the one person who is not a full-blood relative is the best match. Trey doesn’t hesitate to donate part of his liver to Sam. It’s a painful and dangerous operation, but Trey knows that it’s the right thing to do.

On his way back home to Gray Glen, Washington, and the Double S Ranch, Trey has a little fender-bender with the single mom on the neighboring farm. Things have never been easy between Sam and Lucy Carlton, but that’s about to change.

Sam is trying to make up for his past and the way he treated the other residents in the valley. Back then, he didn’t care who walked over to get what he wanted…and he did. Often.

While waiting to hear from a San Francisco hospital for the go-ahead with the surgery, Sam sends Trey over to Lucy’s farm to help. The place is falling apart and it’s up to Trey to make it whole again.

The plot is predictable from there on, but I knew what I was getting into when I selected this book to read. It does go on a too long, with the same basic scene being repeated over and over. There are a lot more Bible verses in this episode than the first two. I felt as if Herne was trying to get those in than crafting the story. Still, it’s a fun read with a happy ending, so Peace in the Valley receives 4 out of 5 stars in Julie’s world.

I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for this review.
