Apocalypse Family #2

"J": Family Reunion II

Rate this book

From the author of the wildly successful debut novel Family Reunion, P. Mark DeBryan, comes a new and terrifying apocalypse family novel. The South African flu had put the fear of God into the world. But the press and the government assured one and all that a revolutionary nanovaccine developed by Dr. Julian Ruegg had stopped the outbreak in its tracks. The vaccine had stopped the flu, yes. But two weeks later a strange and deadly side effect became apparent, a side effect worse than the flu—far, far worse. Jay Brant, mother of two and ex-FBI fingerprint analyst, is trying to survive and get back to her kids as society unravels around her. Nothing matters more than getting her son Mark and his wife to safety in West Virginia, and then rescuing her daughter Auddy, who lives in South Carolina. Jay had put her husband on a plane bound for his family reunion in Seattle, then set off on a road trip to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Her job requires the trip once every two weeks, and the four-hour drive and overnight stay are completely routine. As the day unfolds, she begins to realize that this trip will be anything but routine.

My original Family Reunion J audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

This is the story of a family separated by a disease which turns people into flesh eating monsters.  Though not zombies in the sense they are still alive, but dangerous none-the-less.  It mainly follows Jay, the mother of the besieged family trying to make their way back to each other, but also many other families and their travails.

It is a typical zombie novel in the sense that everyone is constantly on guard, society has fallen into violence and chaos.  Gangs form and break apart, sex slaves and brutality, but also decent groups of people trying to hold the best of mankind together.

Jay is a likable character as she is a mom faced with the worst mankind can offer, intent on finding and protecting her family – if she can find them.  She is resourceful, capable and discovers a badass quality she didn’t know she possessed.  Why drive a car when a Harley is just more cool.

Family Reunion is suspenseful and full of zombie killing action.  You just don’t know when you’ll get your next meal or even a decent night’s sleep.  Without the hope of finding her family, Jay would lose her will to survive.

The story is performed by Eric A. Shelman who does a good job.  He adds to the action and voices the many female characters well with plenty of differentiation to make it easy to know who is speaking.

Though this is book two in a series of unknown length, it can be read as a stand alone novel.  It clearly leaves the door open for the sequel, but ends well enough to stand by itself.

If you enjoy zombie action novels, you should give this one a try.  What sets this one apart from the many, many out there, is that the characters are human, flawed and sometimes just lucky enough to stay alive.  A badass mom who is going to get her family back together in the face of impossible odds makes for a fun ride.

The Family Reunion series continues at the same frantic pace as book 1. Different characters experience the apocalypse, and as before the author perfectly encompasses a whole range of different types of people. The author captures what i demand in an apocalyptic book, and that is realistic emotions, and realistic reactions.
Over -religious books are quickly ceased as i find the self importance quite irritating.
P. Mark Debryan understands that in society there is a balance of people, and you find religious and non-religious characters in this series. You won't find this defines how superior a character may be.
A truly fantastic follow up to book 1.

I was so excited to see this book pop up on my Kindle! I read Family Reunion, (I highly recommend it..especially if you are considering this book), and wondered how things were going for Ryan's family. Now I am eager for the next book to find out if Ryan will make it back home.
This is the second book of the series. In the first Ryan is on the west coast when the apocalypse happens. His family, J and their children are on the east coast. That is my nightmare. I have family in several states and being far away from them is something I can relate to. The first book is about Ryan and other family members of his. This book is about J and her search for her children. It also is the story of the Dr whose vaccine started it all. There is more to that but you need to read it.
I feel that the author does an excellent job making his characters real people. I really liked J and understood her need to gather up her children. Another character I really liked is Auddy. She is the daughter of Ryan and J. The family is very loving and a strong unit, even though they are separated. Both J and Auddy demonstrated this. It would be easy to hate the Dr who was responsible for the outbreak, if this were another book. In this book, though, he is made human. His relationship with his son Simon is beautiful. I held my breath and my heart raced with things that happened to them. I think that is a big draw for me...the family love in this series. My family means everything to me. I would fight for them too. I finished this book hoping they were all okay and that I will see them again in the next book.
There is the typical stuff you find in zombie books. There are a few references to sex scenes but they are not really explicit and brief. If you are looking for something with no violence, language or adult situations then you might want to keep shopping. If you are looking for something with mega gory violence, lots of colorful language and explicit sex scenes you may also want to check out other books. But if you are looking for a good story that has realistic people, some violence and gore, that makes your heart pound and your stomach clench click the buy button. I would recommend that you also buy Family Reunion. Both books can be read alone but you will enjoy it more if you read them both.

