Remembered why I didn’t read the second part of this book when it first came out. It is a really good supplement for AD&D (although it would’ve benefited from an extra line-editing pass)... but the treatment on the origin and nature of spirits is more than slightly disappointing. It makes sense in the context of the AD&D cosmology, but I would’ve preferred a bolder option that turned that idea on its head. However I realise this was probably beyond the scope of the supplement... maybe a new campaign setting? Unfortunately the AD&D line is deader than dead; still, good inspiration to homebrew.

3 stars = I liked it overall, but not by a large margin.

I thought the lore behind the spirits' existence and creation, the adventure suggestions, and a lot of the general explanations were very interesting.

I didn't like the how most of the book revolved around sacrifices and the amount of sacrifices (anywhere from a mouse to 1000gp worth of sacrifices such as cattle killed), especially considering some of the spirits were also listed as being against unnecessary killing. The three types of shamans didn't really work for me either.

This is a great resource for expanding the more metaphysical aspects of your gaming world particularly in the OSR games. This gives an alternative means for divine magic spells that doesn’t depend on the beneficence of divine beings.
