Note to self with major spoilers:

Heroine has a miscarriage, and finds out she can’t have biological kids. She breaks up with hero bc she knows he wants kids, but doesn’t tell him why.

Hero, who supposedly loved the heroine, immediately runs off and becomes engaged to OW.

OW leaves him right before the wedding, but oops, he unknowingly got her pregnant and she leaves the baby with the heroine. OW chooses the heroine because she knows that the hero has always loved the heroine. Which is where this book begins. 🤢🤢🤢🤢

No surprise, and heroine stays celibate for the time she’s separated from the hero.

What the fuck is this bullshit? I expect much better from this author, this story is disgusting.

I was shaking my head no, too much. Character motivations did not interest me.

I felt like I was reading about high school girls keeping secrets for silly reasons and then having all kinds of drama and stress because someone might discover the secret.

Katie was “secretly” dating Dean, became pregnant, had a miscarriage, and learned she would not be able to carry a pregnancy in the future. She “assumes” that Dean will want his own biological children, so she breaks up with him and does not tell him why - another “secret.”

Later, a mother abandons her baby girl, giving the baby to Katie with a legal document. Katie does not know who the mother is (a secret). Katie wants to keep the baby, but insists on keeping this secret from her brother and her dad. Her reason is “If Jack finds out about the baby, my dad will get involved. My dad thinks I’m irresponsible. I don’t want to confirm that to him. I don’t want to disappoint him.” Well, she’s being responsible. That didn’t make sense. She also fears her father would do stupid things and get the press involved. That didn’t fit.

Katie wants to keep the baby “secret” from Dean for a couple reasons. 1. Dean might think Katie is bad by keeping the baby away from the birth mother. 2. If Dean were in her life, and the mother showed up to take the baby away, Dean might abandon Katie. Uhhhh.... what?

There are more secrets. I just did not enjoy them. Secrets can make a good story, but I want them reasonable, rational, believable.

On the positive side: The subject matter might appeal to some - an abandoned baby given to an infertile woman who loves the baby and is a wonderful mother. And there’s a happy romantic ending.

Good romance. I liked the characters and the story. Didn’t bowl me over, but I liked it.
Our heroine has run into her ex at her brother’s wedding. Tough enough, but then she finds a baby on her doorstep that night.
Meanwhile our hero is still in love with her. After seeing her at the wedding he wants to find a way back into her life.
This might prove difficult because he got over their breakup by proposing to another girl. The girl called off the wedding because she knew he was still in love with the ex.
Confused yet? Well lets throw in a newborn baby and the search for her mother.

★★★★☆ (This is a review of the audiobook.) This is the second time I’ve heard Amy McFadden narrate, and she does a nice job here. She has some nice inflections, as well as her differentiation. I wasn’t wild over Dean Prescott’s Texas accent, but I wasn’t put off by it, either. There is something uplifting about her voice. Like the first two, I hope she finishes off the series.

I don't know why I like this series so much. I guess the word I think of is “pleasant,” when I think of it. Again, nothing new here, but I really enjoyed it. Not as fast-paced as the first in the series, but it had a nice flow. Made me smile a few times, as well as frown. I wasn't as attached to the heroine, Katie Morrison, as I was to Jessie in the first book. She didn’t do everything the way I would. Still, Ms. Bybee’s characters can’t all be carbon copies, or I would get bored. It was very pleasant to listen to while I set-up my June challenges on GRs.

Oh, where do I start? While I loved Jack & Jessie in book 1, Dean (oh Dean.. yum) and Katie really touched my hearts in book 2. It could have been the construction site scenes with Katie running around in high heels and stealing Dean's hard hat ( I don't know about you but when I'm picturing construction scenes- the guys are all super buff and most likely shirtless.. lol) or maybe the baby dropped on Katie's doorstep. As an adoptive mom, I remember those fears and worries that Katie had as she struggled with not falling in love immediately with this precious newborn that she wasn't sure she could keep. Oh the emotions.

