Exceptional Regency by an Exceptional Inspirational Fiction Author!
I received an advance copy PDF from Susie Dietze, upon my request. I am under no obligation to give a review. I've loved all of Ms. Dietze's other stories and this book was also wonderful. Initially subtle, the spiritual thread weaves stronger as the novel progresses.
Gemma is being held "emotional hostage" by her narcissistic and toxic SIL. Her love for her two darling nephews keeps her in place as she awaits a forthcoming marriage proposal. Then Tavin Knox interrupts her life, turning everything around.

Squuueaaallll!!! Regency, romance and intrigue all wrapped up together in one splendiferous story! I'm swoony and giddy and heart-palpitating over it all. Handsome, brooding hero who adopts his Scottish brogue when his emotions are deeply stirred. Be still my heart and scrape me off the floor! Phew! And his lady love also known as the irksome woman he has been charged with protecting. An independent heroine with a compassionate heart. Banter galore (and we all know how much I love witty dialogue -- especially in a Regency!) Intrigue and danger and a sweet faith thread about the true meaning of grace. It just doesn't get any better. Really.

For starters, there are moments of delightfully wry wit that often took me by surprise and had me chuckling. Besides the subtle wit, Tavin and Gemma have fabulous banter between them, banter that will keep a smile on your face and have you falling head over heels for them in no time. Speaking of falling head over heels… Tavin. He’s Scottish. (I also sorta see him as Henry Cavill, but that’s not really important right now.) When Tavin’s emotions are running especially deep, he slips into a Scottish brogue and ohhhhh be still my book boyfriend collecting heart! How Gemma managed not to remain in a constant state of swoon, I do not know. But Gemma, for her part, holds her own marvelously well as a heroine. Independent, prone to doing what she pleases (which drives bodyguard Tavin crazy!), compassionate, and warm-hearted with a sweet and sincere faith.
Bottom Line: The Reluctant Guardian by Susanne Dietze belongs on your bookshelf. Whether you’re a fan of Regencies or well-plotted suspense & intrigue or just a fan of swoony romance, put this on your must-reads list! A fan-necessitating hero, a spunky heroine, nail-biting action, a delicious love story, perfectly-timed humor and tender faith. It doesn’t get much better.

This is an action-packed story that has twists and turns at every move, making Tavin and Gemma's story even more enthralling as readers attempt to sleuth out an entire world of espionage. The characters’ backgrounds are fascinating, especially Tavin's backstory, which is quite unique; I love it when his brogue slips out! Though Gemma attempts to be helpful, I appreciate that she does not undermine anyone else while she does so. It is also gratifying to see how God plays a central role in their friendship and emerging romance while they are forced to be together.
This book takes the theme of being a guardian to the next level, with Tavin not just looking out for Gemma's well-being but also earnestly desiring what is best for her. Readers will appreciate the depth of this story as it explores what it means to trust God in making a way, even when things are hopeless. Gemma may feel confined, but her attitude and actions reveal her faith in a God who is bigger than her circumstances.

I do enjoy discovering a new author. Sometimes I do wonder if I will like their work, however. Susanne Dietze has written a perfectly wonderful book and I most assuredly enjoyed every moment of it!!.
The Reluctant Guardian is Dietze's first novel and it is a mighty fine one! Set in Regency England and Scotland, with good dose of greatly done suspense, it captured my attention from the very first and I found it difficult to put down.
Susanne Dietze has created characters that are completely believable and a fine blend of romance and mystery. The repartee between the two main characters is wonderfully done as well. The spiritual aspect is right on target. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will definitely read more of this author's work!

Has to be one of my favorite regency set books of all time. The pure joy it gave me while reading it made me sad to have it end. I really enjoyed the quick suspense and mystery brought through the book. It was a book that fed my craving for love and some mystery.

