Chasing the Earl

Rate this book
Young Lady Helena Bradbury’s world is turned upside-down when her father suddenly dies, leaving her alone and homeless at 18. After her cousin, the notoriously narcissistic Walter Bradbury inherits the estate, he turns his sights on her vast wealth and will do absolutely anything to secure it.

There’s just one problem, she’s now under the protection of her father’s closest friend, The Earl of Suffolk, thanks to the foresight to transfer guardianship before he passed.

Yet it may not be enough, for with his lawyers and a fierce and dirty determination to win at all costs, her cousin doubles down and fights to find her a husband and secure a way into her riches.

Her only chance lies in the hope for love from unexpected places. But will it be in time? And will it be enough?

This is a wholesome, clean Regency Romance novella you won't want to put down. If you like historical romance, you'll love this enjoyable afternoon read!

“Feelings were not something you could control, could you? Not with any predictability, and he survived on predictability.”

William Fielding, Earl of Suffolk is close to a confirmed bachelor, at 34 he knows he needs to marry, for an heir if nothing else. He finds himself guardian to an 18-year-old heiress, daughter of his good friend. He is not prepared for the feelings her presence in his life brings out. He is attracted to Helena but he is supposed to find her a good husband and protect her fortune from her cousin, the heir to her father’s earldom.

Lady Helena Bradbury, daughter of the late Earl of Lincoln and cousin to the despicable, slimy new Earl of Lincoln. She is 18, has not had a season, has rarely left her home in the country but she trusts that her father has chosen well in her guardian.

This is a sweet story of love from unexpected quarters. There is instant attraction but they both avoid each other in the beginning – him because of the age difference and her because she is unsure of what she feels. It is nice to see Helena make the decision to go after what she wants. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that Will kept the difficulties he was having with her slimy cousin over her money. While I understand in the period women were sheltered but Will seemed progressive in some ways. It made me cheer a bit when Helena takes him to task. Ms. Grave is a new author for me and I enjoyed her characters, the pace of the story and the caring way she approached the tender feelings of blooming love! This is an author I will keep on my radar.

I was given this book in exchange for my honest review. I give this book a Four-star rating.

A good clean romance

This is a good story by an apparently beginning writer. The writing isn't polished, but she gets her story across just fine. The plot contains enough elements to keep it interesting, and the characters are good. It just lacks the depth that will come in time.

I predict a good future for this author. I have read early works of best-selling authors, and this story compares very favorably.

Needs grammar and paragraph development

The story is not well developed. It is full of run-on sentences and grammatical errors. The paragraphs are very choppy and do not flow together well making it difficult to follow the flow of the story.