Not Quite Mine flows so smoothly that it doesn't feel like a sequel. So many times after reading a good book, you wonder if the next one will be just as good. No, it's even better! We still get the needed sampling of Jack & Jessie -which I love seeing bits of their happily ever after! Second chance love between Dean & Katie, throwing a baby into the mix and Katie's sudden turn into 'adulthood' is a combination you just can't miss. I could go on and on about all that I loved in this book but instead I'm just going to tell you to go buy it! Now! Quick! Get them both and get caught up so you'll be ready when Not Quite Enough comes out in October!!

4 Oh baby stars!!

Imagine being told you can never have children straight after you suffer a bad miscarriage, you then let the man you love go knowing you can never give him what he wants. Then a few years later you open the door to find a newborn baby with all the legal paperwork stating the biological mum gave her to you.

That's what happened to Katie, there is so much more to the story that Katie has to figure out. Although for me it was obvious where the story was going from the letter that was left with the baby.

I'm really enjoying this series, looking forward to Monicas story next.

Katie is the wild child who loves spending time with her friends at a club, wearing short skirts and tight tops just because she knows it annoys her dad, and because she likes it. She’s finally starting to take a few things seriously, one of them being decorating her brother’s new hotel that’s in the process of being built by her brother’s best friend Dean and his construction company. She and Dean have a painful past and being in close proximity to each other is bringing up a lot of old feelings and many unresolved issues.

At her brother’s wedding, a baby is left outside of Katie’s room with a note indicating that the person who left the baby knows all about Katie and wants her to take care of 2-week old Savannah. Katie can’t have kids of her own and with one look at Savannah, she’s sunk. She hires a private investigator to find out who the mother is so she can confront her about leaving her baby and in the meantime, she wants to keep Savannah as much of a secret as she can. She isn’t able to hide her for long though as eventually Dean finds out and wants to be a part of both Katie and Savannah’s lives.

I loved having the history between Katie and Dean set the stage for them. They dated in secret and when Katie got pregnant and miscarried, their relationship fell apart. They didn’t talk about their feelings, just letting the relationship crumble without fighting for it and a crushed Dean proposed to another woman just a short time later. His fiancé called the engagement off and now Dean isn’t going to let Katie get away again. Dean is just a sweet, nice guy – a trend I’m noticing with Bybee’s heroes and I approve! He’s easy to love, he’s fun to read about and he really never stopped loving Katie. Their romance is very enjoyable, sexy and they’re such a fun couple to root for.

The addition of little Savannah was enjoyable as well; especially with how her presence really sets off a change in Katie. She starts to act and be more mature, thinking like a mom and an adult instead of a party girl. Katie bonds instantly with Savannah, thinking of herself as a mom and at the same time, being so worried about what the private investigator is going to find.

It’s fairly clear early on to see where the Savannah storyline is headed and one thing that didn’t so much work for me is when the birth mother is finally found and confronted, her reasons for leaving Savannah with Katie seemed very weak. I didn’t believe for a second that she would just up and leave her baby with Katie because she could give her a loving family, especially with the birth mother’s connection to Katie. I don’t know, it was a small part of the story that overall didn’t work for me.

There’s more mama drama, this time with Katie’s absent mother and dealing with her reentrance in her life. I didn’t feel like enough time was devoted to Katie and her mom’s situation for me to really care. I did like seeing her, her brother Jack and their dad have some good family scenes. Also, a thread that felt like it got dropped was the hotel that is so heavily present early on with both Dean and Katie working to bring it to life. I found myself curious about it and the work they were doing on it (I know, I know, it’s just a hotel, but it gets some major page time early on!) and that aspect was nonexistent at the end.

Even with a few little issues, Not Quite Mine is a solid contemporary romance that has a nice sweetness to it. I’ve been in the mood lately for fun, lighthearted, romantic reads, and this one fit the bill.