This delightful story has all the elements that I love! A swoon-worthy hero, a strong capable heroine, tender moments that make you sigh in contentment, a touch of mystery and intrigue, that kept me turning pages, and most of all threads of faith that remind us that forgiveness isn’t something we can earn, it is a gift we need only accept.
These characters are so well written, that I felt like I was in the story with my friends. From early on I found myself invested in their story and swept away with the engaging storyline. If you haven’t read this book yet, I’d encourage you to find a copy.
Gemma Lyfeld isn’t a shrinking violet. She knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to go after it. While she does have one fear, she faces it with determination. I found myself cheering for her. I appreciated her spunk and her tenacity.
Tavin Knox is a government agent, he isn’t interested in attending parties, rubbing shoulders with the upper crust, and he certainly isn’t interested in dancing or escorting a lovely lady around London. Especially not one who takes chances and distracts him from his job.

Smugglers, the London season, and plenty of growing attraction make The Reluctant Guardian a quick read because you won’t want to put it down.
After an expected proposal doesn’t happen, Gemma Lyfield’s only goal is to experience one season in London before returning to her brother’s home to care for her two nephews. It’s her lot in life, and she accepts it with grace and humility. But when she runs into trouble while out on a walk, the party in London gains an unexpected member. None other than Tavin Knox, a spy who is determined to infiltrate the smuggler ring.
As the story progresses, Gemma grows from agitation at Tavin’s presence to recognition and appreciation of his protection. The two become friends, sharing past pains, future plans, and biggest regrets.
Susanne Dietz does a wonderful job of giving these two characters events in their past which they carry guilt for but react to with very different responses. And the entire time there’s the added element of danger as the suspect gets bolder in his attempts to capture and quiet Gemma permanently. Then there's some fantastic interactions between Gemma and Tavin. Almost every time these two get thrown together, they're arguing about something.

Years ago, before I learned about Christian fiction novels, I was a fan of Julie Garwood and her ilk, especially when they hosted a Scottish character. I've moved away from her and have always been on the lookout for great historical romances. Books that would "awe" me.
Since historical romance isn't my preferred genre, I am a harsher critique compared to many romance readers out there.
So it was a delightful surprise to pick up Susanne Dietze's book, The Reluctant Guardian. The story of Gemma and Tavin was complex, and yet simple. The story was multilayered, and yet straightforward. As you can see the plot and romance created an unique juxtaposition.
This was far beyond what I thought it would be and I found myself reading it for a second time to ensure that I didn't miss anything. The book is just as good on the second read-through.
The description of the settings, the multi-faceted characters, and the humorous banter made this more than an enjoyable read. It allow me to escape into a far distant world and live a life of love and adventure.

This book had an interesting plot full of mystery and historical intrigue about smugglers and spies. The story also included some clean regency romance. I loved Gemma's relationship with her two nephews, her determination, wit, and her banter back and forth between Tavin. Fun story, great characters, very well written-I really enjoyed it!

Susanne Dietze’s first novel was also by first read from Love Inspired. I have had, mixed experiences, to say the least with many Christian Regencies. This one I did enjoy, with the witty banter between the characters, and the original plotline involving a smuggling racket, and an innocuous red cloak in the wrong place and time.
In some Regencies and Historical Novels there is little or no sense of place or period. You can look at maps all you like, but to me it felt like the author might have visited some of the places involved in the story, and it was fascinating to find out that one of the most important details was based on real events.
There was, I think, some danger with a Regency story involving a spy/smuggling plot for the protagonists to seem like ‘stock’ characters very much like those from other books just with different names. I did not find that here. Jemma and Tavin were both hurting people, struggling with mistakes from their past, but Jemma embraced forgiveness to make her a stronger person. Her love and devotion to her Nephews and remaining family (despite this being used to control her), was probably the defining point of her character. I think she became stronger as the story progressed, realizing she did not depend on the suitor who jilted her for her happiness. I did appreciate her romantic love of castles and ancient buildings, as well as her relationship with her friend Frances, would now be called a ‘nerd’ for her interest in Roman artefacts. Guilty on both counts.
Tavin was not too stereotypically Scottish, in fact he tried to hide his accent to fit it, and I think his reactions and responses were realistic in the first part of the novel. There was no insta-love between him and Gemma, which meant it didn’t get too fluffy or corny, except towards the end.
The spiritual content was handled well, with the messages about forgiving oneself, and redemption, and I did not feel it came over as too preachy.
My only complaint, which applies to a lot of books honestly, was with the accents. It seems to me that some American authors use the same accent for all lower British characters, regardless of time and location. An accent that usually involves frequent use of the word ‘Ye’ from Hampshire to Orkney. I think I picked up a couple of Americanisms here and there, but nothing too egregious.

