Rate this book
"I killed my parents when I was thirteen years old."
And now, with the murder of Missy Blake twenty-two years later, it's time for Jack Greene to finish what he started.

When the co-ed's mutilated body is found, the police are clueless, but Jack knows what killed the pretty college student; he's been hunting it for years. The hunt has been going on for too long, though, and Jack wants to end it, but he can't do it alone. The local police aren't equipped to handle the monster in their midst, so Jack recruits Major Kelly Langston, and together they set out to rid the world of this murdering creature once and for all.

Thomas is an award winning newspaper reporter, TV news producer, writer, playwright, and essayist. He writes in many genres and may actually be the only writer to ever be involved in projects with Stephen King and The Rev. Rick Warren at the same time.

"Thomas is one of those outstanding Southern writers - seemingly soft, languid, maybe even lazy, when actually what he is, is cotton wrapped about a razor. Half the time you don't even know he's gotten you until it's too late."

Review: MONSTERS by Thomas Smith

I loved this horror novella! It was an entertaining one-session read for me, much more due to my enrapture in the story than to length. Protagonist Jack has so much about which he could boast_; but he keeps his knowledge and talents to himself, an effective vigilante for the forces of good. What a refreshing character!

I can't be too specific, in order not to give away the tale. There is gore--in monstrous bucketloads. There are monsters--human and not. There is a wonderfully engaging tale. I expect to think of this one for quite a while.

This is the second book by Smith I have read. Like the first, I come away impressed with Smith's writing style, his imagination and ability to purely entertain.

Like his first book, Something Stirs, Smith knows how to construct a solid plot, keep the pace flowing smoothly. Every chapter contains more layers of the plot to keep you hooked and keep those pages turning.

I loved the shortness of this story but I reckon it would be just as good if it was a novella or longer. I loved the background story to what contributed to Jack's special abilities. This adds strength to the plot and credibility to who Jack is and why he is. The reader can see why he is a monster hunter rather than just a character who has a desire or passion to be this. Jack's background also endears the reader to Jack as the protagonist and you are on his side. What he experienced as a young teenager generates sympathy towards him. You find yourself on his side and as mentioned, endeared towards him as a result.

The action scenes in this short are well described and keep you reading. Some readers might find fight scesnes difficult to read and may skim over them, but in this story, they stimulate your imagination to picture this happening in your mind.. I found this Fight scenes can be an author's weak point unless developed well with practice but Smith has no trouble with this.

I won't spoil for the readers of this review but I do like Smith's take on this particular monster. A welcome deviation from the ho-hum portrayal of this creature in recent films and novels that have saturated the market with the same depiction ad nauseum!

I would love to see more short stories involving Jack and hopefully Kelly Langston. These two make a formidable team and compliment each other well. I wonder if there could even be a romance subplot develop for the future?

Thoroghly enjoyed this short. Looking forward to more in this series and Smith's future work.

Highly Recommended.