Bilemedim 🙈

**Audiobook Review** This is the second book in the series by Ms. Bybee. For me it was just okay and did not bring the punch that I expected. I thought the first book was very enjoyable. The main characters were just so so and although there were some twists involved, I didn't think it made a big dent and was very predictable. However, the narration by Ms. MacFadden was still on point and nice. Thus, my rating that I am giving this story. Hoping"Not Quite #3) puts it back on track.

4 stars!

Not Quite Mine is book 2 in Catherine Bybee’s “Not Quite” series, which began with Not Quite Dating. The setting of Not Quite Mine’s opening chapter is Jack and Jessie’s wedding, and it involves many of the characters that we met in book 1. Although this book can be read as a stand alone, it is heavily linked to certain events that transpired in Not Quite Dating so I would suggest reading them in order.

With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, this book’s release is timely. Not Quite Mine explores the beauty, sacrifice, and devotion of motherhood. It pricked my heart several times, and was a strong reminder that motherhood is not limited by bloodline.

Katelyn is a wealthy and spoiled hotel heiress who has lived a life of privilege. When baby Savannah is left on Katie’s doorstep accompanied with a heartfelt note from the birth mother relinquishing her rights, Katie’s life is forever changed. Katie immediately hires a PI to investigate the identity of Savannah’s birth mother. Although she is terrified that Savannah’s birth mother will change her mind and come back for the baby, she can’t help falling irrevocably in love with the tiny baby and with motherhood. One of the best parts of this book is witnessing the transformation of Katie from a self-centered socialite to a devoted and loving mother.

Not Quite Mine is also a “second chance at love” story. Dean and Katie share a past relationship that was filled with passion, pain, and heartbreak. Their relationship ended following a devastating miscarriage and the discovery that Katie may never be able to successfully carry a baby to term. I loved watching this couple get another chance at a life together and the making of a family.

This book contains a little bit of everything: humor, grief, hope, but mostly love. It poignantly showcases the love of a parent, the love between a man and a woman, and the love between friends. I believed in Dean and Katie, and watching this couple and Savannah become a family was pure joy.

I highly recommend this book (and for that matter, this entire series!)

Thank you to Catherine Bybee for providing Swept Away by Romance with a copy of this book for review!

I thought this had potential. I was wrong.

The only one I ended up liking was Maggie. She had integrity and strength for what she did. Even with her broken heart. Maggie however is not the heroine.

Dean was mediocre, the more I read the more he irritated me. He was weak. The heroine pushed him away (for foolish but selfless reason) and he didn't bother looking too closely at her actions, instead chose to go off in a huff and straight to OW who he was all set to marry but this OW had self worth, strength and integrity and called off the wedding at the last minute, otherwise weak Dean was all set to marry her. He'd made a point of telling everyone OW was "perfect". He was very upset when OW dumped him and only realised weeks/months after he was practically left at the altar that he didn't really love OW after all. Took him long enough to figure that out!!!

Meanwhile the heroine, Katie, for that same 1.5 years was celibate. Because she knew no OM could be a substitute for Dean. Of course. Eye roll. Clearly Dean did NOT have that problem and quite enjoyed his sexy times with Maggie. Katie who I thought would have a backbone and started out liking ended up unlikable and spineless. I especially didn't like her uncharitable thoughts on Maggie and any of her thoughts in the last few pages of this story actually.

And Dean, well I can't stand wishy washy hero's. He got on my nerves. He'd always wanted Katy from when they were in high school but was best friends with her brother (eye roll) so he chose to be a player and chase and sleeparound with other girls rather than try a relationship with Katy. The only plus is that Katy didn't stay "frozen pining for this weak shit" but also played around. It took him years to grow a pair and make a move on Katie, then when Katie broke up with him immediately moved on from her to get engaged to OW then when OW dumped him he went back to Katie, never had to try too hard. A few words of "we should give us another try" and Katie caved.

The whole baby storyline just irritated me.

