The Iron Knight is the fourth book in the De Russe Legacy, but what is really nice about Kathryn Le Veque's style of writing her series is that you don't need to read the books in order of the series. She writes each book to be read as a stand alone if you want. This book was part of the Audible Romance Package and I really had a blast with this book and like usual its packed with so many unique elements that only Le Veque brings to the pages of her stories. What I really like about Le Veque is how well written her books are, they are so rich and detailed and such endearing characters.
The Iron Knight begins with Lucien De Russe, who is also known as the "Iron Knight" he has never been injured in a battle and goes into one with full speed. Lucien has lost his wife and tears through battles and wars hoping to lose himself from the pain and grief that has haunted him and has put a rift in the relationship between himself and his children. A grown son who won't speak to him and a spoiled girl who he can't control. But on one fateful day in 1410 A.D. he is injured and at forty he is to retire his battle armor. Now the king has decided to reward him with a young bride, one that Lucien has no desire to marry. While out on a ride he hears some screams and finds two women stuck in a carriage that is sinking in a lake with a battle between soldiers and bandits. Without thinking about it he rescues the two women and everyone flees instantly including the women's escort.
Lady Sophina de Gournay has been living with her father ever since she became widowed and raising her daughter all by herself. But then her father, who has recently remarried wants his daughter out of his home, he is tired of her presence. And so he arranges a marriage for her and now Sophina will need to remarry once again. But on her way to her intended's home, she and her daughter almost drown from an attack. And the men escorting her abandons her but there is one man who rescues Sophina and her daughter from drowning or worse.
Sophina and Lucien are drawn to each other, from a single ride back to Lucien's home sparks fly between them and its an instant love connection for them. Both Lucien and Sophina are mature adults, they have both experiences love matches in their late marriages and they recognize the signs of how powerful their connection is. But there are some obstacles standing in their way including the fact that they are both betrothed to other people and are both people of honor. But Lucien has found love again and he isn't the Iron Knight for nothing, he will find a way to have Sophina and her sweet daughter with him....
The Iron Knight was so wonderful to listen to and I first off want to give my shout out to the narrator: Brad Wills. I just love and adore this narrator so very much. Now I know that not everyone loves him like I do, but he has such diverse talent and the way he can add in multiple characters so flawlessly is something you don't see from many narrators. And he did such a wonderful job with implementing the voices of all the characters that come into play with this story.
I will admit that before I started this book, I had some apprehension for it mostly because I knew that there would be some conflicts outside the couple, of a more "forbidden" type nature and I wasn't sure if I was in the right frame of mind to read a book like this with this trope because I do need to be in the mood for it. However I can say that this book ROCKED!! I don't know why I doubt Le Veque's work because its amazing. I may not be a fan of her covers, but the books are amazing. This is where you ignore the covers and read the books because they are some of the most well written medieval romances out there. I know some readers that have hesitated in reading this author because of the cover designs and I am telling you TRY KATHRYN LE VEQUE out and you won't be disappointed. Both her physical/ebooks and audiobooks are superb.
What I found most interesting was the family bonds in this book. We have the close tie between Sophina and Emmeline. They understand each other and have the type of mother daughter relationship that anyone could envy. Then we have the relationship that Lucien has with his daughter Susanna. Now Susanna was injured at birth and now struggles in walking. But she is very spoiled and mean and even abusive to the servants who are afraid of a little girl. But the hero is at a loss as to what he is doing wrong with her. But what was really amazing...is the moment that Sophina comes into play something changes with Susanna slowly. Then we have another set of women that you end up falling in love with as well. Lady Juno is Lucien's intended who is accompanied by her father and her cousin Aricia. I just loved the parts that June and Aricia play in this story and the aspect of Aricia being a transgender character. This is not something I don't think I have ever encountered in a historical romance before. And it was so interesting and I am so glad that Le Veque wrote this character in. I do love how gracious Lucien and Sophina are with Aricia and welcoming her and accepting her.
We do have some villains in the story, the main villain being Sophina's fiancee who is a thief and a crook but has remained innocent of charges because he has family connections to the Queen. However, we see in this book how evil this man is and will work anything to his advantage but he gets his justful end that he deserves. I found it very interesting to see how the plot played out overall. There is such a focus on relationships in this book both romantic and platonic friendships. There is such depth of dynamics that come into play with this book. Now for the romance....the ROMANCE folks was simply fantastic here. I just love the building of their relationship. The laughter and teasing that comes into play at the beginning, and the emotion and intimacy that grows with each chapter.
I found The Iron Knight to be captivating and sweeps you back through time, with history and vibrant emotion and a tale that weaves its way through your soul and leaves you with a smile!! STUNNINGLY PENNED!!
