I started out writing paranormal romance under a few pen names that didn’t get very far in the publishing world. Later on, after years of not writing, I debuted in small press and used the name of Caitlyn McKenna. My first releases were Echoes of Angels (later re-released as The Keeper of Eternity) and Descent of Demons (later re-released as The Price of Eternity). When I began writing erotic romance, I wrote under the name of Jeya Jenson for several epublishers/small presses such as Ellora’s Cave, Extasy Books and others. Later, I was offered a contract by a NY publishing house, and neither pen name was acceptable to the editor. After batting some names around, I became Devyn Quinn. Several of my Jeya Jenson titles also made the jump to print, such as Flesh and the Devil (Kensington Aphrodisia), Before Night Falls (now published as Sins of the Flesh, Kensington Aphrodisia) and Sins of Flesh (now published as Sins of the Night, Kensington Aphrodisia).
At this time I write solely under the name of Devyn Quinn and will continue to do so in
'Fallen' by Devyn Quinn is book two in the "Kith & Kynn" series. This is the story of Adrien Roth and Cassie Wilson. I have read the previous book but feel this can be read without the other if you want too. Adrien used to be a hunter of Vampires until two vampires came to him seeking revenge for a killing of a female vampire he had done. Their revenge was to turn him into a vampire like them and they female vampire who sister he killed held him as a slave for years and years. Now in the present day Adrien has killed on of the people that turned him and now is seeking to harm the other. But along the way he meets Cassie who he help save from a abusive boyfriend/date. Cassie is rich, alone and has heath issue that make it hard for her to live what life she has. But then she meets Adrien and is attracted to him as he is to her. But they both have thing that they are dealing with that will more than likely end their lives...so they try not to become involved. I overall liked this book but I will confess that I enjoyed the first one just a little better. I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. First off, thank you for the free copy for a review. I always appreciate writers for this opportunity. I don’t like to rip anyone's work apart but I do believe in honest reviews. I do like to let people know what I like and don’t like about a book when something is a true distraction to the enjoyment of the story.
This book has a very good plot. It is a vampire/incubus type story that from its opening you can tell its not for the faint of heart. It does open with blood play and a FoM rape scene / dub con. Its not a squish for me but some fine print for people that don’t immediately realize its gorey would be great as it is rather graphic. Lots of triggers here. I will avoid spoilers besides the opening plot. I did not like the climax or the ending.
It strongly needs a trigger warning but doesn’t have one.
I will start with the short review for people that want that then I will do a more indepth review.
Plot/erotica: I like the letter elements and the Kynn are pretty cool. I’m interested in their culture. I found the book distracted from the main hero too much. Yes, its part of the series bit the description has Adrien as the main not the Carnivorns. I found them distracting overall. I think Devynn was trying to achieve empathy for them but I didn’t really like the arrangement of their information chapters I suppose. The ending felt rushes and mundane.
Drama/suspense/action: The drama is pretty good. The suspension is interrupted by the Caernivorns almost every second chapter. Adrien’s personal struggles are believable. There is a little bit of action but it was good. Action was really lacking for me in the climax/ending.
Romance/Erotica: Bland. The 3 mains and their partners all have at least erotic scene. The erotic scenes are mostly repetitive, redundant and typical of novice fanfiction. The first sex scene I didn’t even care about the couple that I found annoying. They weren’t really explored until halfway through and then I still found them irritating. Apparently everyone woman likes 2 finger touchdown as foreplay. Some of these scenes especially with how repetitive it was, were unnecessary to the plot if it wasn’t just erotica. The romance is barely believable but the motivations of the characters somewhat are. There is a lot of bloodplay to start but it does become mild besides the references to it. The opening scene contains heavy bloodplay and rape.
Triggers:
This book needs a trigger warning. Its not listed specifically as a vampire romance/erotica, just erotica/romancr but is supernatural. As the Kynn are her own species a simple warning of “This book contains depictions of rape and bloodplay” with or without “Trigger warning:” would be great. Many books include this. I am reading one right now with that. The Kynn are pretty cool but a warning would be nice.
Would I read more from this series/author:
Yes, with a few suggestions:
-More focus on the main couple
-Better introductions for characters (the second couple) that feel like they are randomly having sex
-Not everyone gets a chance to read the other books so I feel every should have a little more standalone introduction. It does happen in this but not until much further into the book
-I would read more specifically on Adrien and Cassie but only if Cassie has some plot development as a person. This is a very good introduction to this couple but Cassie
-I’d read more on Morgan
-Sex scenes need more quality over quantity
IN DEPTH REVIEW:
I like in-depth reviews so yes this is a long one with critique. I will include only one spoiler at the very end with my opinion on it.
Noticed influences:
(these are my opinions anyhow)
-A Midsummer Night Dream (narrative/plotting character)
-Twilight (possibly, especially since this is a repub),
-Brahm Stokers Dracula
-Manga: Erotic Fairytales series (narrative/plotting character)
Plot:
Actually pretty good, original, promising. Even if its purposely shocking at the beginning and takes off with a bang, it is watered down with the constant interference of the villains personal life and a stock character love interest. The end felt sudden and disappointing compared to the set up.
