Crimson Hero takes volleyball and bents it like Beckham in a story that pits traditional values against the love of the game. All that matters to 15 year old Nobara Sumiyoshi is volleyball; she is an awesome volleyball player with big time ambitions. But sometimes it seems like a girl just can not get a break in the competitive world of high school volleyball.
Book: Crimson Hero, Vol. 3 Author: Mitsuba Takanashi Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
I am still having fun with this series. It is one of those things that puts me in a good mood. It’s lighthearted but also deals with some deeper issues.
I will try to keep my review as spoiler-free as possible, but since this is the third volume in a series, there may be spoilers for earlier volumes.
Nobara has done it. She has done the impossible and returned the girls’ volleyball team to her school. She is in love. However, she does not notice the bigger picture. There is a lot of pressure on the team and the others are crumbling. She is too, but she doesn’t see it that way. Her life is volleyball and you have to work for what you want to be good at. However, her love for the game forces her to make some difficult choices and she finds herself back in the world that she has tried to get away from.
Norbora is one of those characters to whom I cannot help but be drawn. She is fierce and determined. She will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She wants to make it on her own. Yet, she is starting to realize that she cannot make it on her own. She needs help. She doesn’t have a lot of time either, which causes her to make a difficult choice. We can see how much this choice haunts her and bothers her. Yet, she knows what she wants and loves. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants. It is this focus that makes me very interested in her character.
I like that we have a sports book that is focused on girls. So many sports books and movies focus on boys. This is a nice change. It shows that girls' sports do matter just as much as boys and she is treated as such.
I am still really enjoying this series and cannot wait to see what happens next.
Rena gets muscular pain; Nobara feels guilty for spring only about herself and not carrying about the rest of team, especially Rena.
They get signed up for a practice match and in to of that are having to pay approximately 100$ for activity fees; Nobara's mother refuses--so does her aunt--to give Nobara any money. Nobara then decided to use all she has left for living expenses and food to pay the fee. The guys notice Nobara hardly eating at the dorm and go out of their way to make her food from their own stash.
Nobara gets notified of her younger sister's informal introduction with a man, a prominent man's son. Souka is told to go. She calls Nobara before her practice match that she's scared and needs help. Nobara dashes of to find her with Kuushin in tow, effectively canceling his date.
After saving Souka, Nobara rushes back to the game. She arrives almost half an hour late and has to apologize sincerely to everyone.
Throughout the entire volume, Nobara has had some short dokie-dokie moments with Kuushin whether it's her venting or wallowing in self pity, he is there to be her sounding board and lift her spirits in his own form of brash self help talk.
Everyone is practicing in the gym and Nobara gets told about Kuushin's girlfriend being outside the gym to see them play/practice? Eventually letting her curiosity win, she bumps into Kaibuki on her way out. He questions her and reminds her that she already said she didn't like Kuushin when he asked. He stops her from accidentally interrupting Kuushin with his girlfriend and both subsequently watch them interact.
**Contains Spoilers** Nobara, the eldest who left home, has no plans of taking over the restaurant to become a hostess/mistress and entertain rich guests. Souka, Nobara's sister, is left to care for Seiryu and a pervert comes to talk about marrying Souka who is only in the ninth grade.
Even though Nobara isn't the captain of the team, she is the soul of it who put together the team that was impossible to and she is now the ace which is the most important person in a volleyball team.
Souka calls Nobara to save her just before her match is starting with another school. She saves Souka but ends up getting late for the match and apologizes. They still lose the match though. :/
Souka watches her play and then Nobara says she's going to help and take over the family business but only after three years until she graduates. Til then, she should b e allowed to do whatever she wants. Souka supports her and their mom agree.
I like the Osaka that plays volleyball and without glasses.
The thing I loved in this volume was how Nobara acts like a grown up, and manages everything in a timely manner, taking responsibility of the family business and continuing her passion to become one of the top international volleyball players.
N.E.W.T. - Charms Exceeded Expectations: Read a comic/manga.
I'm not a fan of stories where sports have a major impact, apparently. Maybe it'd work if they practiced taekwondo or played handball (aka sports I know about and have practiced them)? Who knows. But I'm pretty sure those who like this kind of stories would enjoy this one.
Third book in the series, and I love how a lot of the story is primarily focused on the volleyball and not as much on the romance part (yet). Don’t get me wrong, I do like romance, but alot of sports romance tend to lose the “sport” aspect pretty quickly. But I appreciate that this series gives attention to both things.
I can honestly say that this is my favourite manga series ever; and I've read a lot of manga. In this book, Nobara has finally found enough members to create an official volleyball team. She was extremely excited until many problems started to come her way. One of her teammates told her to care about their feelings just as much as volleyball, she had to call home for money (she ran away from home), and I think that she even fell in love for the first time. With so many things happening all at once, Nobara was scared. No matter what happened, Nobara stood up for herself and never got down.
Since I already read the 1st and 2nd book of this series, I decided that continuing on would be a good idea. I've picked up many manga books, but this series was one of the few that I really enjoyed and wanted to complete.
I finished this book because I made a goal to complete the whole series before school ends. I love Nobara's personality and I love everything that the author has included. Manga isn't like other books in my opinion, it gives you the visual effect that the author was thinking of and I'm the type of person who is interested in that. It's also quite short so I'm glad that it wouldn't take me a long time.
I would recommend this book to any athletes that have obstacles in their way of pursuing their dreams. Nobara gives everyone a good example of what to do when you're in that situation and I'm glad that I know what to do now.
This volume should have been volume two. I like that it's starting to focus more on the girls team and their relationship rather then the boys team being jerks. I'm also a huge fan of the family dynamic making another appearance. Her little sister is so cute!
The best volume so far, and it's weird how much this reminds me of Nana even though the stories are totally different. But I liked this very much. I would have given 5/5 but the romance seemed to happen a little too fast.
