This series has EVERYTHING I could ever want. Amazing characters, multiple revenge plots, stunning world building, an intricate magic system, the sweetest male characters, a magical quest, and one of the most beautiful combinations of mythology and folklore… I’ve ever read. Honestly, I’ve never experienced such a stunning combination of Finnish, Russian, Greek, and Native American, myth and lore! These different cultures, might not sound like they can be woven together, but Kuivalainen does it… and she does it beautifully. You can feel how much research, and passion have gone into this series. Every element compliments one another, and the plot twists & reveals had me guessing the entire time.

I will warn you, the first two books end on intense cliffhangers. There’s also quite a bit of heartbreak and emotional turmoil, but I swear it’s worth it in the end. 🥹

My only criticism might be the multiple love interests, and almost love triangles. I understand these helped create the plot, and introduced most of my favorite characters! But I’m a loyal girl, and had my eyes set on “the end game” character from the beginning (🫦 IYKYK.) So really, it’s just a personal preference.

The end of this trilogy was extremely bittersweet and has left my heart aching. I’ve grown to adore these characters, and would love a spin-off. 👀

Thank you to Amy Kuivalainen and BHC Press for the opportunity to read this ARC, from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book has left me feeling on one hand, totally freaking devasted, and on the other like I really need to start looking up more Nordic and Viking mythology. This book was really cool cos you get all the answers that have been bothering you all series. There is seriously so many clues laid out in book one and two that only just makes sense now. The final book ties together all the story lines and character arcs while leaving a space open to do more books within this really cool urban fantasy world.

Loved loved loved the story.

But... Why didn't we learn all the story about Mikael? What really happened to him and who did it to him. Why couldn't Anya come to realize and accept her true potential? I would of loved to have seen her really content and in control of her magic. Same for Vanya and the Phoenix. He never fully realized his true potential with the bird in him.

Those are the three things that leave me wondering.

Great story though and I highly recommend to everyone. Thanks so much.

Ever have a book that you don't want to read because you know it's going to be amazing and don't want it to end... so you just don't want to start it? That's how I feel about every Amy Kuivalainen book I've read. I love her world-building and characters so much, and it's hard to say goodbye at the end of her stories.

"Rise of the Firebird" picks up directly after the ending of book two, "Ashes of the Firebird." Ashes left me in a bad mood... horrendous cliffhanger and just sad sad sad feelings. It inspired me to read RotF pretty quickly... and I have very mixed feelings about it. The cast of characters and the mythology within this trilogy are VERY diverse- to the point of being too much. I never felt like I connected with Anya or any of the side characters because the PoV was constantly changing. Death of characters within the trilogy left a big impact, but they all felt unresolved. There is a lot of fantasy traveling- a bit of questing, but mostly just constant getting to the next new place-- until the final showdown that happens in the last few percent of the book. I'm left with SO MANY questions and mixed feelings. If this was book 3 out of 4 I would have loved this book and looked forward to a "real" conclusion.

As it is, I'll give it 4 stars for loving the author and her writing style. I will ALWAYS recommend "The Immortal City" and it's one of the only trilogies I've read that's felt "perfect." This was not my favorite trilogy, but it's an overall great fantasy story.

Thank you Netgalley and BHC Books for an advanced e-copy of this book. "Rise of the Firebird" will be published on March 21, 2023.

Epic urban fantasy with heaps of action, laughs and mythology. Oh and a few sexy bits in between.

Another epic tale of Anya and friends. In this series' 3rd and final book the group is recovering from events in the last but it isn't long before they have a new mission. This time the stakes are higher with Anya setting out to stop Yanka and Baba Yaga's sick game that could see all the worlds come to an end.

I really love this series, I love all the characters. They all seem like people I'd love to have a drink with and just hang out. I love that none of them are perfect. I love that even with everything going on they still have their own personal struggles to deal with. There was a particular part where my heart was ripped open when Anya gets some truth bombs dropped on her that eerily reflect some of my own personal demons. Wow, what a ride!

This story is so epic, I finished it last night and everything that has happened is still sinking in, I think I will be in book hangover mode for a while on this one. Can't wait to read the whole series again knowing all the secrets and reveals.

This book took me a long time to read because it was just MUCH. So many characters and storylines (and new ones introduced in book 3!) and trying to tie up all the relationships and loose threads for the final throw down with Yanka.
While I was happy Anya and Yvan finally got together the rest of the book was SO slow as we built up to the final battle-more characters and plot lines were introduced and then BAM it just ended. And how can she just leave us hanging with Mychal vanishing and his role never fully fleshed out? And poor Aleki, Katya and Izrayl getting those throw away lines that they're dead. Oof.