Technicals:
About 66% in (thanks ereader) through I felt like the author just said “fuck it, let's finish this.” It emphasizes that this romance/erotica can’t decide if its a romance or an erotica. It goes from vulgar smut to describing lady parts softly literally from on paragraph to the next. Sadly it was the main couple. In general the pairing of the main with the love interest, combined with the story focussing more on the villain’s personal life than the hero’s makes me feel that the author cared more about that side couple than the mains. The mains felt abandoned and the love interest was laughable (see characters). The plot was ok, it was slapped together with a narrative type character pulling the strings to get the best outcome for everyone (kind of like a Midsummer Nights Dream) and the romance felt rushed. The ending was very fantastical and fairytale like. Its a bit of a great build up to a greater disappointment. Maybe I just like old school fairytales over predictable Disney endings.
Characters:
From hunter to remorseful creature, Victorian slayer to modern biker “goth”. We do have a great leading male character who opens the book with his past as an occult-creature/entity slayer. He is violently abused and turned against his will into one of the Kynn, an incubus/vampire/succubus creature of the night. Adrien/AJ is first into a sex slave (which is not severely graphic but is brought up a lot throughout the book) and then finds his freedom. So begins the plot of his revenge. Being turned against your will is a nono so the man who turned him is next on his list.
My next fav character is the “entity” probably a demon, Morgan. He is just a side character but more interesting than the other characters in the story. He is the chaotic neutral and acquaintance to both “sides”. Who doesn’t love a chain smoking, alcoholic, ancient Irish whatever he is?
The love interest, Cassie, is a wooby in the story. She has a lust for life, I’m going to die anyways attitude and its almost like you have to try to hard to like her. She has everything but her health and its mentioned every three seconds. This is where Fallen reminds me that most romance is marketed to “white upper class women” no racism intended. I found her rather annoying and her relationship with Adrien is very fantastical. I don’t know how he can handle her boasting and talking about exes and riches. There only connection is opposites attract. She is the embodiment of damsel in distress mixed with clinging vine even if she has a the big heart that she obviously and (and its overstated constant) can afford. Her naivety to what's going on in the climax of the novel made her come across as pathetic, to me anyways.
Lastly the Carnivorns, complete with faux Brit mannerisms. To quote Supernatural, “Are the most feared thing (Dean and Sam) have ever faced before, WASPS.” Here we have “I’m not evil I just did something to teach you a lesson and it got out of hand” and both are “not Bella and Edward.” I have not read the previous book but this book mostly focused on this couple, the “villains” that are as rich as the love interest and even more irritating. We have a stereotypical pregnant woman, just the vampire version, thirsting for blood and has the emotional range of a can of tuna (not Bella right?) especially at the end of the book. Firstly we don't know much about them so why start the first/first memorable sex scene as another squick for some people, especially in erotica, with awkward slap-slap-kiss pregnant sex. Only later on (what, past 50% of the book?) is their union explained and did I barely give a shit about either of them. It seriously felt like this novel just paid way more attention to these two than the main characters without giving a reason why it should. It is book 2 of a series but if the author cares so much about these two characters, why not give them a better introduction earlier? They don’t get any more interesting at the end. Devon is a decent villain but his wife (what was her name?) is another horrible female stereotype.
SPOILER and final thought. This book is overall an okay romance, a full sized novel, an okay erotica but the ending for me really sucked. The ending was okay and anticlimactic. I’m glad the tormented hero figures all his stuff out at the end but it was so bland and hurried. If you like “No One Dies and Everybody Wins” then this is for you but I like a little tragedy and action in a plot. The ending was very fluffly for an emo /goth type novel.
Okay. First the good news. There's a couple of really interesting characters going on. Would love to see a LOT more of Morgan. Very sexy, mysterious character. The plot just plunges right into the action, which is very nice. Lots of atmosphere. In fact, that's where Quinn runs into problems. There's TOO FREAKING MUCH atmosphere. This book is so over-written. There's not a cliche or adjective left unused. Sometimes, it's a good idea to let the reader form their own pictures. I think it takes a certain amount of trust between writer and reader to do so. Quinn needs to learn to let go a little on that front. The other problem is the climax and resolution of the plot- too abrupt. Not at all believable with these characters. I really wanted things to work out, and they did, but this wasn't the way to do it. It's as if Quinn reached her word limit and truncated the rest of the story.
There's a great world here. And some great characters. It's too bad the writing hasn't caught up with that.
