I am actively trying to change my English bible translation every year to give me a fresh perspective on the Word of God. 2020 was the CSB. I thoroughly loved my experience this year with this Bible, both the translation itself and the format and study notes in the Everyday Study Bible were a great blessing to me.

First, the translation:
I really admire what they have put together here somehow managing beauty, readability, and sturdiness. I cannot think of one instance where the CSB rendering of a text struck me as incorrect or unfaithful. The translation is a triumph of modern language and modern scholarship and I look forward to reading it again in the future.

Second, this particular edition:

This is a very scaled back version of a study Bible, which not only makes it very easy to carry with me to church each week but surprisingly the lack of overwhelming notes highlights the importance of what as included. My favorite feature was the BOLD-FACED type in the new testament every time the old testament was being directly quoted. I also enjoyed the 99 Essential Christian Truths that were called out within the text as they appeared. Seriously this study Bible was a joy.

While I am thankful that my determination to primarily read a new translation each year lead me to spend so much time with this one, I am now feeling the weight of having to say goodbye. Well, at least until next time, because I will come back to this one. It it certainly one of my favorite Bibles that I have owned.

Read through the Bible this year with the Bible Recap. Finished one day ahead of schedule because I didn't trust myself to remember tomorrow's reading, since I'll be out of routine. 😂

In 2003 Holman, a Christian publisher, released a new translation of the bible, the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), and it’s a terrific one -- readable, but with no loss of intelligibility or the “dumbing down” that accompanies some modern translations. Two years later the publisher released this popular study bible, with great learning aids, maps, charts, and color design. It’s tough to recommend to believers that they run out and buy yet another bible (the 1990s and early part of this century were rife with new bible versions), but this study bible has much to recommend it, including the large print.

Here are five different translations of Amos, 5:21, concluding with the HCSB, if you’d like to compare:

New International Version
"I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me.

English Standard Version
“I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

New American Standard Bible
"I hate, I reject your festivals, Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.

King James Bible
I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

Holman Christian Standard Bible
I hate, I despise your feasts! I can't stand the stench of your solemn assemblies.

Translations courtesy biblehub.com.

(Update): In 2017 the Holman people released a new version of the HCSB, now called simply the Christian Standard Bible (CSB), and employing more gender-neutral language. I wish them both well. More information about the new translation can be found here:

Today, there are more Bibles available than at any other time in history – but with so many Bibles to choose from, finding the right Bible that accurately and faithfully translates the Word of God into contemporary language can be a challenging, daunting task.

That’s why I am so excited to discover the HCSB Study Bible (Holman Christian Standard Bible – God’s Word For Life) – an award-winning Bible that faithfully translates Scripture in a way that is easy to read and understand – yet highly accurate.

The HCSB Study Bible uses the Holman Christian Standard Bible as its translation – a Modern English translation that was initially published in 1999 (New Testament) and completed in 2004 (Old Testament). The Bible was translated by an interdenominational translation team of over 100 top conservative scholars who ascribe to the inspiration and inerrancy of God’s Word.

The original translation team translated the HCSB Study Bible using a process called Optimal Equivalence – a methodology that combines the use of literal translation where a word-for-word rendering is clearly understandable, and a more dynamic translation where a literal translation would obscure the meaning for today’s audience. This results in a text is both accurate and readable – the best of both worlds when it comes to Bible translation!

The current development team of the HCSB Study Bible surveyed focus groups to determine what they would find useful in a Study Bible and incorporated their ideas into the design. The result? A beautiful blend of study aids that enhance – not overwhelm – the text!

Here are a few of the features you’ll find inside of the HCSB Study Bible:

* 15,000 Study Notes
* 290 Word Studies
* Four-Color Presentation Pages
* 141 Photographs
* Two-Column Text Setting
* 62 Timelines
* 59 Maps
* One-Year Bible Reading Plan
* 24 Articles
* Center Column References
* 16 Illustrations/Reconstructions
* Topical Subheads
* 15 Charts

The HCSB Study Bible has received accolades from many top Christian pastors, authors, and Bible teachers, and is a 2011 ECPA Christian Book Award Winner!

If you are looking for a full-featured Study Bible – particularly one featuring an alternative yet reliable translation to enhance your time in God’s Word – the HCSB Study Bible is definitely worth your consideration!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes. However, the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I love the HCSB translation. It actually explains the text more accurately in certain places than certain other translations do. Also, I like how through out this study Bible it teaches some Hebrew and Greek words to bring greater understanding portions of the text. I would definitely recommend it to augment one's study of the Bible.

