Brinley Adams is pleased to get a job as assistant to elusive and reclusive billionaire Lindrom Drage. That the job requires him to live in the man’s home in the country is only a bonus. While he’s not exactly running away, he’s trying to leave behind a crazy, stalking ex, and Drage’s isolated home might be just the place to hide.
Lindrom Drage, known at home as Dragon, just wants an assistant who works out for longer than a month or two. He’s already gone through several in the last year, and he wants someone who can do the job and put up with his refusal to deal with anything that takes him out of his home. But when he meets Brin, he suddenly wants so much more than just a work assistant.
Brin feels the pull between them as strongly as Dragon does, but Brin doesn’t know Dragon’s true secret – the man is actually a dragon and he believes that Brin is his mate. The trick is going to be convincing Brin that neither of them is crazy, and that not only are dragons real, so are soul mates.
Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."
A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.
Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.
One of the many reasons I like dragons and dragon shifters so much is because the worlds they live in and the rules they obey can be very different from one book to the next. Since they are all made up – as far as I know – the sky is pretty much the limit, and I love exploring each new version I come across. ‘Blowing Smoke’ has many common elements with stories I have read before: the dragon shifter is solitary, somewhat grumbly when disturbed, he likes hoarding treasure so he is a billionaire, and he is insanely possessive and very dominant. All of these traits emerge as the story develops and as Brin and Dragon get to know each other, but there are also some things that are different about this particular dragon. It was a pleasant surprise for me to see the full extent of what that means for Brin and his new relationship with Dragon in the end. Very nicely done!
Brin has just been hired by a reclusive billionaire who needs a personal assistant to keep the world away from his doorstep. Brin is desperate for a good job, and possibly a hiding place, to get away from his stalkerish ex. He expects to work hard and wants to be professional about it even though he lives under the same roof as his employer, but what he finds is not at all what he expects. Brin falls from one shock into the next and when he finds all his most secret fantasies suddenly up for grabs, so to speak, he is not sure what to believe. It’s embarrassing, that’s what it is.
Dragon has waited for his heartmate for many centuries, and is delighted when he begins to see and understand that Brin may be The One. Dragon is not one to hold back, and Brin’s attempts to continue working and stay professional make Dragon growl. But he also understands that the full extent of who he is and what they mean to each other may be overwhelming. Dragon can be patient – when he has to be – and he is determined to win Brin over. His arsenal of sexy seductions and deliciously perverted BDSM ideas is pretty much endless, and are only matched by his determination to make Brin his in every way possible.
The result is a story with considerable heat, some very hot physical activities, and a slow seduction that makes Brin’s head spin. By the time Dragon adds the revelation about his true form, Brin is pretty much lost. He does have to fight his brain’s ideas about what is real, but his heart and his body have nearly signed on the dotted line way before Brin can shake his head.
If you like dragon shifters and their secrets, if you think a cute personal assistant being seduced by his hot, dominant boss sounds interesting, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that is hot and more than a little kinky, then you will probably like this novella.

2.5 Skim, skim, skim. So to escape his pyscho ex, Brin takes a job as a personal assistant for a reclusive rich guy, who just happens to be smoking hot. Within 24 hours they are spending more time in bed than Brin is working. Well, pretty much 24 hours. And then... that's all they proceed to do for the next 5 months, almost all of which is documented in the book. Despite being BDSM, they don't get into it too much, talk but not too much in the way of whipping or whatever. There is no reference to Brin's ex again although it does seem that he raped Brin? Hard to say. Anyway, it took Dragon a while to convince Brin he was a real dragon but then they go on their happy sex-mad ways. The house sounded cool and Dragon cooks bacon with his fire breath, but otherwise it was just sort of more of the same old same old. I'd though maybe it would be different, but no.
I was reading the updated Sean Michael bio at the back and it says working on several books at once. I think that's a problem. Within two sentences, we are told that Marianna is his cook and the kid is her grandson. Two sentences later he calls her mama and he's referred to as her son. We are told that Dragon took her off the streets after she'd been abused. Later we're told that Marianna's family has worked for his for centuries. So which is it?

Lindrom Drage, otherwise known as Dragon, just wants to be left alone. He also wants to stop replacing his assistants every few weeks; it really isn’t that hard of a request. When his newest assistant shows up at his door, however, Dragon finds himself wanting the man for everything except his ability to answer a phone. While Brin may have taken the job in order to escape a bad situation, Dragon plans on doing everything in his power to make the younger man stay and with the attraction simmering between them, that looks as though it will be an easy accomplishment. Now all he has to do is find a way to tell Brin that Dragon is more than Lindrom’s name, its what he is.