I love Amy's world building and will continue to read her books but this ending was honestly disappointing.

I did not want this to end!

This was the third and final book in the Firebird Faerie Tales series. I loved the series, and I loved this book. The characters were great! I did not want to see the end of them. I hope the author writes another book that maybe tells more of their stories down the road. All of the characters were memorable, and worthy of a full book of their own. I am so glad I read the series, and I highly recommend it!

Ready for the next in line

I totally enjoyed the complete series. Very easy to read, hard to put down. Got a chance to learn bits of new or rather old language. Only downside was grammatical errors, needed better proofreading. Amazing storytelling abilities. Thank you.

This story continues with Anya and the gang, once they free Yanka and she reveals her true nature. They must switch gears from the expected family reunion to impending battle, as the players of the game for magic start moving across the board once more.
Anya comes into her power and must once again, protect the worlds from darkness; but is she willing to do whatever it takes to stop the powers at play and protect those she loves…

It has hidden identity, visions and prophecies, magical objects and rituals, rescues, quests and battles, gods and demons, secrets and lies, loss and rebirth, love and more magic.
My favorite part to the series remains the same, the characters and their relationships. You just fall in love with this gang of misfits and can’t help but want to see them all happy and in love with each other, some as a family and others more so.

Anya’s story overall has been one of of power, love and self discovery and I loved going on this journey with her.
Yvan is still everything! The grumpy hero coming in for the win after playing the long game was exactly what I needed before seeing this series come to an end. I love seeing how strong their bond is and the love they have for each other.

The ending left me with mixed emotions. I was devastated and ecstatic all at the same time. And there is still some questions we don’t have answered so happy to know this may not be the end …

“Your fire has always sung to my fire. It called us out of darkness. You have always been my destiny, Anya Venäläinen.”

Such a bittersweet finale! I’m almost without words. I have been completely intrigued and obsessed with these books from the beginning and loved being along for the final showdown. The book starts after the heartbreaking events from the end of the second book, so be prepared to live it all again. We meet quite a few new characters along the way and experience places never traveled to before. I love how folklore and tales from a few different countries are woven seamlessly into the already thrilling storyline (NOT woven a la Baba Yaga style). All the characters have such different and vibrant personalities and the humor and friendship is so natural. I was in the edge of my seat and couldn’t put the book down.
As much as I loved this book and the entire series, there is one point of contention that played such a huge roll and I wished had not. The whole mess with the Green Stag should probably have a trigger warning. It was written very vaguely yet openly discussed. I just wish perhaps it could have been handled differently. Like an actual ritual or definitely more consensual.
There are still some loose ends (that were not tied up in a bow) that I would love to see more stories about. But I really just want to be taken back into the world to experience more! I great series and a great finale. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

Hooo--wee! What a ride!
The Firebird story arc ends on a definitive high note! Yanka and Baba Yaga are in their final moves, Anya is finding the courage and strength to stand fast in the midst of devastating loss, learning how to tell who is an ally and who might be offering "help", just to turn around and betray them if it suits them.
Just when I thought Kuivalainen had done all her world-building in the first two novels and this one would just be about bringing everything together... she pulls Anya and Co. into the UNDERWORLD which is a whole other level beyond Skazki and Earth... and throws in new characters, both for and against, for the bargain!
I loved every minute of it. If old, serious folklore and legends are your jam--like Naomi Novik, Anne Elisabeth Stengl, Cornelia Funke, and the like... then I highly recommend this series! Breathtakingly gorgeous, heart-poundingly intense, and an adventure you won't soon forget!

Please, someone tell me that there is a spin off or more books in the universe of this series!
With Rise of the Firebird, Amy Kuivalainen brings the Firebird Fairy Tales series to an end, leaving me a bittersweet taste.
The climax of this story, the final battle between the forces of Yanka and her Darkness, Baba Yaga and her Illumination, and Anya and her friends and allies is epic.
I wouldn't mind at all if the author decides to extend the series; maybe Anya and Yvan in times of peace, the story of Harley as the new Queen of New Orleans and Aramis and Søren rebuilding Svetilo or also the story of Mychal... in short, I would love this story, like most of its protagonists , had no end.
I thank the author, BHC Press, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this story. The opinion I have expressed above is based solely on what I think and feel about this book.