Like the first book in the series, the story here contains few surprises once you accept the premise. This is actually a better recommendation than it appears on the surface because it means that Katie and her accomplices behave like you'd expect they would with the advent of a stray baby appearing on their doorstep--starting with Katie taking strong steps to ensure that the baby cannot be taken away from her.

Also like the first book, a lot of what makes this story entertaining is the interactions between the characters. Katie and Dean are fantastic together and their relationship is a lot of fun to follow.

The "mystery" is a tad weak, and some of the plot elements drag on rather more than they believably should (seriously, that detective needs a little professional retooling if he's going to take that long to find anything), so I can't give this a full four stars. Still, it was fun and I liked it well enough that I'll keep an eye out for the next in the series.

Not Quite Mine is book two in the Not Quite series. I was really excited for this book as it would be about Katie, who appeared to be an airheaded heiress and her brother’s best friend. Plus after Bybee’s MacCoinnich Time Travel series and Not Quite Dating I had a fair amount of faith in Bybee as an author. So why did I only give it one out of five?

The book opens with Jack and Jessie from book 1 getting married. Katie is Jack’s sister and Dean is Jack’s best friend and the reason that Jack met Jessie. After the wedding Katie and Monica, Jessie’s sister head back to Katie’s room in the hotel. There is a baby with a note giving the baby to Katie. Savannah appears to be a miraculous baby as she doesn’t keep Katie from sleep enough to make her unable to work. Like ever.
Anyway enough about Savannah, my real problem with this book is Dean. Dean is way too alpha for a contemporary novel. In a paranormal the hero can be too alpha for real life and get away with it, in a contemporary it hits close to home.

Over the course of the novel Dean barges his way into Katie’s house twice, and pushes into Monica’s when Katie isn’t there once. He uses his height to intimidate, manipulates and order Katie to wear different clothing. In his defence, the high-heels were a bad choice in a construction site, but her clothing had nothing to do with that. He also chooses her food and refuses to leave until he’s seen her eat it all.

And this could have been okay, if Dean had ever backed down in the face of Katie saying no, or if he’d actually been trying to date her in the first half of the novel. He also hires his own PI, because he doesn’t think Katie’s is good enough and doesn’t tell her. And when he finally decides he does want to get back together with Katie, halfway through the novel, does he tell Katie? Of course not, that would imply she has a say in her own life, no Dean asks her brother for permission first. Classy.

The novel also disturbingly acts like the only way Katie should grow up is to stop dressing like a “slut” and become a homemaker type. Seriously, she stops wearing her revealing clothes because they’re not practical with a baby and she’s outgrown the need for that kind of attention and her father congratulates Dean, and recommends he burn the old clothes. WTF?

I’m so disappointed. I wish that Bybee’s editor or beta reader, or anyone had picked this up because it’s still well written and the story is good and logical except for the black alphole of Dean’s character.

Katie has been the party girl heiress since her teens. Gracing the covers of tabloid magazines, being seen on the arm of one guy to the next, and giving her dad fits with tight clothes and short skirts. Lately Katie hasn’t been the same. Her big brother just got married and Katie can’t help but feel her happily ever after may never come.

Shortly after her brother’s wedding Katie is left a 2 week old baby outside her penthouse suite. The note attached tells Katie to take care of Savannah, and that the little girl is now hers – while Katie is more than happy to keep the beautiful baby she’s a little afraid this is too good to be true. So she tries to hide Savannah while she tracks down the mother and tries to get the legalities taken care of.

Dean is her brother’s best friend and the one man she has ever loved. Their relationship was kept secret and the break-up has left her scarred, but when Dean comes sniffing around and picks up on Katie’s secrets they are forced to deal with each other more intimately than either is prepared for.

The reasoning behind gifting Katie with Savannah wasn’t the most believable to me, but I was OK with that. I didn’t feel like it was completely out of the realm of possibility… And in the end the reasoning didn’t matter as much to me as the end result did.

