Every cop is a criminal and all sinners are saints sang The Rolling Stones. That is put to the test in It's Your Choice Jack. The Jack of the title is a TV reporter with a link straight into the heart of police operations. They give him exclusives, he gives them publicity and turns the occasional blind eye. Jack is also dating a police commander which complicates everything for him, for her, for his job and eventually his whole reason for living. Who guards the guardians? It's been asked in many languages and no one knows the answer.
This is an unusual view of police versus criminals, from the point of view of a hardened local TV news reporter. I enjoyed the insights into corruption among coppers, journalists and politicians. They all manage to convince themselves they are ‘doing the right thing’ while actually just serving their own careers. The story repeatedly misled me as to who are the bad guys and who are the good guys (if any). I shall find it hard to take at face value ever again a TV report of a police drugs raid on a council estate.
