Jane B. Mason grew up in a large family in northern Minnesota. She has written books for kids of all ages under many names and on many subjects, among them ghosts, Jedi, detective duos, princesses, twins, mean girls, and slam books.
Jane has lived in the midwest and on both coasts, but appears to have settled in Oakland, California, and writes almost every day at either a friend's dining room table or a little studio in her back yard, where she has a purple loveseat, a whole lotta books, and an odd selection of trinkets she has unwittingly been collecting since she was a child.
I read this book as a re-hash of my childhood, to be honest. I bought it quite a while ago, just as I saw it in a thrift store, and it's been sitting unread on my bookshelf ever since. I figured now was the time to finally pick it up again. For this review, because there are three stories contained in the one book, I will rate them each individually.
If The Shoe Fits : 4/5 I did like the introduction of each of the princesses quite a lot, as well as their actions throughout the story; however, and I make no secret of this, I've never liked the way Cinderella submitted to her stepmother and stepsisters' every whim. I know that it automatically must be included in all adaptations and parts of Ella's story, but, regardless, it made this story just a little less enjoyable than the rest of them.
Who's The Fairest? : 5/5 Heads down my favourite story of the three, because it centers around my favourite princess of the four: Snow. I don't want to give anything away about the story, but let's just say that, in my opinion, Snow has the greatest foe to overcome.
Let Down Your Hair : 4.5/5 Again, this one I liked a lot, and is my second favourite of the three. Conveniently enough, Rapunzel is almost my second favourite girl of the foursome. It definitely also had a lot of action going one, and was fun to read--even though I did sort of rush on this one, to be honest.
All in all, it was a worthwhile way of passing the time, and infinitely relaxing--nostalgically speaking. I did successfully remember why I loved these books as a child, and I can definitely see myself revisiting them if I ever need that "warm blanket and hot chocolate" feel again. That's exactly what I think that everyone will get from this book.
I remember this series being one of the more decent ones for little girls. It didn't have pop culture references, mix "cool" muggle technology into the fantasy land (which would have been outdated by now), or hyper-focus on crushes. It had some mandatory feminist self-hatred moments as a product of its time, but it's pretty easy to ignore and roll your eyes at. (Is it good to be a princess in this universe or do the "other princesses" besides the main four act like prissy weaklings we're not supposed to like? Make up your mind. Mainly the Rapunzel stories seem to contradict the lessons of the other ones where all the girls act pretty normal for once). Kids just want to read about princesses having fun adventures without any preaching or "hip" pandering, and that can be a rare thing.
Next in my rereading-my-entire-personal-library project is a favorite series from my childhood: The Princess School! These books have such great messages for both young girls and adult women alike, and I found myself quite enjoying diving back into this royal world even if I'm far above the intended reader age now. The first four books (of seven) to me are the most well-written and cohesive, with my favorite being the fourth, Beauty is a Beast, a book that resonates a lot with me as a lifelong perfectionist. My least favorite is probably the sixth, Apple-y Ever After, which to me lacks the heart and sisterhood so present in the others. Overall, it's a cute and fun series perfect for elementary and middle school readers.
This little series is so gracious! I mostly liked the tale about Snow White, but the other two are cute, too. I don't know if I will continue with the following installments, but the ones included in this book are quite funny short retellings.
Wonderfully cute and simple retelling if Snow White, Cinderella, sleeping beauty and rapunzel. In this version they are all going to school together and become friends. It was very entertaining for my 5-8 year old girls.
This was one of the best books I read. It shows the importance of friendships in life. And I love this book to a great extent, it’ll always have a place in my heart❤️.
One of my favourite books growing up, I read it over and over. Fairy tale retelling, I can still imagine the lines and the shivers I got reading this so many years later.
my sister bought this for me when i was a kid, some of my favorite memories from childhood is just being absolutely engrossed in this book and reading it over and over again (:
I thought this book was very cute and I want my daughter to read it (since she loves princesses!). It takes the classic fairy tales of Snow White, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella and changes them up a bit. It has a heavy focus on friendship and makes the girls a bit younger (there is hardly a mention of princes in the stories--beyond one good friend/crush). I look forward to reading it and discussing it with my daughters--and soon! It's a quick and easy read. My only gripe is that in the Rapunzel story the evil kidnapper turns into a more sympathetic character--but even that could provide lots of good discussion, so I'm okay with it.
Kenz and I finally finished this last week. I thought it was cute and Kenzie loved it. We already checked out the fourth book in the series and started it a couple nights ago. Definitely worth a read with a little girl who loves princesses.
Definutivamente la recomiendo para que se la compren a niñas menores de 10 años. La historia refleja pa vida de varias princesas en una escuela. Bonitas, amables, tiernas y algunas malas y crueles. Una buena historia que ensalza la amistad
I'm kinda embarrassed to say this, but I actually REALLY enjoyed this book. The characters were humorous interpretations of the ever classic princesses. A good read for any little girl that loves princesses.
