Looking for a good home maintenance reference book, so I checked a few out of the library. I liked that I didn't have to dub myself a "dummy" or "idiot" with this book as with the series books.
I skimmed through this, just reading passages relevant to me. It's well organized by theme, with issues written as bold subheads. This seems a good general overview, but having been published in 2000 is slightly out of date. Much of the advice is fairly timeless however, and it provides good guidance. It's not quite as robust as I'd like, but it did help me better understand a few quirks I want to fix.
I originally rated this 3 stars, but after reviewing "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Home Repair and Maintenance" and "Home Maintenance for Dummies", I bumped it up to 4 stars. The idiots guide covered home repair, but I found it too technical and the attempt to be cute with puns and jokes in the headers made it difficult to navigate. It made me appreciate the simple and straightforward manner of this book. This book also covers home appliances, and focuses more on basic common problems.
The Dummies book isn't really comparable as it covers what to do to maintain your home, but not problem solving and repairs. So it seems this book and the Dummies book together would be helpful to have in a new homeowner's library. I did found the instructions more thorough in the Dummies book where it overlapped this book, however. For example in covering how to fix nail pops.
