A few days before Bree's upcoming wedding, she and her father spend a day in the mountains, and he tells her about the family's early days on a small ranch in California, the tragedy that struck her mother, and how they came to live in the valley.
Brad was born in rural New England and grew up reading Louis L'Amour, Luke Short, A.B Guthrie, Jr., and even Edgar Rice Burroughs. He knew at 14 he wanted to write for a living, and refused to give up the goal even when the odds seemed overwhelmingly against it. Now, thanks to Amazon, his stories are now available. He is a member of the Western Writers of America
Brad fell in love with the Old West at a very young age. It began with movies and old TV series like GUNSMOKE and BONANZA, and later expanded to western novels. This led to his study of western history. The pioneers, the Indians, the cattlemen, the gunfighters. His interest in history is not so much about wars and great leaders, but the people who lived on the land. And that's what he writes about. The people. He doesn't write about the old west as much as he writes about what it might have felt like to be there.
He loves contact from readers. He can be reached by email at mccabewesterns@gmail.com if you want to discuss his stories, or even just the American West in general.
Excellent book that continues Johnny McCabe's stories of when he settled in the west. Explains a lot of things. Entertaining, action packed, emotional. It was an interesting way for Johnny to tell his daughter about his past.
A few times readers find authors who introduce them to friends that will be with them the rest of their lives. Brad Dennison has given me more of those and I truly appreciate it.
An extremely well written chronicle of the main character and his brothers lives the led them to the land they love.
A very unusual, but excellent account of the main characters life as it briefly occurred, as told to his daughter. Very good transition back and forth in time. An unusual feat of written accounts of a chronological transition the main character lived. Taken from brief excerpts of the previous books with deeper details. It made for an even deeper and better read than any prior to this one. Hard to do in any type of fictional genre! If I didn't know better, I'd think the author KNEW a family history such as this one. I finished the book feeling as if "I" actually had known the McCabe family. Nuff sade.......I NEED TO BUY THE HARD COPY OF THE BOOK SERIES!!
This is most definitely the most boring book of the 12-book series. This book is basically a continuation of back story for the rest of the books. However, the story telling is just between Johnny and Bree, rather than the whole family. Again, I feel like this is actually written by another person, and likely a different proof-reader. The errors have magically disappeared (my reason for 2 stars instead of 1), and the feel for the story is different. You could skip this book and never miss a beat of the rest of the series.
I found the story as usually very good, love the multi use of all the characters used at different time in the story! I like the lite romance between the characters and the bond they develop and the attitude that doing the right thing should be a way of life! the way I remember the way life was when I was a child and neighbors and looked out for one another. Love the books u write thank you!
Brad Dennison does a fine job of continuing to reveal the backstory of the McCabe family. The story doesn’t get boring or repetitive. Western justice was hard, but the family was loyal to one another. This is one of the books that makes me look forward to bedtime so I can read the next few chapters.
This was the story of Young, McCabe and Lura with answers to her murder and several questions of the series. Loved it. Clever that this was not the first book. I would’ve been much more heartbroken when Lura was shot. We were prepared for it and had made the adjustment. Still touching and sad though.
Have enjoyed every one of these books and will be sorry to finish the last. The author has done an excellent job in developing the characters throughout, and I have had a hard time putting them down.
Brad Dennison has created another fantastic western in Shoshone Valley and if you enjoy reading good Western books then I highly recommend The McCabes series.
I love series books. You get to know the characters and this is my 8th book out of12. I'm getting ready for book 9! I hope Mr. Dennison is in the process of book #13. I can't to see what Johnny is up to next!
Written well and gave a up close and deep insight to the kind of man Johnny McCabe was. Very interesting and another book like all the others that you don't want to put down once you start reading. Highly recommend it.
This whole series has been a wonderful read. I love the characters and the interaction they share with the others. It has been a good filler book as Johnny continues to share his past with the family. An excellent read....
I enjoyed the book I didn't think I would but it feels in a lot of detail on parts that I've already been mention I think you will enjoy ITIT's a good read that as always
Even tho in each book the story line repeats itself some. Each book stands alone as a continuation of the McCabes . It is a must to start with book one and follow in the order written. Still hoping for Hollywood to get busy .
The McCabe Clanits trials and tribulations throughout the years. This book is about how these brothers pulled it all together each had their own talents. And they all had each other's back. Returning to their valley in Montana to start cattle and horse ranch. Raising his children with the help of his murdered wife's Aunt Ginny, his brother Joe and best friend Zeke all stick with Johnny McCabe. He's a rough man dealing with the perils of the west, his wife's stepfather hires a bushwacker to murder Johnny, because he felt he wasn't good enough for Lura, but it really was about him, Dr. Buzzard, as he was known was a narcissistic controller, he thought he was to good for the TOWN and settlers who lived there. He had high ideas of running for government and didn't need a stepdaughter to embarrass him as a pregnant unmarried woman. Threatened to kill her if she didn't leave town, which she did to stay with her mother's sister Aunt Ginny. This is an analog of the life of Johnny McCabe and his brothers and life long friend Zeke. He's had a rough time but he kept it together, even when he went on a Tequila bender because he thought he had lost Lura...really interesting lots of action and a glimpse of how the West was settled.
Continue from book 6. Johnny still telling about the early years. He goes to California meets Lura, thinks she's broken up with him, goes on a binder, stays the winter with the Shoshone, back to California reunites with Lura marries her has 3 kids, her death, takes family and Ginny to the Valley in Montana where he builds their ranch. Which all was mentioned in the first 5 books. But even though I knew what was going to happen still 4 Stars.
My first McCabe read and it will not be my last. The descriptions of the characters and the winter weather were good enough for me to be able to visualize all of them. Great read.
Brad Dennison is a very good writer in that he builds the theme up gradually from small to large this I just another of his good books . Lots of details with thin book .
