An ARC of this book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Jody Pardo and Be My Book Boyfriend for the opportunity.
First of all I would like to mention how much I enjoyed this author's voice. Right from the start I found myself sinking into the cadence and flow of her writing style and I noticed several times throughout where I thought a particular internal thought was quite poignant simply because of the way it was written.
I thought the story was good overall and I liked Peter. Once he and Christina were together as a couple I thought they worked well but the lead up was a little odd. There was little to no descriptive indication that they were attracted to each other. Peter even calls her 'Shorty' to start off with, which felt to me like he was lumping her in with 'My sister' (sorry, but this particular reference was used so often in the first half of the book to refer to Beth, I actually forgot what her name was) and sister status. I even dismissed her as the love interest at first because there were literally NO bells being rung. Peter has no thoughts about Christina's attractiveness or that he might even be interested, or welcome the advances she makes towards him on a later night out. He just takes what he's offered, when there's no reason for it. That said, I enjoyed the romantic times, particularly his and Christina's foreplay conversations.
As for the rest of Peter's story, while I did find it a little disjointed, with no rhyme or reason to the flashbacks, nightmares or eventual conclusion, his attempts to readjust to civilian life were really well done and an interesting insight into the life of a returning soldier.
So, overall I enjoyed it, loved the writing style, but would have appreciated a little more attention to detail and thought put in to the cohesiveness of the story as a whole. A good read.
