Ph.DEAD

Rate this book
Forensic psychologist and perpetual loner Dr. Bentley Gamble is murdered, and becomes a ghost. To move on to the next realm, he must find out who killed him. His is but the latest in a series of murders to occur at his dysfunctional college campus, the Elmer Butte (pronounced “byoot”) College of the Liberal Arts. Offing people isn’t even the half of it.
A series of campus sex crimes may have something to do with who gets bumped off. The sex crimes also lead to blackmail and various permutations of insanity and mayhem. Small wonder everyone calls the college Elmer Butthead.
The ghost detective gets it all sorted out, but not before he has ghost sex and pulls his fair share of pranks to get even. Ghosthood messes with his DNA, and he finds it increasingly difficult to act human when instead he can be haunting people and taking possession of their souls. He is as misunderstood in death as he was in life.
The novel’s dark humor and satire of eggheads are used to make a very real point about the problem of sex crimes on campuses across the nation.

About the author

J.P. Bloch

5 books6 followers
JP Bloch writes dark (sometimes funny) psychological thriller and mysteries. Sometimes he adds a dash of the supernatural. JP believes that life's problems can be a wellspring for creativity. Don't get mad, write a novel!

JP likes to write in the alienist genre—loners and anti-heroes who have trouble feeling connected to other people.

His turn-offs include Brussels sprouts, bigotry, and people who think life is simple. He enjoys people who have gained wisdom from hardship, and ask questions more than they assume answers. Tumultuous skies are preferred over sunny ones.

Quirky and immensely entertaining, I'm not sure what genre this murder-mystery-ghost-story-social-satire-humorous novel should be included. It succeeds in all of the aforementioned categories: the murder mystery is challenging; the social satire is razor sharp; the ghost story is surprisingly believable; and, without question, it's a very funny book.

I've read all of Bloch's books, and this may be, arguably, his best yet..."Identity Thief" and "Deadbeat Dad" both close contenders. I was especially delighted by the slicing-and-dicing of the academia political correctness that sometimes brings higher education to a semantics stand-still. It was very amusing, sharply insightful, and brutally honest.

I don't want to give away too much - if any of the plot. All surprises should be left available to the reader to savor. But, I highly recommend this book!
