For Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer, Finley Morris, life is good. She loves her job, is well respected by her peers, and has been given an opportunity to take her career to the next level. The only thing missing is the love of her life, who walked out, taking their daughter with her, seven years earlier. When Finley gets a call from her ex, saying their teenage daughter is coming to spend the summer with her, she’s floored. While spending more time with her daughter, whom she doesn’t get to see often, and learning to be a full-time parent, Finley quickly realizes she has not, and will never, let go of what is important.
This review is over 12 months old. I read Never Let Go in 2016 and took down a few notes at the conclusion...
***
I have a real habit of starting books at ridiculous times of the evening (when I should be going to bed) resulting in not being able to put the book down (when I should be sleeping).
As mentioned above, I started this book way too late which resulted in reading into the wee hours of the morning and only getting 3 hours of sleep before getting up for work. Yes, I enjoyed Never Let Go immensely.
I loved learning about Finley's job as a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and everything that it entails - the highs and lows of saving a person, risking one's own life. I have the utmost respect for Military/EMT personnel.
I thought Caitlin's character was well written and summed up a 13yo nicely and I enjoyed the interaction between Finley and Caitlin.
The supporting characters of Finley's mother and co-workers were good.
I didn't take to Nicole's character. Let's face it, she wasn't really in the book all that much. I suppose she was written as a spineless person allowing others to trample all over her and those she loves dearly.
I thought the book ended a little abruptly. I would've liked a couple more chapters or an epilogue exploring the family dynamics of Finley, Nicole and Caitlin.
This could have been a 4 or 4.5 star story because the story is a good one the writing is well done and the characters are likeable but the author spent too much time on the descriptions when it came to the rescues and I found myself just skipping those pages as soon as I saw them. Another reason that I think this book is lacking is because of the rushed ending and how the author didn't really focus on building any kind of new relationship between Nicole and Finley, instead she relied on the emotions created by their original relationship to carry the story. Whilst I think that the original relationship was well written, I think that there needed to be some growth in it because to me the end felt like it was the middle and Nicole and Finley still had a lot to work through, an apology and make up sex wasn't enough to convince me that they had a solid future together.
3.5 stars. A pleasant, quick read. The MC is Finley, a highly decorated "swimmer" for the Coast Guard. The book follows Finley doing her dangerous job of jumping out of helicopters to rescue stranded boaters or swimmers sometimes in rough seas & weather. Although her job takes up a good portion of the book, it was well written and I never felt it was too much. Finley has a 13yr daughter whom she sees only occasionally after Nicole left Finley, taking Caitlin with her. Caitlin wants to live with Finley - who has tough choices to make. I wasn't surprised about the ending (it is a romance) but to me it ended a bit abruptly. If I was reading the paperback I would be flipping the pages, wondering if it was missing a page or two. It didn't need a long epilogue, just a bit more.
I liked this book. It's an easy read and a sweet story. The problem is that it's too damn short. Would have been better if relationships were developed more and personally, I think Finley forgave a bit too easily. Nonetheless, I'm still glad I read it and look forward to the sequel which is twice as long.
I liked this book. And I enjoyed the dynamic between Caitlyn and Finely. That part of great and we'll written and you could feel the hurt Finely and even Caitlyn feels from the broken family situation Nicole has placed them in...basically throughout everything is Nicole's fault (which works for the story). What didn't work for the story was the last few chapters...after Finely visits her mother. It was well beyond rushed and if given a few more pages, a little more explanation, a little more interaction between Nicole and Finely, it would be easy to give it a higher rating. I liked the book, I liked the characters, and the story.
I am not one for short books...but this one had great punch to it. Thrills, heartbreak, and a happy ending. This is a great adventure that everyone should read. I definitely recommend this book.
4.5 ⭐️ I liked the fast pacing of the story, but I feel like the resolution to the MCs' estrangement from each other was rushed. This said, I'll still be reading book 2 of this series.
I really liked the rescue swimming scenes and The back story of Finley's life and how she got to where she is currently. The love story needed a little more at the end. Was too quickly resolved.
Maybe a little late to this party, but I loved it. New author for me, but loved the summary. Characters are relatable and story realistic. So pleased it's part of a series. Can't wait to read the next story.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked the way the author explained the process the swimmer rescue unit conducts their search and rescue. That was very well done. Fin's relationship with her daughter was very endearing. The love relationship between Nicole and Finn and then their parting of the ways. That was poignant and thought provoking. It was a well done book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It isn't very often that you get to read a book about the Coast Guard and different jobs that they have . I highly recommend this book to anyone .
This is the first time I have read anything by this author and I'm hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed these characters and the rescue swimmer storyline as well. I'm going to purchase the sequel immediately.
A good story. Nice strong lead woman central character. The plot moves along nicely. The tension builds nicely during the one harrowing event. A quick, easy read.