This featured 40 year old knight/ baron Sir Lucien who rescued 35 year old ageless beauty Lady Sophina (both widowed) & her dtr from drowning. Honorable Lucien oversaw a castle of 2000 knights. Both leads were promised to someone else. Lucien thought 17 YO Lady Juno too young for him and Sophina's intended turned out to be dishonorable.
The story had love, forgiveness & 2 baddies. The violence sequence was too long and OTT for my taste. This had a tricky sex scene- how did Lucien accomplish this?
Sir Lucien de Russe, the "Iron Knight, has really never recovered from a devastating injury he received at his last battle which, literally, forced him to "hang up his spurs." Born and bred for battle, the Iron Knight has also never gotten over the death of his first wife who died while giving birth to their daughter. Susanna was hurt during the birthing and cannot walk. Not knowing how to deal with his daughter's handicap and still racked with guilt over his inability to protect his wife, he showers Susanna with gifts instead of his time and love. As a result, has created a spoiled, uncontrollable brat. In addition, he hasn't seen his son in years, having sent him away to foster, withdrawing his attention and love from him as well. Nope, he would never win the "Father of the Year" award. King Henry, believing he is rewarding his favored knight, has betrothed Sir Lucien to a very young lady, much against Sir Lucien's wishes. His betrothed and her father are journeying to his castle to make the match.
Lady Sophina de Gournay, a widow with a lovely 16 year-old daughter, has had a marriage arranged for her by her unfeeling father. He considers Lady Sophina and her daughter a burden, and can't wait to get them out of his home where his new wife now resides. He arranges a betrothal to an unscrupulous, low life peer who only worships money. Lady Sophina has no idea what she is facing and is being escorted by her bethroth's men to an uncertain future. It is here our story begins.
What a great book! Two mature adults, a widow and a widower, both betrothed against their wills to others, meeting by chance and getting a second shot at love. To top it off, circumstances were stacked against them and continuing to grow by the moment. A mad man, a greedy, power crazed future father-in-law, secrets and lies abound. Every which way they turned, an impediment to their love and future happiness stood in their way. Yet, with a maturity and a wisdom that only comes with life experience, they were able to hold it together and face every obstacle together. Oh yes, and there I was still a nervous wreck as things seemed to spiral totally out of control as the sequence of events kept becoming more perilous. I loved it.
There are so many different side scenarios and stories also happening in this wonderful book. They pull you right in and grab your interest as well. That is a sign of well developed, interesting supporting characters. I found myself totally immersed in Colton and Emmaline side romance, as well as Lady Juno and Aricia. A suprise visit from Weston de Royans and Lady Amalie from "The Lady Born" was most welcomed and fun to briefly learn about their children.
This is a heartwarming love story, with lessons in tolerance and understanding as well. I just loved it.
This is truly an amazing story. It is different because both the hero and heroine are older. He is almost 40 and she is 35. They are both widowers and they both have children. They both had previously found love in their lives and lost it with the death of their spouses. For me, this wonderful tale is about...second chances, realizing that love knows no age limit, and the enormity of tolerance and the difference it can make in the lives of all involved.
Lucien de Russe and Sophina de Gournay are two strong characters who will lighten your heart.
All the reviewers have given a description of the story so I feel that has been covered. I just wanted to give my perspective and feelings about The Iron Knight. It is a Le Veque keeper for me.
Mature love at its best. I love stories with grown up heroes and heroines. This story hit my sweet spot.
Lucien deRusse, a legendary knight has hung up his spurs. He has many regrets, but his greatest regret is the poor job he has done as a father after the death of a beloved wife. His family life is in shambles. He feels the aches and pains of a man who has spent his life in battle. He feels every one of his 40 summers in his body and spirit.
Lady Sophina de Gournay, a young widow, and her young daughter, Emmaline, are unwanted. Her father has sent her on a mission to be inspected for marriage by an unknown lord and virtually wipes his hands of the situation. Without fortune, she has few options before her.
A chance meeting throws these two souls together and the chemistry is palpable at first sight. It was wonderful. I'd love to read more stories like this.
Not even sure how I finished this and that's unusually critical coming from me especially about a historical romance. The concept of a medieval knight saving a lady rouses the romantic in me but there were so many issues with the writing, I couldn't even enjoy that notion. It's almost like no one proofed the book ~ and if someone did proof the book, they should lose their job. Missing prepositions, poor grammar, typos and a story that had potential but came across as written by an extreme amateur. Any anticipation I had at the beginning of the story, was very quickly extinguished. ugh. I hate when that happens. I cannot recommend at all.