Just lustened to the audible (4/30/17) by Eric A Shelman and what a phenomenal job he did. Etric's characters were tright on, very descriptive and excellent expression. Loved the story just as much 2nd time around. Wow, the long awaited sequel to The Family Reunion is everything we wanted. Mark takes the story back to the east coast as we follow the rest of the family, Jay, Audie and Julian, as they struggle to make it to a safe place. I love a story that all parts come together after lots of action, suspense and twisted moments. Mark does an excellent job depicting his women as strong, resilient, courageous characters. This book flowed well from chapter to chapter following the different journeys. I am already excited to follow the journey home from Washington State of the rest of the Family in the next book. Well done, Mark DeBryan.

The first book in this series is Family Reunion and I would recommend reading that one first. Not only because you will know who is who with the characters but because it is an amazing story! I immediately fell in love with it and the many family members and friends they meet along the way while trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. With that said, book two takes place on the opposite side of the country from book one and I love how the author is showing what is happening to the characters on both sides of the country. “J” is the wife of Ryan who is out west attending a family reunion. The problems that “J” faces while all alone, setting things up to find her daughter and hopefully other family members is something I would not want to face! She is one gritty, tough and head strong woman who faces impossible situations and somehow comes out on top…well almost! This is a definitely good story full of action, emotional situations and characters that I would want on my team in the event of an apocalypse! Thank you Mr. DeBryan for anther enjoyable, entertaining and engrossing tale and I am so looking forward to book three in this series!

Family comes first...

It is the continuing theme of the series...which shows the weakness and the strength of the family. J, like the alphabet not the bird, is Ryan Brant's wife who is determined to find and bring her daughter Auddy and son Mark to the safety of their family cabin. All three have strive to make sense of the madness that has plunged the world into insanity. But this is also the story of a man, a doctor who might or might not be resonsible for the adverse effects of the 'cure' on the human population. His son is all that is left of his own family and to protect him he must make his way to the CDC to try to right a possible wrong. But his journey to absolution is far more dangerous than even he could have imagined. (Possible spoilers) DeBryan gives us a back story that connects to Jack Walker and his battle against a shadow group that is determined to rule the world.

This is the follow up to Family Reunion, the first book in the series which should be read first. While J's husband Ryan is away attending a family reunion all hell breaks loose. A flu is running rampant resulting in much loss of life until a vaccine becomes available. People hope that will stop the deaths but unfortunately it turns many of the people who received the shot into mindless, savage killers, hungering for human flesh. J has one thought only and that is family. She travels 400 terror filled miles, numerous crazies and scum of the earth survivors to reach her daughter Auddy. Another great action packed, emotional and family driven read by P. Mark DeBryan that I would recommend to anyone who loves the zombie genre and their families.

Awesome story with some very strong female leads, and a doctor that I wanted to smack now and then.
A sequel (sort of) that manages to be even better than the first book, it is a real rollercoaster of a ride with so much action that it made my head spin. Even the chapters surrounding the scientific aspects were fun to read and kept the pace going. I can't wait for the next book!

Excellent

This book was great! It follows several people through an outbreak of a flu virus that is quite dangerous and worse, through a resulting apocalypse. There is lots of danger and suspense, horror and hope in this story. The characters were well written and easy to like(except the bad guys).I loved it.

Good story

Another 'realistic' zombie apocalypse story with normal people doing their best to survive. No special forces training just people doing what they can & hoping for the best.

It is not a sequel.

The writing was choppy sometimes but the story stayed interesting. The book has several questions, unanswered like the first. It is a good read.

The authors second book of the series does not disappoint. This story has a great cast of characters and is entertaining from beginning to end. I devoured this book in a day once I started reading I did not want to put it down. The way the main character will stop at nothing to reunite with her family is what I like best about the book. If you haven't read the first of this series I highly recommend both books. Well worth the price.

Quickly becoming a favorite author

While it wasn't as amusing as the first book, it was still very good. Once I found the characters and storyline intriguing and enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the next book and hope it's coming soon!

Great read

I really liked the premise of this story, our shriekers aren't really Zombies, so that is a different take on the genre.
The characters are well developed and you get invested in them! I hope there is a book 3!

Needs another sequel. Solid writing. Was left with some questions, especially in regards to vaccine. Who? Why? Read both books.

Jay realizes that her day has just gotten worse than she could possibly imagine when she sees her first zombie. Involved in a multi- car pile up, she takes the first vehicle she can find...a motorcycle and this shy, reserved woman disappears as survival takes over. Her main goal is to find her daughter and get them both to safety, but the trip itself could kill her. Almost taken by a criminal gang and forced to join other groups of unlikely survivors, she can only hope her family is still alive when she arrives. Will she ever see her children again or her husband who flew to a family reunion in Seattle?
A killer book with suspense and survival making a must read.