I can always count on Sean Michael to deliver an easy, kinky, entertaining read that I’m sure to enjoy. I liked the set up for Brin’s character, taking the job to escape an ex-boyfriend turned stalker, and Dragon was, well, a dragon so it was pretty much a guarantee that I’d like him too. Lol I thought the characters fit well together; Dragon gave Brin safety and a chance to be loved while exploring all the things he’d only dreamed about while Brin accepted all of Dragon without hesitation and with a great deal of enthusiasm. :D
The setting itself was kind of neat and I really liked how it was apart from the rest of the world, so to speak, though it was a little disappointing that I didn’t get to ‘see’ more of the mansion as I was given a nice description of the outside but didn’t get much in the way of the interior. The story moved along at a fairly steady pace with a few small time skips that you don’t even really notice until they’ve been mentioned and the transitions were nice and smooth. The initial getting together does happen fairly quickly but I was expecting that so it didn’t bother me at all. There is a lot of sex in this, also expected, but it was nice to see some things brought into the story in the way of kink that I hadn’t seen before. All I can say is: that chair though. Seriously. I don’t want to spoil that so I’m afraid you’ll have to read the story if you want to know what I’m talking about. lol
There was very little that I didn’t like about this story as I enjoyed the characters as well as the overall setting and I’m pretty much always up for a bit of kink. ;) I do wish there had been a little something with the ex-boyfriend but it wasn’t necessary for me to enjoy the story itself. I liked the characters and the setting quite a bit and this was overall a nice afternoon’s diversion. If you like your shifter stories with a bit of kink, have enjoyed Sean Michael before, or just want to read anything featuring a dragon, I’d recommend giving this one a try.
Blowing Smoke may start out like you're about to read a boss-employee romance-especially after reading the blurb, but it almost immediately turns into a pure oh-so-tremendously-guilty pleasure read instead. And it stays that way the whole way through. Yes, it's peppered with other details about Dragon being a shifter and he and Brin being soul mates, but the primary focus of the story stays on their intensely passionate and quite naughty physical relationship.
When the story first starts out, you'd expect it to come back around to some type of conflict...like maybe Brin's stalker ex, or maybe something having to do with the dragon soul mate angle, but while we do get a little more regarding Brin and Dragon's bond and Dragon's reveal to Brin that yes, he really is a dragon, the rest of the story is a continual look into their intimate relationship. Admittedly those scenes were scorching and risqué, and they'll have you reaching for a fan and copious amounts of ice to cool yourself off...but personally I would have liked a bit more relationship building and some additional friction in the story to give it more depth.
Like I said--this is a guilty pleasure book, and if you're a fan of that (I mean come on-we all want a good, smutty read from time to time, right?), this book will fit the bill quite nicely. Good thing that's exactly what I was in the mood for when I picked it up ;-)
Blowing Smoke is strictly for readers 18+ due to adult language and explicit M/M sexual content. A LOT of that content. Those who like a bit of dragon shifter in their stories will enjoy that aspect as well, just again understand that the focus of the story lies in the more carnal scenes-all of which are quite creatively written and full of intensely sensual and explicitly erotic content.
Blowing Smoke by Sean Michael this read was okay for me. The connection between Brinley and Dragon is good. I liked the storyline, I did not love it though. Which shocks me cause usually I am a die hard Sean Michael fangirl who goes nuts over the newest release. This one not so much. It is okay though. Brinley is going in for a job at Lindrom Drage's house. Lindrom likes to be called Dragon at him. He also is a recluse. It is Brin's job to keep everyone away from him. But the more time Brinley spends with Dragon the more Dragon knows he cannot let Brin go… Ever. Perhaps for me this is where the storyline went wrong, I felt no insta connection between these two. I very much enjoy insta love and I am all for it in a book, just convince me it is there and real. I felt less than impressed with the connection factor. And for me once you lose me there, the romance goes down hill. Now are all the elements of a great story here? Yes, great ideas, good characters, and a very different take on Dragons themselves. I just felt this was not romantic to me. Four Twinkling Stars
Do dragons have soul mates is the tag line. My immediate response was, well yeah, we all have soul mates!! In this story, the dragon recognizes his soul mate immediately, of course. Wouldn't that be a handy thing in the real world? The soul mate, being a lowly human, is confused and a bit scared at first, but he plays along quite well. I mean, the sex is awesome, so why not, right?
As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock, Brin and his Dragon get four hearts for some well written and super steamy sex scenes. Four is all it gets because it has so much potential for a deeper and more interesting story. So many things were quickly glossed over that could have been explored in depth.
The sex was just as hot as I had anticipated in this book, with a lighter amount of BDSM than I was expecting. My biggest gripe with this is that the plot was very loose. I expect insta-love with a shifter book, but it seemed that both Brin and Dragon only felt a mild attraction at first, and then, suddenly it was so much more without any transition. The characters clearly had their own backstories but we were only given hints to them so that not a lot of development happened. Overall, this was good, and I liked it, but it had the promise of being so much better.
This was an intriguing story. Brin is working for Dragon, who hates being social. He is the personal assistant to Dragon, but also his mate. Brin happens to be running away from a stalker ex-boyfriend… but you don’t really read too much about that storyline. It would have been very interesting to delve into that portion of the story as the character was already introduced. The interactions between Brin and Dragon were endearing and delightful.
It was a quaint story that can be read in under 2 hours that will keep you entertained. My only wish is that it were longer!
Brin takes the job as assistant to escape a stalker. What he gets is so much more. Dragon lives the life of a recluse. He doesn't like people. As the story unfolds the truth behind not leaving the mansion is revealed; social interactions are on a small reason. There really is a great story in this book, it is just wrapped around other things like sex.
There are extremely sexual situations throughout the book. It is totally smoking hot and totally expected coming from this author. I won my copy from Sean Michael's Halloweenpalooza.
If you're in the mood for lots of BDSM sex with very little plot, you're going to love this. Dragon and Brin are hot but I prefer to have more character development and at least some plot in a book... so this just didn't do it for me.