Highly recommended! I do like this translation, but it is not my favorite because if you are familiar with the Bible and have read other translations before some verses seemed reversed. The end of the verse at the beginning and the beginning at the end. If you have never read the Bible then it is easy to read and understand.

I had been using the NIV Study Bible for nearly forty years, and I was ready for a change. I wanted Scripture to feel fresh and alive as I read it.
I’d be the last person to call myself a Bible scholar, but I love digging deeper when something sparks my interest. I also write for publication on Christian topics, and it is important to be accurate.
Some translations go back to the original language to begin, while others start with an English translation. My thought was the closer to the source, the fewer man-made errors. I also hoped that as time passed, study of Biblical languages was advancing and allowing for a more accurate translation. The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) started from scratch with the original language, published in 2004. Since then the translators have updated the text with corrections, better word choices, and revisions. The result is the Christian Standard Bible (CSB).
A few translations attempt to match the original language word-for-word, resulting in an often awkward English phrasing or sentence structure. On the other end of the spectrum from word-for-word translation is thought-for-thought. This more closely captures the meaning of what is said, and results in a more reader-friendly text. One of the best examples of this type of translation is The Message, by Eugene Peterson.
It is important to me that the translation be accurate and faithful to the original language. I didn’t want a new Bible that was going to suddenly challenge traditional Christian doctrine!
Although I wanted a translation that was different from my familiar NIV, I didn’t want a translation so vastly different it sounded foreign to me. The presenter at a women’s conference I attended a couple months ago was using the CSB. When she read a passage from the Psalms that I was familiar with from the NIV, whole phrases matched what I had committed to memory. Yet, there was a difference too. As the conference progressed I could see that these differences might just be the fresh and alive elements I was looking for in a new translation!
Study Bibles contain not just the scripture, but word studies, photographs, paintings, timelines, maps, charts, an introduction to each book, outlines, theological themes and insights, and notes. It is all right there on the page of the verse it relates to, which is a huge improvement over the e-Bible I was using! Sometimes the size of the type is made small to cram all that information. I ordered a large print edition, and the 10 pt font makes it easier on my aging eyes. This significantly increases the size of the Bible; it is big enough, as we used to say, to choke a mule.
I reasoned that I wouldn’t be carrying this heavy book back and forth to church. I have long since switched to my tablet or phone for following the pastor as he reads Scripture. The CSB would remain on my desk as a study tool.
Old habits die hard. The first time after my CSB arrived that I needed to look up a passage in a study Bible, I reached for my phone. Then I caught myself and thumbed through the CSB. I read the passage, a related note, and then skipped back to the introduction of that book. I kept going deeper and getting a more complete picture of my subject.
The CSB Study Bible offers a lot of information, and would be up to the task for a minister who does in-depth study for sermon preparation or to get ready for a Bible study class. A Bible scholar, writer like me, researcher, or the serious layman could all benefit from the CSB.
Aesthetically, it’s a beautiful book. The leather-like cover is soft and appears durable. The page edges are golden and uniformly coated, and I was pleased to note the gold did not come off on my fingers. The two place-finder ribbons can be positioned in the Old or New Testaments. I got the indexed version, but I’m not sure that’s such an important feature for me. If I were to order again, I wouldn’t include it. But I don’t think I’ll need to order for another thirty years or so. This CSB should do fine.

Holman came out with the CSB Study Bible a little while ago and I was very interested in checking this out. The more I read the CSB, the more I am liking it. From a design perspective, I really like this Study Bible and also, it appears to be made very well.

The more than 15,000 verse-level study notes in the CSB Study Bible are fairly typical of what you would expect in a study Bible. Since the CSB translation is a re-do of the HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible), it makes sense that the study notes in the CSB Study Bible are the same or at least very similar to what was in the HCSB Study Bible. I checked a handful of examples and while the formatting may vary a little bit, the content of the verse-level Study Notes seem to be the same, as do the book introductions.

In addition to the study notes, there are 368 word studies, almost 100 photographs, and also many maps, timelines, articles, illustrations and charts that comprise of the study tools. All of these are very well done and very helpful in your study of the Scriptures.

If you are looking for a solid Study Bible then I think you will find this to be a very valuable option if you are looking for a Study Bible.

Overall, I am really impressed with the CSB Study Bible and I would place it on my highly recommended list for sure. I received a copy of this Study Bible from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I would recommend this book to all who would like comparing this version with KJV. I did order the Spurgeon Commentary version in hardback too and keep this on Kindle for quick reference as well.

