About the author

Nick Arnold is the author of the award winning series, Horrible Science and Wild Lives. Arnold's first published works appeared as a result of a project he was working on at the University of North London, when he was trying to teach young children. A positive review was written about him, and he started to write the "Horrible Science" books. His books are illustrated by Tony De Saulles.

Horrible Science là series sách khoa học về các chủ đề khác nhau như vật lý, hóa học, sinh học,… và được trình bày một cách hài hước, thú vị. Điện học cuốn hút đến tóe lửa là một cuốn như vậy, về chủ đề “điện” (rõ ràng!). Nó giống với sách giáo khoa ở mục đích truyền tải kiến thức, nhưng cách trình bày, giải thích như thế nào lại trái ngược hoàn toàn. Cuốn sách tập trung giải thích các khái niệm tĩnh điện, điện tích,… và đưa ra các ví dụ liên quan. Thêm vào đó, cách hình thành sấm sét, cách hoạt động của cột thu lôi, pin, nam châm hay điện trong các cơ thể sống, lần thử nghiệm đầu tiên của máy sốc điện lên người,… cũng đều được nhắc tới một cách khéo léo. Không chỉ có các kiến thức, nó cũng giới thiệu về các “siêu sao” ngành nghiên cứu cùng các phát minh “gây sốc” của họ như Benjamin Franklin chọn cách thử nghiệm khá “liều”: thả diều khi trời mưa có sấm sét, hay cuộc đấu giữa Galvani và Volta được tác giả dựng lại qua những bức thư có độ cà khịa cao. Thỉnh thoảng sẽ có phần câu hỏi và trả lời xuất hiện để người đọc hứng thú hơn, và đúng là hứng thú thật khi nhiều câu hỏi tưởng như không thể đúng được lại chính là đáp án. Phần câu hỏi lên tầm cao mới khi không những hỏi người đọc mà còn xui họ đi hỏi các thầy cô của mình để test trình độ chuyên môn =)). Có học rồi thì phải tới hành, ngoài hành thầy cô theo nghĩa bóng, người đọc có thể tự thực hành được ngay tại nhà bằng những thí nghiệm dễ làm và an toàn cho cả những bạn nhỏ cấp một.

Kiến thức cơ bản, bổ ích, dễ hiểu, không nhàm chán, đây chắc chắn là món quà sinh nhật toẹt dời cho người em của bạn đó :D

This book contains a lot of information about electricity so I could know more about electricity. This book had may ideas with special details. I recommend this book for students who want to know more about electricity or probably the students who want to specialize the electronics. However, this book's illustration was bad. Usually, the books with the pictures are better than the books without any picture. But, this book makes its quality decrease. Also, its hard to understand when I saw the picture about electron in this book. In fact, this book's sentences are interesting and fun, but this book's illustrations make it bad.

I think that this book is full of knowledge and is to be read by anyone, of all age, and have an interest on physics, this book is about electricity and the level is intermediate, there are some more advanced experiments, it also tells you all the materials you will need in order to perform the experiment. On the other hand, there are an array of questions which challenge your knowledge from time to time, they are creative and interesting.

This is a shocking (HA HA HA) book. I love jokes so that's why I put them in my book reports. Oh, plus, this book is about ElEcTRICity. But now I know that lightning can give you a chemical burn - so don't go anywhere near it!!! (ME: Why a chemical burn?) Oh, because Lightning has a chemical LB14, and that's what gives you chemical burns and LY14 is what gives you heat burns. LC14 gives you cold burns. I learned that if you mix an atom and a nucleus that you get a chemical soup or a heat burn. Well, magnetism can go through water and glass. So, a Carbon 14 dating is actually electricity running through LC14. (Reading from book) Electricity is a range of phenomena derived from a form of energy associated with static dynamic charges. Charges may be characterized as positive or negative in relation to the number of electrons in a charged substance.
Did you know that a nucleus is in the center of a circle that electrons whiz around a nucleus? And that every electron constantly gives our it's energy as an electric force? And did you know that one person named J. Priest had 10 times for electricity in her body than normal. And the electric catfish didn't stop the Egyptians from eating it? Or an electric eel can make a 600 volt shock? And also fire ants can sense electricity. And also the hammerhead shark can sense the electric pulses in the nerves of their victims. And did you know that honey bees also build up a negative electrical charge on their hairy little bodies.
And also that the rattlesnakes sinister forked tongue can sense electrically charged atoms in the air.
I recommend this book to house-workers and my friends. I also might give them a second hand plunger.

I wasn't dissapointed in this book. I was looking for Tesla, and I found Tesla (as well as some strange notes from Percy the Pigeon, but oh well, at least I learned). And yep, that's pretty much it. Horrible Science is a great way of learning science for anyone, but the problem is, people might ONLY remember the horrible stuff.

Another very readable book about a dry subject - the concept of electricity is quite hard to get your head around and we use it all the time - life without it would be very different. I definitely learnt things from this book.