Forgiveness
Tavin and Gemma are both struggling with forgiveness. Gemma is blaming herself for a fire that killed her parents, and Tavin is blaming himself for the death of a customs agent even though he didn't pull the trigger. Tavin feel he have to work at catching bad guys to earn God's forgiveness. Emma feels as if she has to take care of her two nephews (whom she loves) and her sister-in-law's abuse for what happen to her parents. God forgives us all we have to do is ask. Gemma stumbles across smugglers and Tavin had to protect her from the one that calls himself the sovereign. We know who the true Sovereign is. This story has murder, attempted murder, racism, ( Tavin's father was Scottish and his mother from England his grandmother was not happy about that) and finally healing of two hearts Tavin and Gemma

What a lovely story!
The Reluctant Guardian is inspirational historical romance at its finest. Clearly the author knows this timeframe well (regency England) and how to build the romantic tension between hero and heroine. Ms. Dietze does a superb job setting the stage for the leads and engaging the reader.
Gemma and Tavin's protector-protected relationship begins slowly, but crescendos into a believable & sweet friendship/ romantic relationship. I loved watching it all unfold, page after page, and oh! The end was swoon a little, sigh-worthy good!
I'll definitely look for more books by this new-to-me author. What a fantastic debut! Highly recommend for fans of inspy historical romance.

Not only was the story satisfying, but Susanne's writing was beautiful and crisp, transporting me to the Regency Era with excellent imagery and historical precision. Well done!

Gemma Lyfeld has no clue what she did when she wore her red cloak, inadvertently signaling smugglers & endangering herself. Tavin Knox has orders from his higher ups to protect her at all costs. When the danger escalates, can Tavin keep her safe when she scoffs at his every move to protect her and will his heart betray him when it comes to love?
These two are quite the characters! Gemma can be headstrong and independent and that creates quite a few sparks. Tavin is the swoon-worthy hero I like to read about; loyal and devoted to his job, natural protector and a keen observer of his surroundings, he makes the perfect undercover government agent! Even when a certain young lady scoffs at his seemingly overbearing ways; if only for her own good and to keep her alive! I enjoyed the banter between these two, I found myself chuckling a few times. Gemma's nephews added a fun layer to the story & she is fiercely devoted to them, enjoying every precious minute she has to tend to their care & well-being. I also enjoyed the layer of mystery shrouding this story; it kept me guessing until the surprise ending. As for the romance, it's a slow burn that keeps you anticipating the outcome and turning pages to find out the end result—of course we all know they get their happily-ever-after, but it's the fun journey I enjoy so much! All in all, a great regency with many layers, jaunty banter & wit, character depth I love, and a great faith these two have that plays out in the story. A delightful mix of intrigue, a little mystery, and good old fashioned romance at its best!

Gemma's nephews added a fun layer to the story & she is fiercely devoted to them, enjoying every precious minute she has to tend to their care & well-being. I also enjoyed the layer of mystery shrouding this story; it kept me guessing until the surprise ending. As for the romance, it's a slow burn that keeps you anticipating the outcome and turning pages to find out the end result—of course we all know they get their happily-ever-after, but it's the fun journey I enjoy so much! All in all, a great regency with many layers, jaunty banter & wit, character depth I love, and a great faith these two have that plays out in the story. A delightful mix of intrigue, a little mystery, and good old fashioned romance at its best!

