John Barrowman was born in Scotland, and moved to Illinois when he was eight years old. He is bi-dialectal, doing much of his stage and acting work in his American accent, but speaking with family in his Scottish accent.

He moved back to Britain in 1989 when he was hired to play the lead in Anything Goes. He took on a number of West End roles, including the leads in Sunset Boulevard and Miss Saigon and a dramatic play entitled Rope, while working as a children's television presenter and came back to America briefly to work on short lived shows such as Central Park West and Titans. He then bounced around Broadway, West End and the LA Stage for a number of years before moving back to Britain permanently. He won the role of Captain Jack Harkness in the new Doctor Who series and went on to star as Captain Jack in its adult spin-off Torchwood.

John married Scott Gill, his partner of fifteen years, in December 2006.

first I would like to say that I stated to read Arrow: Dark Archer because Malcolm "freaking" Merlyn is my favorite tv villain and that's despite the fact that the tv show Arrow itself has been ruined by the writers after the second season and that is because he is a compilcated man, on one hand he is a merderous psycopath and on the other hand he is a loving and protective father (who always makes poor dicisions that regarding his children)
now to the point, between the events of the 3rd and the 4th season of Arrow, Merlyn becomes the new Ra's Al Ghul (and it's pronounces Ra's in Arabic by the way, sorry but it's my mother language) leaves Nyssa in charge in Nanda Parbat and goes to south America for a really peculiar kind of business when his past catch up to him, and when I say past I mean way before anything we saw or knew from the tv series when he was a rich, trigger happy, young man.
now I've always assumed that Malcolm Merlyn as portrayed by John Barrowman is a nice and decent guy who was always one bad day away from going bad, and that bad day of course was the day his wife was murdered.
after knowing this tale about Merlyn's early adulthood (before he became who he is), well let's just say that my assumptions were put in a certain perspective, I don't think they were entirely wrong though.
I still enjoy John Barrowman's performance in the series and I greatly enjoyed this comic book series.
