Found in the non-fiction section, along with other works about canals, this is from what I can tell, a historical fiction, juvenile work about a young Irish-American orphan named Sean. Sean's father was one of the Irish who dug the Erie through the Montezuma swamp and died as a result of sickness. Sean adventures to learn about what defines him as an Irish-American and learns about the canal and the impact it had on the people and places it connected, as well as how the Irish contributed to the Erie canal.