In 2024, I used the Christian Study Bible (CSB) for my daily Bible reading. I enjoyed reading it, and the translation was good even in very familiar passages.

The textual base for the New Testament is the Nestle-Aland 28th Edition and the United Bible Societies 5th Corrected Edition. The Old Testament text is the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia 5th Edition. The translation's goal is to provide an accurate translation in contemporary English, suitable for personal study, sermon preparation, private devotions and memorization. An allied goal is to affirm the authority of Scripture and champion its absolute truth against sceptical viewpoints. As previously stated, I found the text easily read and understood.

Other features which made using the CSB Study Bible helpful are:

* Extensive Study Notes providing historical, cultural, linguistic and biblical information to enhance the understanding of a given passage
* Helpful maps, charts, photos and illustrations that are clear and provide geographical context, important connections and illustrations of what would have been well-known to the original readers of the Biblical text.
* Word Studies that enable the reader to see a keyword and the family of words to which it is related. I found this very helpful.
* Extensive introductions to each Biblical book and assorted essays that give in-depth coverage of major biblical/theological issues. These are very helpful!

The CSB Study Bible would be an excellent addition to anyone's library and a really helpful tool for biblical understanding. A solid 4-star read!

I’ve read through the Bible every year for several decades, but never read the CSB translation. I found it very readable — it flowed well. I loved the study Bible version - excellent footnotes, extra articles, maps and graphs. My favorite aspect of all is the translations of Hebrew and Greek words scattered throughout the text.

I received a review copy from B&H Publishers for the HCSB Study Bible, Black Deluxe Leather edition.

To begin, I think the translation itself is quite good. I still feel the best translations are NKJV, ESV and NASB but the HCSB is just a step under. I see the HCSB as a translation in between ESV and NIV. Lets just say the NIV wishes it was as good a translation as the HCSB. It has an excellent readability and I think the translators did well in what they set out to do, to make an "optimal equivalence" translation.

Some things I like about the HCSB: The use of Yahweh (thank you for not using Jehovah!) instead of the standard LORD for the tetragrammaton (YHWH) in some places. Also, the proper translation of doulos as slave instead of servant/bondservant as is seen in most translations. A good example is Matthew 6:24. In the ESV for example, we read " “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." The problem with this translation (as is the case with NKJV and NASB) is, it doesn't properly reflect the Greek where we have δουλεύω which means to be a slave (doulos). One can serve hundreds of people, but you can only be a slave (doulos) to one. The HCSB translates this perfectly! “No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money."

As for the study Bible itself, the genuine cowhide leather is fantastic! The feel of it is great and it seems very durable! The pages (unlike in most study Bibles) are nice and thick, not practically see through as is the case with the ESV study Bible.

There are word studies which are very nice along with some pretty good articles which is to be expected when you have contributors like Craig Blomberg, Crag A. Evans and Daniel B. Wallace.

The only negative I see with this study Bible are the notes. They are quite basic and don't address many passages that one would desire them to. For example, you won't find anything in the notes on the oft misunderstood Hebrews 10:26. If this study Bible didn't dodge addressing many difficult passages then it would probably be the best on the market. This is where it's lacking in my opinion.

All in all, a really nice study Bible that I would give 4 stars out of 5.

This study Bible is an info-maniac’s dream! Hard to believe that I would rate any great study Bible with 4 stars but I did this time around. The reason is that I loved the CSB’s predecessor, the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB). I thought it was the best lay persons’ translation, plus study notes in existence. So really, when the CSB came out in 2017, I was surprised that Holman Publishers of Lifeway would produce a new translation. The positive about this translation in my view include:
1) I still believe it is the single best translation (highly readable) combined with study notes out there today. Some are more scholarly (like the ESV, NASB), some are dynamic (like the NIV). But this one is fit perfectly for any Christian who desires to invest themselves in spiritual growth and knowledge.
2) Like its predecessor, the CSB has a fantastic design layout and easy to follow once you get used to the system. It’s almost too good to even be distracting at times! Some pages have far more notes that biblical text (i.e. 1502-3, among others).
3) Like the HCSB, it is very readable - seems 7-8 grade level. It’s said that it was designed to compete with the ESV, but I do not agree with that having read both.
Some things not as favorable:
1) I was disappointed it did not keep the pronouns for God (to include Jesus and the Holy Spirit) capitalized. It’s an honor thing for me and always appreciated the HCSB for this.
2) Just preferences but wish they had kept “Lord of hosts” instead of “Lord of armies.” They do mean the same but the first here is a smoother and better read IMO. There were other places that the CSB made such changes as well.
3) Some translation liberties such as Ps 139:9. It took away the literal translation of “If I take up the wings of the dawn; If I dwell at the end of the sea” and changed it to, “If I’ve at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits.” I don’t see any literal reason for doing this and the first one, in my opinion is far more dynamic than the second. The translators do stuff like this at times and it’s disappointing.

