MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5 to 4 Stars.
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I ENJOYED THESE; 4= I LIKED THESE A LOT; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

Roberts’ NIGHT TALES is an easily read Contemporary Romance, light Suspense series/collection with a touch of Paranormal in Proximity-Danger settings. The main characters have ties within Law Enforcement. I grew up with NRs books. This was a fun reread of 5 of the 6 stories (posted separately below).

NIGHT SHADOW, bk 2
In NIGHT SHADOW, we meet the grown up younger sister to the FMC in bk 1. Deborah O’Roarke is a successful, ambitious yet ethical up and coming ADA for Urbana’s justice department. The MMC is a very complex man. Millionaire and savy business owner Gage Guthrie has both a public and a private persona. Under disguise and while others sleep, he watches over the the streets of Urbana interceding on behalf of those at risk, the vulnerable innocent. The press has named him, Nemesis. The MCs in NIGHT SHADOW strongly reminded me of JD Robb’s “In Death” series characters NYPSD Lt Eve Dallas & drool-worthy and complicated Billionaire Roake. By the publication dates, I would guess that Roberts was teasing out character details for the soon to be published book, Naked in Death, bk 1 in very successful “In Death” series (50+ titles).

UPDATE: NIGHT SHADE, bk 3
In NIGHT SHADE, we meet driven, focused, very capable, and lovely FMC Denver Police Department’s Lt Althea Grayson, 32, former partner and now working for Captain Boyd Fletcher of bk 1 in this series. MMC former military Covert Ops renegade, lawyer and Montana ranch owner Colt Nightshade comes from a monied background. Since retiring from the military he fills his time ranching and “helping out” friends and others with special requests, favors that others cannot quickly resolve. Colt and Captain Boyd’s friendship goes back to college. Colt has come to Denver looking for the runaway daughter of a friend. She has been missing several weeks and is expected of being snatched up into the trafficking trade. Colt intends to get her back and Captain Boyd has partnered him with Althea while searching Denver’s streets and darkest pits.

Just as in NIGHT SHADOW, aspects of the MCs in NIGHT SHADOW strongly reminded me of JD Robb’s “In Death” series characters NYPSD Lt Eve Dallas & her partner, drool-worthy and very complicated Billionaire Roake. Althea’s personal back ground, work ethic, belief in “the System” and driven personality very much foreshadowed the later character, LtDallas. I could see Roarke in certain attitudes and methods Colt favored, as well.

UPDATE: NIGHT SMOKE, bk 4
NIGHT SMOKE, bk 4 ~ an Opposites Attract Romance Suspense story.
In NIGHT SMOKE, we meet Captain Boyd’s younger sister, FMC Natalie Fletcher, age 32, an efficient and driven, prominent Urbana business owner. (Boyd is in bks 1, 3 & 4). When one of Natalie’s properties storing stock for her soon-to-be-released line of Intimate Apparel is destroyed by an arsonist’s fire, she finds herself cooperating with MMC Arson Investigator Ryan Piasecki. Ryan, 36 and divorced, moved to arson investigations after 10yrs with the Urbana fire department. A third generation fire fighter (now in his 5th yr as an investigator), Ry is known to detest politics and idiots. In addition, he is smart, thorough, competent and unshakable in court as an expert.

Certain aspects of Ry’s “take no crap,” independent/arrogant personality reminded me of JD Robb’s “In Death” series’ main character and former street tough, Billionaire Roake. :D

In NIGHT SHIELD we meet former enterprising street kid, now Denver night club owner MMC Jonah Blackhawk. Blackhawk, 30, was pulled off the streets and straightened up years ago by a tenacious cop, Lieutenant Boyd Fletcher, who saw a clever mind with possibilities (Fletcher is featured in bk 1 of Night Tales). Boyd is now Denver’s police commissioner and he is asking for Blackhawk’s cooperation in a Major Crimes case. Detective FMC Ally Fletcher, his daughter, will be heading an undercover op aimed at catching a new and troubling crime ring hitting couples’ homes with high-end consumables, pricey jewelry and classy cars. The scam seems to be stemming from one of several night clubs - and Blackhawk owns one. Although Jonah isn’t keen on having cops inside his place, he agrees. The idea of criminals pegging his customers or a crime ring operating from within his business angers him more. While Jonah and Ally work together to catch the criminals, an ex from Ally’s past also cracks off a few hits. As pressure and steam build, what could possibly go wrong?

Certain aspects of Jonah Blackhawk’s personality reminded me of JD Robb’s “In Death” male main character, a former street tough - entrepreneur and billionaire, Roake. I have always enjoyed the “sneaky, clever and industrious street kid who goes straight” character so Blackhawk was a Yes, for me. Ally reminded me a bit of Eve Dallas in the same series. Her dedication to the uniform, steely focus, organized mind and tough mindedness were very similar. I enjoyed HOT SHIELD as a reread.

Each of the books in this series are early NR novels (published in 1985-early 2000’s). They read very quickly. I still find them satisfying as quick, Pick-Me-Up reads between meatier books or my other favorite genres.

READER CAUTION ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Detailed intimacy occurs (but not to the degree of many romance novels today).
VIOLENCE - PG.

I would recommend this series to anyone who likes the J. D. Robb 'In Death' series - it's almost as if this Night Tales series was a practice run for the In Death series: There's a rich guy, some lovely ladies, there are people by the name of O'Roarke, there's crime-fighting, suspense, romance - what more do we want?

Nora Robert's books are always a fast fun read. I use them as cleansers after I finish a particularly heavy subject matter or storyline book. These "Night" books had the same theme but she managed for the most part to keep the characters separate and yet interwoven with the characters from the other "Night" books. Well played.

I liked the way Nora Roberts writes a romance with intrigue and ties it in to peripheral characters in subsequent books in her multiple volume stories.

I enjoyed the interactions of characters from one story to another. It’s fun escapist literature. Series are Nora Roberts best work.