Following its prequel, Sins of the Flesh, Sins of the Night jumps forward a bit in time to the final stages of pregnancy for the main heroine from the first book, Rachel Carnavorn, with her husband, Devon’s child. The Kynn have never known a child to be born within their “race” and Rachel is struggling through the process. To add even more stress to her condition, another vampire has popped up… and old “friend” of Devon’s named Adrien Roth. Adrien once hunted the Kynn, and one kill he did succeed at was the murder of Devon’s previous love, Ariel. In order to get revenge on Adrien, Devon had Ariel’s sister Lilith turn him into one of their kind, thinking that would be the worst thing that could happen to him. However, Lilith went beyond that and tortured Adrien for weeks, causing him to want revenge. And that revenge he wants to take out on Devon’s new wife, Rachel, and their unborn child. Even more action-packed then Sins of the Flesh, Devyn Quinn really heats things up in this second novel of the Kynn. Not only is the reader left to wonder how things will turn out with the first Kynn birth, but readers are left wondering throughout the book if there even WILL be a Kynn birth, since both Rachel’s life and the baby’s is in jeopardy due to Adrien’s character. While reading, I formed a love/hate relationship with Adrien’s character. I sympathized with him for the torture he had endured in his past, yet he instigated some of that with the murder of Ariel. And then while seeking out revenge of his own, he stumbles across a woman that he is instantly attracted to, and I feel hope that maybe she can help soothe things over given the circumstances. Sins of the Night is a bit of a rollercoaster ride all the way through and as any ride, it came to an end way too quickly! Looking forward to seeing where Quinn may take the Kynn in the future. Highly recommend to all readers! Contains: Adult Language, Adult Situations, Graphic Sex, Minor Violence Review by Rhonda Wilson
I got this book from net gallery for an honest review.
Adrien, is the shadow hunter that killed Ariel, Devon's sire. Adrien was captured by Devon and Lilith: he was bound and subjected to various sexual acts and was then turned into a vampire against his will.
He killed Lilith and has patiently waited for the right time to settle the score with Devon. Devon is happily married to Rachel who is pregnant with their twins - their blissful life is about to be shaken up.
Devon is afraid not for his own safety but that of his wife and unborn children. Will he succeed in protecting them? Will his family pay the price for what he did in the past?
Will Adrien carry out his revenge or will he get sidetracked by Cassie?
I loved the first book Seduced - the chemistry between Devon and Rachel was intense and insane. In my opinion, the chemistry between Adrien and Cassie was lacking. Adrien's past overshadows everything. Their relationship lacked the gradual buildup which was a shame. I truly sympathised with Adrien, he went through so much during his capture. The author did a fab job capturing the intensity of his ordeal and his inner battle to embrace what he has become.
I did enjoy the book, it was interesting and intriguing to watch everything unfold. I would definitely recommend the book.
Adian used to be a vampire hunter. Then two vampires - Devon and Lilith came after him for killing a female vampire - Ariel and turned Adian into a vampire. Ariel’s sister kept Adian as a slave for a long time’ Then Adian gets a chance and kills Lilith and goes on a quest to kill Devon. Devon now has a wife and an unborn child and hopes he can protect them. On the way to find Devon Adian saves a human girl- Cassie from an abusive situation. Cassie is rich and alone and is also attracted to Adian and he to her. I liked this story quiet a bit. It was a complex story and had a problem deciding who tp root for. The ending was not believable and I would have liked that different. The writing also seemed a little off to me. So I liked this but it wasn’t one of my favorites. I would have liked to given it a 3.5 I did like the ins and outs. I received an Arc of this story for an honest review.
I have to say in the beginning it was really hard to get into this book, however, I pushed through as much as I could. I will say I liked the book once it got passed Adrien being stuck on his past. I also have to say that even though I liked the book, it is not one of my favorites. I didn't like Adrien's character at all, I have to say my favorite character was Morgan. Most people would say I'm crazy but I'd rather see more of him next time.
The book it self was written exceptionally well, I just didn't care for the story too much. The ending was good, but could've added a little more to it. I know the author is a great writer, and I'm sure some of the other books are great; this one just didn't get my attention.
I guess I really didn't know what to expect. The book was very erotic (which I expected it to be) but the storyline definitely caught me off guard. I loved Adrien's character and the type of man he was portrayed to be. I was very dissapointed with how the revenge fixed itself. I expected more but maybe the moral is that love conquers and solves all. The book was easy to read and kept my attention to the very end. Definitely interested in reading the other Kith & Lynn books.
This novel had me torn in all different directions. Right of the bat the author throws us into the action with Adrien’s turning. I didn’t expect it to be so sexual, but within pages, I was had to stop to take a breath. Half of the time, I wasn’t sure who I was rooting for, however. Both the characters and story were so complex, there was no black and white about it. An intense read to be sure.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed reading this. I can't wait to go back and read book 1 to this series. You will enjoy reading about Adrian and Cassie. I just can't wait to read more.
A vampire hunter is captured by his prey, but rather than killing him they turn him into one of them. After finally escaping their torture he goes for revenge. . . then meets his supposed soulmate. There’s long chapters with the antagonist and his wife, as though trying to humanize him, make him seem like he’s just protecting his family rather than a monster deserving of his fate. From what I gather he was the protagonist of the first in this series, so that’s probably for the new readers like me. For a rich girl Cassie is quite likeable, as is the wife, but the guys were mostly unlikeable; the antihero/deus ex machina was the most interesting, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s featured in the next book. All in all, an okay fantasy story, erotic in very small does.