Nevertheless, there is much much value to the CSB it comes in many flavors! Along with the study Bible, it has the apologetics Bible, the Spurgeon study Bible and many others. I hope people will take a look and get one of the study versions - those who do will treasure the spiritual growth and knowledge it provides. It remains my Bible of choice for daily reading.

I think we all know that studying the Bible is good, but where do you begin? The challenge to study the Bible can seem pretty daunting, am I right? That’s why I’m super excited to share some insights on the CSB Study Bible.

The original CSB Study Bible (then called the Holman Study Bible) greatly enriched my Bible study time. My husband (then fiance’) admired the Bible so much that I made sure I purchased one for him…and a number of other friends who expressed interest in taking their Bible reading to the next level.

Well now B&H Publishing has re-released the Bible with their slightly updated translation, the CSB, and revamped the inside to have even more pictures, articles, and special features. I’ll give you a tour of the CSB Study Bible so you can see for yourself. Click here to see some pics of the CSB with (hopefully) helpful descriptions. :) http://bit.ly/CSBStudyBible Oh and I received this Bible for free from B&H in exchange for an honest review.

Revelation 22:3-5 (CSB) "and there will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Night will be no more; people will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will give them light, and they will reign forever and ever."

This isn’t going to really be a review but more just letting you know what version I read and what plan I used! I picked this Bible up from Lifeway Christian bookstores right before the physical store closed. It’s a Christian Standard Bible which is the version Lifeway primarily sells. I prefer ESV but I like to read a different version every year! I used the “read scripture” app from the Bible project which breaks everything down for you with daily readings, and also companion videos that give you insight into each book and also into mega themes in the Bible. If you’re looking for a scripture reading plan going into 2021, I highly recommend this one! Let me know if you have any questions about it! For some reason it ends on the 23rd of December so I’ll probably jump into a short week long reading plan on the Bible app!

I hope my time in the word is even better in the year ahead!

A great translation, in a great format, with great notes.

This is not only a very accurate translation, but written in excellent modern English.

I have the brown leather indexed edition, and overall it is an excellent format. I particularly appreciate the bolded OT in text quotes in the NT, the index tabs for every three books, the double ribbons (one red, one black), the large and clear font, and the attractive understated single tone and excellent smelling leather cover. Unfortunately, some of the photographs printed at the beginnings of certain sections are a little blurry. Oh well, I didn't get this to be a picture book anyway.

The study notes strike a good balance of not taking up too much room, and not missing important points. Read on their own they even provide a great cohesive and short commentary for each chapter or section you might be looking at.

2022:

I started preaching. I've spoken twice at my church and was given a six week opportunity at one church and a nine week opportunity at another church (they ran consecutively)

I've preached through Psalm 19, Habakkuk, and the book of Ephesians. I think this might be where God is leading me.

My friend and mentor retired from the library.
My youngest is about 19 months, my oldest will turn 7 next month.

God is good.

Easy to Understand and Read

This version is true to the original texts, while being easy to understand today. This Study Bible is my favorite over all the others. You can read though in its easy paragraph form, and when you need a little help understanding something, or want clarification, the study notes for the verses follow each chapter. Very easy to use, designed for those who turn often to God’s word.

Over this last year I have truly come to cherish this Bible. I'd rank it up there right behind the ESV and NASB for a modern translation. I am extremely impressed with the bold printing of OT citations in the NT, and feel that this emphasis is very helpful to having a good grasp on the analogy of faith and proper biblical hermeneutics. This critique is for the text of Scripture only. The study notes were not read or considered in this review.

I really like this translation because while it is a carefully literal translation, it is easy for modern readers (unlike the KJB, which is great, but not necessarily something that is easy for every day reading). HCSB become my go-to. I like it much more than ESV or NASB, though these are pretty good as well.

A long book, but definitely worth checking out 😉

Year two of finishing a Bible-in-a-year plan. This year was a little easier than the first. Highly recommend using one of the BibleProject plans on the Bible app (or the BibleProject app) because their videos add a ton of context to the passages.