In a very odd way I thoroughly enjoyed reading Iron Knight. It's Medieval light, full of truly hilarious moments, and while simply written - toward the end the writing becomes a bit overly simple, but all in all it was a passing delight wondering what absurd thing would happen next. Strange to say the plot is not bad at all.
As usual, Kathryn Le Veque's characters were brought to life in an interesting and entertaining story. I would have given 5 stars if there weren't so many typos. The book is definitely in need of a proof reader.
Lucien de Russe who was called the Iron Knight was in the middle of battle when his friend Richard le Bec came to him to tell him that Lord Rokeby wanted to speak with him. As they move to where he was dodging fighting men as they went arrows started flying towards them. Lucien was hit, he gets up and walks but finally falls and lay unconscious. le Bec yells and men come running.
Lady Sophina Seavington de Gournay had been widowed for 6 years and living in her father’s home in Andover. Her father was upset that he was supporting his daughter and grandaughter and was hoping for a marital contract. Her father never made it a secret that he felt burden with them and Sophia’s daughter Emmaline who was 16 years old had grown up thinking no one wanted her or her mother. Her father remarried and her step mother hated her. So when a potential betrothal came up with St Michael du Ponte a wealthy merchant with a prosperous import business she was sent to meet him. There ends up being a fight with the men escorting her and men that came upon them, the carriage bolts away towards the lake.
Lucien does not want to meet Lord de Saix’s daughter, King Henry had gifted her to him as a betrothal and they were on their way to castle Spelthorne. He gets on his horse and rides away to clear his head. He loved his home but felt it was a hell also with his daughter Susanna Isabelle de Reyne de Russe who had been born with a weak spine and legs as a result of the difficult birth that had killed her mother. She ruled the roost but not in a good way. He continued on and decided maybe to go to the lake that was near when he heard screaming and saw a carriage go into the lake. He bolted on his horse and jumps in to save them. Their beginning.
This book centers around Sir Lucien de Russe, called the Iron Knight because it seemed as though he couldn’t be injured in a battle. As an older knight, he is getting closer to forty and has seen a lot over his many years in battle. Then he is seriously injured during a battle, and has to give up his sword and spurs and retire to live in peace. Physically he’ll never be the same, mentally he feels dead. Lucien hasn’t been the same since losing his wife in childbirth. His daughter was born with a spine issue and therefore is unable to walk and is quite the terror. He also has a son who he hasn’t spoke with in years. The king decided Lucien needed a wife so he pledges him to an heiress. As Lucien is off riding to clear out his head, he sees a robbery in progress off in the distance as he gets close he hears screaming and saves both mother and daughter. This book had an amazing storyline. The character development was steady. There was never a lull in the book. There were some twists and unexpected turns. I really enjoyed reading this book.
I couldn't give this novel 5 stars just because the book before it, The Dark One, was so amazingly good, that The Iron Knight couldn't live up to it. However, this was another captivating story by Kathryn Le Veque, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her knights are spectacular and Lucien de Russe fit right in with the other members of the de Russe clan. I was riveted to this second chance historical romance where there was never a dull moment. Sophina and Lucien bring each other back to life after they have each suffered loss and grief. They experience a deep connection and steamy passion. Along with a cast of interesting characters, this tale comes alive under the brilliant writing of Le Veque. Her details of the period add extraordinary realism and I enjoy her descriptions not only of the characters, but of the clothing and the settings. My only disappointment was that there were more than the usual amount of typos and errors on my kindle edition.
I loved this book, it has everything in it that you would want. Love, romance, humour and betrayal! This story is about finding love again after past tragedy and realising that one is never to old to be in love. Sir Lucien De Russe and Lady Sophina de Gournay make a wonderful couple in this tale of understanding, as their two families come together with their own individual stories. The surrounding characters are also very interesting and Kathryn really shows the pressures young women had put upon them in order to improve their families wealth and titles. There is so much warmth and emotion, compassion and love in this story, it is extremely moving. I thought that the Epilogue was really emotional and really warms ones heart. Sir Lucien and Lady Sophina are extremely likeable characters and I think this is because of their age and what they have both separately been through in their stories. A wonderful read!
Sir Lucien de Russe has been fighting King Henry's wars for many years, and is getting tired of it.The loss of his wife in childbirth years ago caused him to put his personal life behind him and throw himself into battles he could win. Now with a son who hates him and a very naughty, disabled daughter he's not really enjoying his retirement from fighting.
Widowed Lady Sophina de Gournay and her daughter are on their way to meet a man her father wants her to marry. To be truthful all her father really wants is to be freed from taking care of them.
