A midnight attack to the Academy leaves a wall in rubble and deepens the cracks in the already unstable alliances within the school. But for Basen, there are more important matters than the grabs for political power going on around him. His mother’s still rotting away in prison, and his father might kill Basen’s cousin for putting her there. On top of that, Basen’s recent promise to a powerful psychic allows him only a few days before he must return to Merejic for a task that remains a mystery. Determined to free his mother and turn his obligation to the psychic into an opportunity, Basen comes to a risky plan in which he’ll need the help of those he trusts the most. But little does he know that his friends and family won’t be enough to get him out of this alive. He will have to rely on an enemy more powerful than himself.
Only reading it now to finish the story. This installment was very difficult to finish. The writing was poor. I found myself skipping forward far too many times just to get out of meaningless information that neither added to the story or revealed any larger tidbit.
I thoroughly enjoyed where the story when in A Crumble of Walls. I thought it added a lot of dimension to characters we already knew, and continued to develop their storylines thoroughly. Again, as soon as I finished I started reading the final book in the Kin of Kings series.
Basen fulfills his promise to Fatholl in ways he never imagined. in the midst of this promise, battles arise that pit Basen and his friends against enemies in places they didn't plan and find allies he could never have expected
Read this many years ago. Started it again because I forgot I had read it. Then, I remembered. It was an ok read. About book 3 or 4 I started to have problems with the portals.

Rereading this series is a great pleasure. Great Reading Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!
Predictable yet okay to read. At least the characters are likable and when some of them fall you feel sorry for them. The fat little grub gardeners are just rediculous and unbelievable as characters.
