As a son of a celebrated jeweler, Michael Aguirre was used to the frivolities of high society. But with his mother's passing and his father on his death bed, his affluent life is threatened.
While out on bail from an estafa case, he ends up beaten black and blue by the man he owes millions to. With an impending deadline, he seeks the help of his sister who wants nothing to do with him, and his childhood friend who happens to be the son of the man who wants him dead. With these high stakes, will Mike come up with the money on time?
The stakes are already high. Life and death. Can it get any higher?
As part of the Heist Club project (various crime/thriller novels from different authors), High Stakes is a fantastic read and easily stands out.
Took several chapters before I could differentiate who's who and who's doing what. Had the novel been beyond 70 pages long, I would have probably been less confused.
That aside, this book is terrific. Desperate man, desperate measures. Time-ticking plotline. The pacing is perfect, the story is engaging, the writing is top-notch—I have a penchant for authors who are obviously gifted with words, and have a strong storytelling sensibility. First novel? I don't believe it. And I mean that in a most flattering way.
Rating: 4.5 stars actually. The -.5 is for making it too short! :) C'mon Chris, give us the next book!