This is a medieval romance with our main characters being a little older than normal. Both have loved and lost in the past and thought that side of life was over for them. Our hero had a reputation as an invincible warrior and our heroine is a self confident woman with nothing to lose.
An action packed story with a lot of danger and some complicated family dynamics.
The story line of this book is great, Kathryn doesn't disappoint! However, whoever did the proof reading and editing of this book has let her down greatly. Some of the grammer is appalling, with misspellings and sentences that appear to have been repeated. I had to reread quite a bit to make sense of some parts of the story. Shoddily presented for a writer as good as Kathryn. I don't know how putting books on kindle works but surely more care should be taken by whoever oversaw this, after a writer working so hard to produce a book, this presentation is disrespectful to say the least!! Spoilt it for me 😔
Dramanya biarpun ribet, sama sekali gak terasa seperti sinetron. Malah enak diikuti dan bikin penasaran melulu. Overall, it's a page turner.
Great book Lucien de Russe is know as the iron knight when injured in battle he forced to stay out of battle due to permanent damage to his body. Upon avoiding his betrothed arrival he takes a ride and rescues a lady nd her daughter from drowning in a carriage during an ambush. He give her shelter and seema to come alive again. He aint young and don't want a wife young enough to bw his daughter. With issues of his ended betrothed and the lady he wants to be wed betrothed will he have his wish
Of course there is romance with all the challenges to reach love and happiness, but in this read there are unexpected things about characters that are revealed. With this book one could say to expect the unexpected. A fine family is broken apart by grief and brought back together by love. Friends are found and treasured. What more can one ask for.
A very rewarding and fast pace read. It is always good to know second chances are rare happenings but Lucien and lady r Russo found each other in the same circumstances and a wild and abiding love found them. Love is best when given with the heart. Well written and splines to read and I would recommend it whole heartedly. 5 stars all the way. Thanks Ms Veque for writing great books.
A forty year old knight becomes injuried in a battle for the king and is forced to retire. Becoming sheriff he finds his life dull, but realizes he was tired of constant battles. Rescuing a Lady and her daughter, he falls in love. Complications of both having contracts for marriage to others, he is determined to have her as his wife at any cost. It is a reading pleasure to have older adults in a love story. I would like to read more. Le Veque never disappoints.
I have read most of the stories that Ms.Le Veque has written and I have found myself falling into her well rounded stories with such 3 dimensional characters as time spent on such long ago times that still resonate to today, as personal preferences go I lost my number 1 favourite as "The Wolf " followed very closely as my number 2 " The Iron Night". Look and find these two wonderfully immersing series that you will not soon forget !!!
Loved loved loved Lucien de Russe's story and Lady Sophina de Gournay with their second chance at mature love after having had love early in their lives and lost it! This is a beautiful story with many twists and unusual plots unfolding within the main story itself to keep you forever turning the pages to see what will happen next! Couldn't put it down (although it does need a grammar clean up, I wouldn't let that stop you from reading this great story!)
Beautiful love story about love the second time around. Both our hero and heroine have loved before and lost both their lives to death. After years of grief and loneliness love surprises them again when they meet and fall in love. However, they have many obstacles to overcome before happily ever after.
I don't know how I missed it. I have read all around it and never picked it up. The story of falling in love...being willing to fight and die for that love. It gives me reason to have hope for the world.
Although I love LeVeque's books. I hate her editor. Missing words, misspelled words...so detracting. There were more than usual in this book.
Story is a bout a older man who full in love with a woman who has been married before. The Lord is a great man who every one call the iron knight. He has lost his wife in child bearing and he didn't know how to live with so much sadden. I give this story a five star rating.
KLV has another excellent book to re-read! Her storyline seems to always take twists and turns in the plot. Sophina and Lucien are both strong characters and were definitely made for each other! Won't give any spoilers, so you'll have to read this romantic love story yourself.
Another great book by Le Vecque. This one is so full of heart. The love of Lucien de Russe and his Lady Sophina de Gournay is a sweet story full of a lot of angst in getting to the part where they can manage to be together. This book made me want to actually KNOW Luciene because he seems to be such a great man. Loved this book!
It was a great story but is full of errors in the printing that are annoying. Obviously no one proof read the go finished product. The mistakes would not be caught by spell check. They are articles that are left out of the wrong pronoun or a letter left off that makes another word, example "The for They or he for she". Very annoying indeed!😡
Captures the reader and maintains reader interest until the end. Many grammatical errors, but a good reader can persevere because of the many plot paths the author has contrived . Consistently demands you follow to pursue even your own detective and instinctive meanderings.
I liked everything this book had to tell. Anger, hatred, compassion and live. Details all over. I think some details wouldn't have been discussed in the time period. But it made this story better and nicer for all.
