The battle for humanity's survival continues.
Peter Fromm: After barely surviving the Battle of Kirosha, Captain Fromm and the rest of the 101st Marine Expeditionary Unit are sent forth to defend a vital star system. While the US Navy battles a vast alien armada in the skies above Parthenon, the Devil Dogs must fight a formidable, well-equipped army on the ground. Retreat is not an option.
Lisbeth Zhang: The former naval officer, once a rising star, faces the end of her career. She reluctantly accepts a new, secret posting, one that will turn her into an experimental subject in a covert weapons project that may save humanity - or spell its doom.
Heather McClintock: Being a CIA operative in a hostile galaxy is never easy. Out in the cold, with no support but her wits and skills, can she make a difference in the battles to come or just become another casualty?
The sequel to Decisively Engaged, No Price Too High is a tale of heroism and desperate combat in a hostile universe.
Errata: I accidentally called the secret US program that produced the War Eagle after the USS Lexington instead of the actual first vessel of its kind, the Langley. I have corrected the error in the manuscript and hopefully previous purchasers will have their ebooks updated. My apologies. - C.J. Carella
C.J. discovered his obsession with making up crap and writing it down at the age of 6, when he wrote his first short story, back in the days when the Cold War was still on and the only mobile devices were the wrist watch and the walkie-talkie. He's been making up crap and writing it down for fun and profit ever since.
Another heat-pounding action-packed story! The 6th Fleet battle had me on pins and needles and I was holding my breath for the outcome. My only criticism is that when something truly momentous happens to a key figure there aren't sufficient details that allow us to feel the experience along with the character, such as when Heather doled out her first payback. Nor is there enough deference paid to a main character when tragedy strikes. No spoilers but I think 'he' deserved much more than he received in this story, being such a likable and main character. 😥 These two 'flubs' in understanding the value/impacts to the reader notwithstanding, it's another 5 stars!
This time, however, instead of a barbaric enemy, Captain Fromm and his troops face Starfarer foes that have technology as good if not better than their own. While the focus is on larger set piece battles, there is more than enough gritty combat to satisfy everyone. In addition, one of my gripes from Book 1 - the lack of actual ship to ship combat - is definitely addressed here.
A really fun and enjoyable read and one that I pretty much inhaled truth be told! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone that is a fan of the genre.
I love the story. Misspelled words, typos, grammatical errors are not so much as to be a true distraction but there are a few. Bottom line, I enjoyed the book and I will continue to read the series. If you are a fan of the genre (I call it sci-fi apocalyptic action) you should not be disappointed and I would recommend this author and the series. Exciting, sad, sometimes humorous and told from many view points and through many characters. Not so many as to be disjointed but enough to keep it very interesting and entertaining. All in all, a goodread!;-0
Enjoyable military/sci-fi series the projects current military equipment and tactics into the future in a believable way. Fun tech and engaging characters
I liked this book better than the first one in the series and the first was pretty good. There's a great plot twist (read it yourself to find out what) that has changed things in an interesting way. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still good. But there were a few too many disparate threads for me to keep track of, and some of the battle scenes felt repetitive. They weren’t, but after so many they started to blur a bit.
Solid development of a really engaging series. Both character and attitude/meme ideas are reinforced in depth, breadth and continuously. Nice job, nice read.
Another reviewer, here or elsewhere, said it best -- 'this is the kind of Mil I like to read but hard to find'. Not many authors, at least in SCIFI, get it. This author explained, used a believable TO( table of organization -- tm, squad, plt, co, Bn, regt, etc) which closely resembles what's been in use for the past 100 years starting with German Stormtroopers of WWI.
A minor point it would seem but big to me. Tired of game playing authors who create gaggles to fight, with unrealistic weapons and equipment. If it was just so easy. Too much Star Wars, Trek -- whatever -- where they believe 'security ' is a Klingon with a few others that have no body armor, equipment nor appropriate weapons. I also dislike authors who use 'legions' and 'hordes' or some other bull. Good formations for their day w equipment n weapons they had. Command and Control are high priority , these formations do not have.
Story was steady throughout, action n suspense (of outcomes) the same. Character development , ahh, a little on lite side but there were several that you could identify with and share their experience.
BTW, story, plot not unique n not going to win innovative SCIFI nova awards. Just good action, war story that was steady, credible with characters you could like, even if you wanted to know more.
Last, action n character story and not a lot of tech verbage so 30%+ of story, book is about story and not rationalization of whimsical tech. Too many authors in this genre do it and if they want to win science award, go elsewhere .
The follow-up to Decisively Engaged, this book is the continuation of the war of extermination started by the Lampreys and their clients, the Vipers, along with a new enemy, the Galactic Imperium. Excellent battle scenes, both on the ground and in space, as some of the main characters in Decisively Engaged continue their fight for survival, for themselves and the entire species. Very well done, and I am looking forward to the next book.
It is a lot like Starship Troopers, different enemies, and a lot more of them. Crazy action, and ingenious ideas makes it worth overlooking some less bits. Nope i wont go into them, to much spoiler, lemme just say i wish the focus of the book had shifted more to a different person, as the main does a lot of rinse and repeat in my opinion.
Warp Marine Corps series is turning out to be one of the best written, most interesting action packed series in quite awhile. This volume was extremely well organized. The characters are well developed and like able . Book 2 was one of my favorites in the past year. Great work by C J Carell
Lots of combat as the Warp Marines attempt to prevent Parthenon 3 from being taken by the Vipers. The emergence of a new warp fighter turns the tide in the space war and gives the US hope in a hugely one sided battle.
What a great read! I really enjoyed the first one and this one was even better. Looking to see if there is a number 3 yet.... or coming soon. Well done Mr C J.
