the "no rules" subtitle hooked me. More for art quilters. Excellent instructions. Loved all the many finished quilts!

This quilts in this book are AMAZING - gorgeous, colorful, fanciful, detailed, breathtaking works of art. I never even knew quilts could be this gorgeous or inspirational.

And that is what this book is to me - an amazing inspiration:
- the great photography of these amazing quilts
- what inspires her (a lot of fish! [hence a lot of fish quilts])
- the value of letting go when trying to create

I really like this quote from the first page:
"The permission to play and the enouragement to explore - ways of breaking down the wall - are the most important things I can give my students."

Her how-to fabric collage chapter is also good, detailed, and illustrated well with great photos. There are even 2 fish templates to get you started!

I love the emphasis on free-hand quilting, bending the rules, letting go. I also love her discussions and examples of getting inspirations and making patterns from photographs.

I gem of a book!

I enjoyed the photos of the students projects. The coral reef wall hanging was spectacular.

Ms Carlson uses many themes in her quilts, but the visual displays and instruction focus on fish. Glamorous fish. The various methods for applique and machine quilting can be applied to hand quilting.