The Reluctant Guardian really kept my attention from the first page to the very last. It was full of action and just the right romance. This was my first book I have read from Susie Dietze and I have to say she's a first-rate writer! I love her writing style. She kept this reader satisfied, happy, and engaged!
Gemma Lyfeld is as stubborn as the day is long. Gemma’s nephews added humor to the story. I had to chuckle a few times at their antics. Boys will be boys! I can just imagine how my grandson will be when he is their age! And Tavin, ever the protector and guardian. So much like my loving husband. Tavin makes a great undercover agent even when he is distracted by Gemma!

Wonderful Regency by Susie Dietze.
This one grabbed me right from the start. It took place in London and a country estate. Some of it was based on real situations, which I just loved.
Gemma is almost “on the shelf”; she is devoted to her nephews Petey and Eddie, since her brother Peter and his wife seem to ignore them.
Enter Tavin Knox, a friend of her sister Amy’s husband Wyling. He is rich and titled but has a murky past. He now works for the Crown and is very mysterious. He has some issues from his past he needs to resolve.
Unknown to her, Gemma garners the interest of a smuggler and Tavin is tasked with protecting her. The tale plays out with much intrigue and Gemma offers to help catch the smuggler leader: the Sovereign, who only she can identify!
In this story, they both grow in their faith and learn to trust one another and trust their lives to the One who loves them both. The writing was interesting and informative. Great suspenseful ending. I will certainly read more of Susie Dietze!

This Regency romance has just the right balance of suspense and banter to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The weight of society and family expectations has exceedingly complicated Gemma and Tavin's lives individually creating a delightful tangle at the intersection of their paths.
Gemma's compassionate nature and tender mother's heart for her nephews make her an easy-to-love heroine. The romance thread evolves beautifully from brother(in-law)'s friend with a healthy dose of antagonism to a determined protector. Once Tavin finally began slipping into his Scottish brogue I was a complete goner in the best readerly way!
The characters are well developed and authentic individuals learn to trust one another and lean on their faith as they make peace with their past and discern God's will for their future. I'd be delighted to follow these characters in future stories.

I am a huge fan of historical romance. I miss the Love Inspired Historical line so much. Through it I discovered some amazing authors. When I found out I was matched with a blind match book review - I was so excited. When this book showed up all wrapped up like a present I was thrilled. I love books that take you on an adventure. The author has well researched the Regency Era. I learned so much reading this book. Gemma and Tavin's protector-protected relationship begins slowly. It develops into a friendship and then deeper. One of the things I loved about this book is the characters. They are well written. Gemma is so stubborn - and so relatable. The author has written a great story line that will grab your attention as soon as you start reading it. I enjoyed reading this book.

The Reluctant Guardian by Suzanne Dietze is a Harlequin Christian Historical Romance. Tavin Knox is a government operative in 1817. He is forced to protect Gemma Lyfield and keep her safe from a criminal who is afraid that she can identify him. Gemma is a 24 year old spinster aunt who thought she was on the verge of a betrothal. Instead she ends up going to London for the season with her sister, brother-in-law, two nephews, and Tavin. What ensues is adventure, suspense, and surprises. This is an enjoyable story with interesting characters.

The Reluctant Guardian is a wonderful read! Susanne Dietze paints vivid pictures with her words, and I loved stepping into the Regency world she created. The story of Gemma Lyfeld and her reluctant guardian, rich in details and descriptions, is a charming blend of history, mystery, and romance. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this engaging tale!

