My Heart: Every Beat Surrendered to Our Unchanging God

Rate this book
What if you were told there’s a possibility you would not be alive to see this afternoon or wake up tomorrow morning? Do you think you would live differently? How would this reality affect every single moment of the life you have been given?

Julie Manning was in the middle of giving birth to her second child when doctors noticed an irregularity in her heartbeat. Within six weeks, tests revealed it was no one-time occurrence. This ultra-capable mom, wife, marathon runner, and pediatric nurse practitioner was in active heart failure, finding herself at risk for experiencing a sudden cardiac death.

My Heart  is the first-person account of Julie’s journey from then to now—from a healthy woman’s normal expectations and self-reliance to the surrendering of her dreams, plans, and deepest desires into the hands of our unchanging God. Part retelling and reflection, part in-the moment prayer journal, her story takes you with honest vulnerability into the jaws of fear and suffering, and speaks realistic hope into your own story, leaving you with well-fought, well-placed confidence for the road ahead. It’s what her heart would like to say to you . . . about the faithful, loving, impeccably trustworthy heart of God.

Julie Manning is a wife to her beloved husband, John, mother of three fun-loving boys, and pediatric nurse practitioner. At the age of twenty-five, Julie left her career in corporate America to pursue a degree in nursing. While in nursing school, the Lord birthed a passion within Julie to care for children with heart disease. Little did she know seven years later, she would learn that her own heart was sick. The Lord’s pursuit of Julie’s heart and soul through the valley of facing many uncertainties has developed a fire within her to live intentionally from moment to moment as it may be her last.

I really liked this book. It is a good reminder about how short our lives are here on earth and how none of us knows the length of our days.
Julie has written this book very well. She does not dwell on her failing heart instead she delivers life lessons that she has found through her diagnosis and then continuing to move forward leaning on God.
Definitely would reread this book when I am going through tough times I think it would give me strength to persevere.

A personal testimonial of a wife, mother, sister, friend who almost went to meet Jesus because of a sick heart and instead got a passionate desire to serve HIM despite all odds. Oh how our view is so temporal when we should be looking towards the eternal. Testimonies like this stir my own heart.

"I had gained too much confidence that I could handle most things in my life without needing Jesus. Oh, how wrong I was! I need our unchanging God every day, every breath, every heartbeat."

Julie’s story is a powerful display of God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, and nearness in suffering. Parts of the book were a little slow, but I really enjoyed her overall message and especially the last few chapters of the book. Her story is a necessary reminder to live with intentionality and awareness of the purpose for which God created us.

This book was really good. Even if people haven’t gone through the same things as Julie her relationship with Christ is an example to everyone.

I think a universal fear of every mother is that something will happen to them while their children are young and they will be left to grow without her. I know it was an underlying fear of mine and that of my friends. In My Heart Julie Manning finds herself facing that scenario head on.

For all intents and purposes Julie's life had been relatively normal. She married the love of her life, she had a very fulfilling career, and they had a darling boy and were soon expecting a second one. Then out of left field an unknown heart condition appears.

I will admit that for the first half of this book I was in desperate need of Kleenex. Julie's story is gut-wrenching. All of those mommy fears came true. Second opinions didn't give different answers. Begging and pleading to God didn't change the circumstances. But what slowly began to emerge was beautiful. In the midst of such brokenness, healing was found. Her heart was still broken but her soul had found rest.

Julie's journey is one that we are all on. We may not have a life-threatening physical condition, but we all have broken hearts that need healing. I enjoyed Julie's willingness to let us look in on her private struggle. She allows herself to be vulnerable in order that you and I will see how Jesus broke through all the changes and became the unmovable and unchanging force in her life. You can't help but be inspired by her words and encouraged to take similar actions in your own life.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

My Heart is a touching, heart felt true story of a Mother whose life was changed by a heart condition. The words written by this author caused me to wonder how I would feel if I knew my life might be shortened due to illness. Would everyone in my life know how much I love them? What words of wisdom could I pass on to my family? I applaud this author for sharing her most special thoughts with the world. Truly a very special book. Bring the tissue box when reading this one. The love the author feels for her children is precious. I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher and this is my personal honest opinion.

Number of pages: 209

Genre: Non-fiction

Series: N/A

Age recommendation: I think it is intended for mothers or people going through struggles (like chronic illness), but I think older teens could also enjoy this book.

Summary: When Julie Manning was giving birth to her second child, doctors noticed an irregular heartbeat. After more tests, she was faced with the terrifying reality: her heart was failing. How do you live not knowing if you’ll survive to see the next day, hour, or even minute? Julie takes you into her heart and shares her struggles of living this new life of uncertainty: by surrendering everything to God and taking it one moment at a time.

