Three children decide to excavate a peat bog to find the remains of a Maori warrior Reinui said to have been lured there by an escaped slave, Tupu. They follow clues in a poem about the event and are aided by Gregor a tough and curious cat.
At first glance, "Three Archaeologists" looks like a children's book. The cover is cute and appealing, albeit quite simplistic. Alas, this is no children's tale, no whimsical read about three people following a legend to seek the truth. No, it's a dry and drawn out, almost memoir-ish tale, interspersed with poems. To be fair, I only got about a third of the way through before I realised that I really didn't care much for the characters nor the plot and, in fact, was merely reading the words without actually retaining them.
I'm not even sure they'd introduced the cat.
As a complete aside, the cat in the picture is a calico and therefore almost certainly female.