I fell in love with Catherine Bybee’s writing when I read Not Quite Dating. I have been anxiously awaiting this sequel and am happy to report it met and perhaps even exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved Katie and Dean’s story. The tender feelings they still have for each other after their hot and ultimately tragic past can be felt immediately. From page one you are drawn to these two and can’t help but be excited as you see them cautiously working towards their much deserved happily ever after.

I flew through this book in a day as I couldn’t set it down. I needed to read just one more chapter until I found myself at the last page. Not Quite Mine is sweet and romantic and the kind of book that makes you fall in love with the romance genre all over again. Catherine Bybee is quickly becoming a favorite author.

This was all kinds of nonsensical. When the mystery of the baby is solved, you'll be like

wtf?

...not cause it's surprising in any way but just because of how alarmingly ridiculous and detailed the whole idea was.

Overall the characters were flat, and I had a hard time caring much about them. However, I was ultimately entertained during the duration of the book, didn't get bored with it and wasn't put off by the prose.

I'd like to see Monica's story. One caveat to that is when Katie visited a relative in the hospital and was like "forget what the doctor says, I want to talk to the nurse" -- because her bestie Monica is a nurse, and as such she apparently believes they have more in depth medical knowledge about the patients outlook and prognosis than the doctors do -- it irked me. But that's a pet peeve that comes straight from my doctor husband's brain into mine. Regardless, Monica seems to be on an interesting trajectory and thus far Bybee has been consistently readable.

I read book one such a long time ago, but when I found myself with another Kindle Unlimited deal, I couldn't pass up going back to the audio of this series. I forgot how much I'd enjoyed the narration for these. It was one of those situations of a book hitting me at the perfect time. I haven't read much contemporary lately, and I found myself craving it a bit and this seemed to hit all the right buttons for me. Especially with the engaging audio. I suspect I'll use my KU to binge my way through this author.

I'm swooning guys.
Forever swooning.

I loved everything about Dean - he was the perfect southern gentleman who had his heart broken by the one women he has ever loved: Katie.

Katie and Dean had a perfect secret relationship, until one day it wasn't perfect anymore. Katie, who is also Jack's sister, had a miscarriage and didn't really know what to do with her life or how to have Dean in it anymore. So of course, she walked away. She was hurt and needed time to heal on her own. However, you easily fall in love with her spunky attitude.

I shipped the hell out of Dean and Katie. Plus, throw in a mystery baby and you've sealed my fate. I was head over heels for these two. I didn't really like Dean's ex Maggie, who you sort of know about in the first book. You finally meet her and find out how she plays into this whole mysterious situation in the book. I still don't like the girl but you can't help but feel bad for her since she knew that Dean would never love her like he loved Katie. It was also Katie for Dean's heart - no one else.

I still loved everything about this book and the epilogue made my heart pitter patter even more. I can't wait to dive into the next book in this series!

Hotel heiress Katelyn “Katie Morrison thought she would never have the chance at motherhood, until a baby arrives on her doorstep. As complicated as the note is explaining that the birth mother wants Katie to have custody of baby Savannah, Katie can’t help but feel obligated to find the mother and make sure this is what she truly wants. Becoming a new mother is hard enough but trying to hide it until she figures out what to do is another, when her one true love of her life is back and the chemistry is still there, Katie walked away once but she doesn’t know if she can do it again.

Wonderful story, Katie’s face has been splashed on tabloids for years but she is nothing like the once wild child she used to be. When she left Dean it was complicated but she never shared the true reason why with anyone as Dean begins to get closer to Katie he begins to realize he may have been wrong about her all along. Always a sucker for second chance stories and the door is definitely open for more boos in this series.

Adorable! Loved all the characters. Dean was the perfect Southern gentleman with his darlin' accent and cowboy boots and hat! I am a sucker for them country boys. Katie's got spunk and I loved her attitude on life. I wish more details about Savannah were included, but overall it was excellent, and she was adorable. I definitely will read the next book in the series because Monica was an awesome side character, and a book all about her is well deserved.

Not Quite serisinin ilk kitabını hiç beğenmemiştim.