The Reluctant Guardian (2017) by Susanne Dietze is an entertaining stand-alone novel. This book was released this past February by Love Inspired Historicals. This book comes in all forms including eBook, and is 288 pages in length. With a full-time job and a busy five-year old, this novel took me four days to read. I purchased this novel to review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own. I give this story 5 STARS. This book is a Historical Christian Romance set in Britain during the Regency Era.
I enjoyed reading this story. It was exactly the book I needed in order to escape a particularly stressful week with my students. This book really does have everything a hopeless romantic could ever want in a book: a strong, capable, and smart heroine, a handsome and tortured hero, an interesting Season with elegant parties and a masquerade, a really bad villain, and a bit of mystery and suspense. This book is written almost flawlessly and is filled with fantastic quotes. I think I may have highlighted a good 1/4 of this book. Here are my two favorite in terms of excellent craft and wit:
“She drew his attention like the point of a compass to true north, and he had to struggle to fix his focus on other things, like his task.”
AND…
“He may be handsome, but I cannot spend my life educating a husband. It is too exhausting.”
Aren’t these brilliant lines?! Ms. Dietze, you have exquisite skill at turning a phrase!!! There are many, many more exceptional lines, but I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone.
For me, one of the best parts of this book is the spiritual battle Gemma and Tavin face. Their different spiritual struggles made both characters all the more real to me. Gemma struggles with trusting her future to God. It is very clear she loves and trusts God in the here and now, but she struggles to trust Him with her future. Gemma believes herself to be on the straight path to spinsterhood. She is 24 and past her prime, so she thinks. She is going to London to have her first and only Season, in a sense to check it off her bucket list before she completely resigns herself to life as a lonely old maid. Instead of giving her future to God and letting Him plan her steps, Gemma makes her own “secret” plans, which adds to the suspense of the story and really gets her into a bit of trouble. Gemma finally realizes that she can’t be the master of her future — she has to turn it over to God. And, in doing this, she comes to understand that God’s plan for her is better than anything she could have ever dreamed. I am very guilty of doing this. I often rely on myself rather than God when it comes to my future. Gemma is a great reminder for me to rely on God, and not so much on myself. He is God, and I am not.
Tavin’s spiritual struggle is with forgiveness. Boy, do I understand that struggle! Forgiveness is a hard concept in and of itself, but add the fact that I don’t have to do anything to get it from God other than say I’m sorry, and I’m left flummoxed. What do you mean all I have to do is ask God for forgiveness? That seems too easy! Forgiveness is powerful. It makes me acceptable to God. In my mind, that is a BIG deal. It shouldn’t be an easy thing. Tavin struggles with this concept. He thinks he has to work hard and be punished enough in order to get back into God’s good graces. I so totally get this. But, through the help of Gemma, Tavin does realize that forgiveness really is that easy. God’s mercy and grace are boundless when we have a contrite heart. What a beautiful God we have!
I really enjoyed this story so much, and cannot recommend it enough especially if you are in need of a good book to get lost in. Susanne Dietze is an excellent writer and storyteller. If you are looking for a lovely and engaging Historical Romance then this book is for you. Purchase it today. You will not be sad that you did!

A fun regency story that had a bit of a suspense angle to it.
Gemma is a devoted aunt who happens to take a walk at the wrong place in the wrong colored cloak. (This is a plot device based on an actual historical account, which made the story even better.) Because she sees the face of a notorious wanted smuggler/murderer, the government fears that her life is in danger, and assigns a federal spy to guard her.
Tavin Knox has NO interest in trailing a woman about London with two nephews in tow. He has no interest in it being her first/ONLY season, he has only passing disgust for her relationship with the pansy-arse neighbor she's been betrothed to who jilted her and is parading his new fiancee under her nose, while she still treats him like a dear friend.
Until he gets to realize that she's spunky, brave, interesting, and prettier than he first thought.
There were TWO reasons I withheld a star from this book. The first is that Dietze built up this whole 'faith' angle, that Tavin lived his beliefs, talked about them, etc. But then she crapped all over that for the sake of the luvvvv angle, in the end. She whinged about how he didn't have much faith left (?!) and how he had to turn his life around... whatever THAT means, because there's no damn evidence of it, to be found.
The second reason is because there was this WHOLE, H.U.G.E. to-do about Gemma's secret fear of killing her parents that went absolutely nowhere. It was sloughed off and... well, it ruined the story for me, to have so many GOOD things just shoved out of the story. Faith. Fear. Forgiveness.
I felt it could've been done WAY better if these things hadn't been ignored or pushed to the sidelines.
I am definitely keeping this one, though.
Also, should add that the author put in the 'Amelie' kiss. (edge of jaw, corner of eye, corner of mouth, then lips) It always amuses me when authors add the 'Amelie' kiss, like we won't notice they're borrowing THE MOST amazing moment of a movie, hello...

