best thing I learned from this book: the bargaining method. Around 3, my son really started to develop his need for his own choices and this can be encouraged by using the bargaining method. I need him to brush his teeth, he wants to read books so:
We can read 4 books after you brush your teeth.
Its all about finding out what they want from you, to get what you want from them. Then kids feel like they are getting what they want and you feel like you're getting what you want. Win-win and encourages independent thinking and making decisions/compromises. I love that!
This book is small, simple and easy to read. It's full of discipline techniques that help you manage kids without losing your mind. There are brief summaries at the end of each chapter that can easily be photocopied as reminders or helpful tips for parents, baby-sitters, grandparents or others who may need a whole list of things to try besides the automatic responses of yelling or hitting. A great basic little book about positive discipline techniques that work.
This is full of great advice- and is going to make me break my rule of reading once & then selling. I'm going to keep this book around- because I'm going to need to re-read it over and over as the kids get older and reach new stages and I forget all the treasures in here. Obviously, like any self-help book, it's hard to apply the things you read about- habits are hard to break. But a few of the things I've gleaned from this book are already helping us. She's straight-forward and even has a Q&A section in the back!
I have a love-hate relationship with parenting books, but appreciated the straight-forward, level-headed advice in this one. I found it easy-to-read and well-organized. I especially liked the last chapter which was presented in a question and answer format and offered "ideas, not answers" to common parenting questions. I can see going back to it again and again when specific issues arise.
I just re-read this because I needed a refresher and I can feel things going better already. This book is REALLY good. Not only does it have tons of examples on how you can handle different situations but there's a whole chapter about how to handle when you get angry (because we all do!) :-)
When I first read this book I loved it. However, as I learned more I now feel uncomfortable with pretty much all the suggestions in this book. HA. go figure - the ever evolving mindset of a committed parent.
This is one that I just browsed through to see if I could find anything to help with my kids to stop fighting. She did have some good tips and I hope that I can make them work?
Good easy suggestions to getting your kid to cooperate without to much fussing. The squeaky voice puppet trick really works! Amazing, no hassle technique that can work in a pinch.
I did not think that a parenting self help book could have anything good to offer, but boy was I wrong. This book is packed with good advice and maybe a little bad advice but overall I will be putting a lot of her advice into practice.