Rise of the Firebird is definitely a book where I regretted not reading the previous two books beforehand. Nevertheless, Rise of the Firebird was a fun read, and I was delighted with the ties to Russian and Finnish mythology. The characters' relationships, banter, and growing attachments to each other made the book's heart. Although I felt like I was swimming upstream a bit in trying to piece together what had happened previously, I still enjoyed this urban fantasy immensely. This only makes me doubly regret not reading the previous two books. I would highly recommend reading this series to get the full beauty of the story. And ultimately, this book has one of the most beautifully wrought endings I have read in a while. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This was definitely the best installment yet in the series - and I loved every minute of reading it. This wrapped up the first two books nicely, and while I won't give any spoilers, I was blown away with how everything ended. Kuivalainen somehow managed to ramp up the tension right up to the moment things are finally resolved. You'll absolutely need to read books one and two or you're going to be very lost, and miss out on some important character building. Highly recommend this series for anyone interested in dark fantasy mixed with mythology.

I just have to rave about this series by Amy! It is filled with such a depth of wonderfully Magical creatures, good against evil, and all three books have left me craving the next! “Anya” is full of Magic and a history that was stolen from her of its existence! Amy sweeps you through Nordic forests to the magic of New Orleans and back again! All swept into a series of Magic, honor, good against evil, and an ending with Love and Hope conquering death, evil and destruction! My daughter needs to read this series!!

What an end to another epic fantasy series by Amy Kuivalainen

This series was an absolute rollercoaster from start to finish. This final installment was just as action-packed as the two that preceded it and everything about this book was so well done, from the adventurous quest, the irredeemable evil, and the bittersweet ending.
The combination of the fight of good vs evil, the diverse and chaotic found family, and the elements of both Russian and Finnish Mythology, created the most captivating and heartwrenching series I have read to date.

Our cast of characters was so compelling that I did not even notice the POV changes because I wanted to know what was happening to everyone.

My favorite character is probably Yvan, he is my baby boi and I love him forever. but also... I am ready for more Søren..

Epic.

Amazing last book in the trilogy. A blending of both the modern world and tales of old culminating in an epic battle between good and evil. A battle that will end with both devastating heartbreak and powerful hope for the future. One of the best books and series I've read recently.

Completely Wrecked

Epic is the only word for this book. Epic love, loss, battles, & magic. Amy has created a series that is filled with characters you despise & others you love. Her ability to weave heartache & hope into folklore from various traditions is second to none. Read this entire series now!

Read the series is a must

This is the last of a three book series. All things must end and I was glad/sorry that they did. The plot gets a tad complicated keeping all the characters straight but well worth the effort

The end of the Firebird series has definitely left me with a book hangover that will be staying with me for awhile. Like the first two in the series, Kuivalainen's amazing world-building abilities are on full display here as she takes Anya and crew through multiple worlds in true faerie tale quest fashion. They meet new allies, annoy new powers, and search for the powerful weapon that will help them defeat Baba Yaga and Yanka once and for all.

Over and over we're reminded that power can be seductive and it is easy to slide to darkness. That seems to have been what happened with Yanka and Baba Yaga and while everyone keeps saying Anya looks like Yanka, and she certainly has some moments of anger, nobody worries about her becoming dark as much as I expected. Maybe because she worries about it, maybe they figure the Firebird won't let it happen? I was surprised it didn't come up more, especially since as the book goes on the idea of revenge comes up more.

There was a lot going on in this book, almost too much for one book. Kuivalainen drags us all through the emotional wringer, even before the final battle. I became so attached to all the characters that even figuring a major final battle wasn't going to go well, losing some at the end made me cry. There were more loose ends left hanging in this book than I expected as well, very unusual for Amy Kuivalainen, which makes me wonder if there will be a spin-off with one or two characters in her next series to answer some of the questions she left us with at the end. And I have to admit I wasn't comfortable with the 'raising of the spring' ritual- felt like a trigger warning beforehand wouldn't have been out of place there. But maybe that's just me? Also, something that would only bother a person from New Orleans but tossed me out of the book's head space every time I read a reference to it, but New Orleans doesn't have basements and you can't dig, or even plan on digging, tunnels or underground war rooms there. Even with magic.