I don't think I have ever read any of Susanne's books before but I really enjoyed this story and hope to read more of her work. This book is well written and has intriguing characters and situations. I know you will enjoy it.
Lady Gemma Lyfeld is upset because her neighbor didn't offer her the proposal that she had expected so she puts on her red cloak and goes for a walk. She has never heard of the 'Lady in Red' that was a part of the smuggling ring and runs into the head man named the Sovereign. She is rescued by a mysterious Scottish spy. When she goes to London for her first season the spy goes with her to guard her.
Government Agent Tavin Knox is trying to break up a smugglers ring. He goes to a close friend's home. He inadvertently breaks up a marriage proposal, causes his friends sister-in-law pain, and sees her walking to the ridge dressed in red. He manages to save her but must keep protecting her during her season. He thought he was immuned to beautiful women but this woman and her two nephews has gotten under his skin.
A great Journey of intrigue. God has a plan for this broken couple. Neither have any hope for the future but God gives them a hope and a future. A future neither could have even dreamed of. God has a plan for you too. Just give Him your heart and watch Him work in your life.

Though not a bad book, the story was somehow not finished for me. It took quite a while to really WANT to know the secrets held by the two characters, and when revealed...well, I felt the “resolving” was too quick/pat for the story. Maybe saying how they would both be fighting a great while to resolve their personal guilt would have made more sense. Unless we were to feel that it was in finding each other that they each believed in The Grace of Jesus to release guilt. If that made sense.
Also, there was a made, only shown once, but Tavin asks himself if she had unlocked a back door. We never REALLY get an answer.
So many characters that I looked to see if I was missing a series somewhere. Also, the boys situation. Why does their dad not care at all? Did the brother and sister-in-law use Gemma’s guilt to have her as companion? Where they just cruel people? Heck. I was starting to think maybe the sister-in-law started the fire, as she was so cruel. Some questions were answered so close to the end, it was maddening. Example was how Wyling had med Tavin to begin as one point.
No sex or heavy violence. No inappropriate language.
I would give the author another try as it was a nice read, but I would not make this a “keeper” for my home library.

What I Loved: I enjoy a good Dietze novel. They’re always perfect for a quick, light read and The Reluctant Guardian was a prime example of that. Dietze engages the reader with vivid historical detail and authentic lingo. I appreciate the captivating mystery as well as a very interesting side of the Regency era that I had not heard about before now. And Dietze wraps this up with tons of playful banter and a solid message for the soul.
Rating and Recommendation: I’m giving The Reluctant Guardian 4.5 stars and recommending it to those who enjoy Regency fiction.

I won a copy of the The Reluctant Guardian through a recent giveaway, and I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed the story tremendously! From realistic characters to a plot full of mystery and intrigue, this book is full of surprises. Susanne Dietze is a skilled storyteller. Her settings come to life through rich description, complementing the storyline perfectly. I was engaged from page one. I’d give it a definite "two thumbs up". Looking forward to reading her other books soon!

Beautiful book full of love and adventure
I am so glad I bought this book! I was worried at first that the faith parts would be too heavy-handed, but they felt natural after a while. Our lead couple are absolutely heroic and swoon-worthy, and I wished the epilogue could go on forever and ever because I wanted to see more of them. All the characters were well-rounded and well-written. Do read this book. It’s wonderful!
