The Elixir #1

Pick Your Poison

Rate this book
Normal, or not so normal, human Norma Gene is wrangled into attending yet another get-together at her best friend Callie's coven house. This time things are a little bit different for dear old Genie as she arrives to find Callie's decided to shake things up a bit, much to her dismay. With a standoffish, wary telepath, a warlock with a chip on his shoulder, a fire breathing dragoness, a surly vampire with a dour disposition, sultry demoness with a sharp tongue, a grumbling werewolf, and a bubbly witch who doesn't know the meaning of 'butt out' at the helm to round it out, what could possibly go wrong? Everything and anything, and madness ensues.
Warning: this book contains foul language, blood, stamps, a snorkel, a soup spoon, a plucky yet slightly introverted pizza girl, tons of snark, and a crapload of other stuff.

2.5 stars I have loved some of this author's previous works but, this one was hard to read. It's starts off jumpy and gets only worse with confusion growing about what the heck is going on...the hero comes out of left field as being the one the heroine will be with for the first 25-30 pages I was convinced it was going to be another character (who seems like would have made more sense and been a better fit). However, I did like aspects of the hero I just couldn't sense any real connection between him and the heroine unfortunately...it was more like they were just thrown together and then stuck with eachother.
Also, I didn't like the other characters in the series who are going to have their books next all of the female characters are catty, petty, and hard to relate to. The next heroes aren't much better seeming extremely strange and Jerkish..
This author has talent but this series is just not for me.

Loved Devi andGenre's story

Set in a world were paranormals live openly. Norma Gene, is a normal human, at almost 30, just barely adulting. Her best friend, Callie, is a witch. Once a month Callie has a party with her close friends. Genie is the only human. Spira, the dragoness , Duncan the telepath and Byron the werewolf are always friendly. Stefeno the wizard, necromancer and his frenemy, Divit, the vampire, are not so nice. Mary the succubus is outright mean. Genie puts up for the sake of her friend.
Callie's party game, Pick Your Poison, goes sideways. Genie finds herself locked in a goddy bathroom dresses as a slutty bride, with Divit, the very old and surly vampire, dresses like Elvis in white spandex. To break the spell they need to solve the riddle.
Genie finds herself mated to Divit and being converted into a vampire, when breaking the spell part two doesn't go as planned.
Genie is now struggling with all the changes. Divit never wanted a mate but now that he has one he is going to do everything to keep her. Callie and The rest of her crazy friends are going to help them both.
Fast paced and very steamy. Divit is onery, surly, arrogant, but likable. Genie is neurotic, oppositional defiant, and has a decision making disorder. She and Divit work.
Looking forward to Mary's story. Hope everyone else gets a story too.

For Norma Gene..Being the only ‘normal’ around a witch, a mind reader, a dragon shifter a nevromancer a succubus nd a vampire is hard...but at a get together when best friend and witch Callie creates a new game, the shot really hits weirdsville... Pick your poison... down the concoction and see the journey through. Even if it means death, blood and a match made in hell.

Filled with funnies be snark and mind bending mind rambles from our female character. This booknwas entertaining and light and fluffy and ticked all my boxes. I want to read more in this series and hope the second book follows soon.

Such fun

This book was so much fun. . Such a unique take a world where mythical creatures and magic walk side by side with humans. One witch whos charm goes awry at a friendly get together. Her human friend is thrusted into situation cause chaos in the group but bringing together two unlikely people in this book. But I'm sure future stories can go many directions. This was full of passion, humor, awkward romance, magic, and mythical monsters. Awesome read couldn't put it down.

For adult readers
This was a good story with a few different paranormal characters. Sallie makes a game that involves a spell, but then something goes wrong. Does it really go wrong though? This is only book 1 and this does leave some unanswered questions, but gives a HEA for one couple.

More snark than anything else....

I tried soo hard to like this, but ( deep sigh) just because you like some of a writers work doesn't mean you'll like it all ;( Honestly I just didn't like the characters, especially the h Norma Gene/Genie... This had soo many weird and warped characters in it,constantly butting in it felt like romance by committee at times and the rest ? Convoluted constant unending snark, good and witty sarcastic lines here and there be fun and show how creative and intelligent a character is,but this was over the top and felt like snark for the sake of snark and wasn't funny or even interesting in the slightest.... Deep sigh.. I don't know what to say about Divit other than I like his unusual name,as most times in one pov stories you can be left feeling like you've only one part of the story, having the other MC's thoughts, feelings and motivations with held but most of Divit's actions seemed reactionary based on ever snarky BS Norma pulled or said, soo I did and didn't feel like I missed anything w/him, well nothing important really ...
I felt like I checked put early in the book,I finish but I had to skim as well Norma most times w/her over clowning snark seemed either over think things usually jumping wrong conclusion, not waiting for an answer or just run off w/a shoot or jump first attitude and ask questions later... And for a Vamp. new or not she didn't seem all that bright,ok leaving cups of blood in styrofoam cups might be a bit odd yes and a bit to subtle for miss snarky pants but you'd think her hungry vamp senses would have told her there was blood in the cup and even quite possibly whose it was since she'd had some of Divit's blood and should know the smell of it... I wanted to like it but it felt weird and convoluted and overly snarky just for the sake of it and it just wasn't any fun,for me Norma felt like a bitchy hormonal teenage on a rampage bitchy and sulking one minute and crying and sorry the next and yet ready to go off 1/2 cocked in a heartbeat all over again never really seeming to learn a damn thing...

So-So

This story had an interesting concept, but sort of fell flat. The characters, despite the supposed mating and friendships, just didn't seem to mesh well. The conversations seemed jumpy and forced, and were often confusing. I have read previous books by this author that I really liked and I will continue to read future work, but I don't think this series will be one of them.