Overall Rise of the Firebird continues the beautiful blend of urban fantasy and Russian/Finnish mythology the series is know for. I do definitively recommend reading the first two books before reading this one, since this picks up right where books 2 left off.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

🖤 Finnish/Russian folklore, fantasy
🖤 Chosen one on a quest!
🖤 EPIC revelations and devastation
🖤 A battle to end all
🖤 Love after loss & the fates aligning
🖤 Incredible found family

Happy release day to this incredible high fantasy read! This is the third installment in the Firebird Faerie Tales series and it is another fantastical ride!! Amy gives us even more to be enthralled with in her mythological world. Brand new beings, creatures and incredible additions to one of my favourite found families in the high fantasy genre.

Anya is going through a period of pure devastation, the grief, evolving power and lack of control sets her on a path of amazing growth. This read gives us elements from the underworld, affairs with ancient magical beings, immortals finding their new path and some of the most epic training scenes. Through the heavier moments and action, we also get a gorgeous romance and see beautiful moments of never ending friendship and connection.

The pacing of this story and Anya's character arc was executed sensationally. Oh, to live in @akuivalainen_author brain- she is creative, I can never predict where she is heading and I am NEVER disappointed. The twists and turns kept delivering even in the final chapters. She is a total genius. Rise has everything and I would highly reccomend this world for your next fantasy read 💫 5 stars!!

Note: this is the conclusion to Anya's main story, but absolutely not the end for these loveable characters (Mychal's story coming Sept).

I received this book for free as a LibraryThing Early Reviewer. This is the third in the Firebird Faerie Tales series. I have not read the earlier books, but now I want to. I typically avoid later books in an ongoing series, but there are so few books with Russian folklore, I wanted to try it.

There were so many characters that I knew it would take me awhile to learn who they were and how they were connected without reading the earlier books, but I did. The characters were of several different human-like species with different talents, some magical and some not. Partway, the story “split” into two primary groups of characters in two different locations, bringing new additional characters in each, so then I had to learn who each of those were, too. I enjoyed how the Russian aspects were woven into it without being a repeat of the best known folktales. It included folklore from other countries, as well. I enjoyed the book, but I still don’t know exactly what the character Mychal is.

There seems to be a ritual rape, but the character seems fine with it afterwards. Perhaps she grew up with such rituals and was accustomed to such things, after all, I have not read the earlier books, but I would have expected her to at least have felt more taken advantage of.

Thank you BHC Press, NetGalley, and Amy Kuivalainen for the opportunity to read the ARC of the re-released version of this book.

I have read the original releases of this series multiple times. It is one of my favorites.
The newly edited version just adds to the story. Brings Anya, Yvan, and their band of heroes more alive.
The characters we meet in this book have my entire heart. I love their quirks, their snark, and how entwined in the family and the story they all become.

I will never stop recommending this book, and this series, and I cannot wait to read the new books our Queen Amy is releasing in this world!

An absolute favorite story weaving mythologies, found family, witchcraft, and pure magic. Five stars. Forever and ever. Amen.

Rise Of The Firebird is book three of A Firebird Faerie Tales Novel series by Amy Kuivalainen. It was such was wonderfully written way to bring closure to this series.

💜 powerful FMC
💜 mysteries
💜 found family
💜 power hungry villains
💜 🌶🌶 spice

This book picks right up where book two left off. Anya and the crew are trying to heal from what had happened at the hands of Vasilli and Yanka. Much like things in book two, once things start taking off, they really take off. Will Anya recover completely? Will Yanka, Vasilli, and Baba Yaga be dealt with? Will everyone survive?

I enjoyed this book and series so much. I loved the fact that there were so many aspects from different mythologies from different cultures spun into a wonderfully written storyline. I do recommend this series.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author Amy Kuivalainen for this ARC. This is my honest opinion of this book

FINALLY!

I was looking forward to this volume for several reasons. I was happy to know how the story would evolve after the end of the second volume, but I was mainly waiting for this volume for the romantic intrigue, and I was not disappointed, I finally got what I had been waiting for since the first volume!
This book is a good end for this series, a mix of actions, revelations, and feelings. I liked the end, we don't stay on our end, and all the intrigues are solved.
I can't wait to see what the author is going to write next.

I was really enjoying the blend of mythology and adventure in this series, but this last book was a let down. It felt like the author stopped enjoying the characters about halfway through the book and was simply working through an outline to get it finished.

Spoilers: It felt to me that the author killed off half the main character crew simply because she didn’t want to write endings for them. There was also not much resolution for the remaining characters, especially Mychal. Overall, I felt like the writing in the last quarter of the book was lazy and lackluster, especially compared to this author’s writing in the Immortal City series.
