Catherine can’t stop thinking about him! John’s playful, powerful image keeps dancing through her thoughts and sinking deeper into her heart. Truth be told, it’s his incredible eyes that keep her mesmerized. But, she can’t marry the cottier, especially since the ever-so-rich Brian has set his cap for her! Or can she? She knows she must decide soon, but she doesn’t yet understand that her choice will send her life whirling in directions she can’t predict, and will send everyone she loves down a path of grave danger! The lush, green beauty of 1830’s Ireland is a perfect backdrop for the suspenseful romance that unfolds in Devlin’s Daughter. Emily Daniels spins an exciting tale with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you devouring every word and have you thinking, “Just one more chapter...”
The richness of the history, the culture, and the people, this book carries with it the poetry of one of the most beautiful cultures in the world. Set against this amazing backdrop, Emily Daniels weaves a story of love and loss, heartache and salvation. A beautiful piece, this one will need a few tissues.
I’m not spending much time reviewing this book. The whole story left a bad taste that was not overcome by a ‘happy’ ending. Taking place in Ireland, near mid-19th century, a small village seems to turn a blind eye to two revengeful (for some vague undisclosed reason) terrorists that inflict horrendous violence on a poor defenseless woman. The bullies attack her constantly as she walks the same path home from work everyday. By the author’s detailed descriptions there is no way this poor woman should have survived even one attack – let alone the many that were inflicted.
To add to the violence, the woman’s daughter is then subjected to abuse by her new husband, who happens to be the son of one of the attackers. Yes she had a choice in husbands, but went for supposed financial security instead of love. None of this was a secret. None of these awful incidents were scrutinized by village authorities or the religious leader.
I didn’t like this plot. I won’t keep it and I don’t recommend it.
An intense love story that's not for the faint of heart. The aftermath of the Irish Rebellion of 1803 sets a traumatic backdrop to this love story. Catherine is a woman caught in the middle of a terrible decision. Would it be better for her family if she married the young man who loves her or the rich man who has promised to care for her and her family? Her choice leads to unexpected danger for everyone. Yet, the man who loves her doesn't give up on her or her family. He's the epitome of a true hero. WARNING: if you don't want any violence in your novels, you may want to pass this one up. But if you want to see a hero in action, read on! NOTE: The horrible abuses Ann Devlin suffered are factual and documented. The fact that no one defended her speaks to the violence of the era, the instability of the area and the political power these ruthless men had.