My thoughts: Warning: this is a bit of a mom book. As Julie is a mom, many of her struggles revolve around not knowing whether she’ll be there for her kids, and she ends each chapter with a short message to her kids. As a teenager who is no where near this point in life, I found that part unrelatable. However, I still found the book interesting.

Julie does a great job sharing what it’s like to live with a life-threatening illness. She also does a great job at showing how it’s in times like these that we really see our need for God, but reminding the reader that we shouldn’t forget Him the rest of the time. There was a lot of helpful comments for others going through struggles. I especially liked what she had to say about being vulnerable: we don’t have to do it with everyone, but we all need a group of friends that we can know on a deeper level and share our hurts, our joys, everything that’s going on in our lives. And yeah, it’s not easy or comfortable to do that, but in putting ourselves out there we allow other people to feel at home to share with us and be vulnerable in return.

So, while this book might be a little more geared toward fellow mothers, I think there are valuable lessons there for everyone to learn.

My personal rating: 4/5 stars.

I was happy to be a part of the launch team for Manning's book, but I was surprised about how much this book affected me. I am currently going through treatment for Stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer and so am facing similar issues in regards to health and faith.

Although Manning has a message for anyone in this book--perseverance and faith despite circumstances--her story will truly resonate with those who are going through their own health challenges. She is honest about her fears and doubts, along with her anger about the whole situation. This transparency in her writing made me appreciate the book even more as she does not discount those emotions but rather shows how she moved beyond them to lasting faith.

I would highly recommend this book to any reader, both believer and non-believer. As a medical professional as well as a Christian, Manning's book provides needed information to a wide range of readers. But I most want to recommend this book to those who are ill. Please get this book. You'll be glad that you did.

This is an honest, heartfelt journey through Julie's story of heart failure. But honestly, the title does say it all on this one. She lives her life genuinely sprawled out for the Lord to use each and every single day and I don't think anyone can ever not be encouraged and moved by the way she gives herself for the Lord, especially in the moments she doesn't want to. She ends every chapter with gutwrenchingly sweet letters to her boys that even if the book were only comprised of those notes, it would have just as much impact. She is a reminder that all of our days are limited. We are all in heart failure, because none of use have been promised to live forever on earth, not do any of us know the day we will pass from here. I wish to have her dependency on God more now than ever.

One of my most favorite books ever!

What is amazing is that this story is real! This book reads like a drama, an intense fictional story, but it is a true story. Julie Manning is living this. Julie writes with such honesty and true emotions. I learned what a parent could be like with her kids when she loves Jesus. Julie shares some of her letters to her young sons, filled with hopes and prayers for them. Her life changed one day, along with the lives of her husband and son, on the day their second son was born. You do not want to miss this amazing story! I did not want to put it down, and when I finished it, I wanted to read it again!

I loved this book! One of my favourites reads in 2018. Highly recommended.
A wonderfully engaging book, that's easy to read. Julie's heart and genuine love for God and her desire to live for Him shines through on every page. What an encouraging book and powerful reminder in putting God first and that this world is temporary. We should live intentionally and with purpose. The notes/prayers to her boys at the end of each chapter are wonderful to. So real and powerful. An easy book to read yet still a lot to chew on and challenge you. I particularly love her saying of 'Jesus is better', I'll be using that a lot in my life.

Julie has beautifully written the story God has given her to tell with her life. Through this story, I am encouraged to see the opportunity in each day and to walk deeper with my creator. Such a good reminder to not take time for granted and to focus your life on the important things. I love how scripture is not just referred to or referenced but directly quoted throughout. I also love the use of Julie's journals and letters to her boys...keeping the purpose of the book true (to write her story down for her sons)...but I'm so glad she let the rest of us read it as well.

I love her perspective on life

Julie is SOO encouraging on how to pursue God and how to live our lives focused on God. This book has inspired me to live my life different, to spend more time with God, and teach my children more about God. It took me 2 days to read this book, which is pretty good considering I have 2 children under 3. I couldn't put it down. Thank you Julie for pouring your heart out on these pages and teaching me a better way to live my short life.

I heard of this book on a podcast of Jennie Allen's and went looking for it. It tells the journey of Julie and her life with heart problems. I like how she tells her story and intersperses it with letters to her young boys full of wisdom and heartfelt wishes for their future. Very inspiring.

This book was an excellent memoir of a mother who had a serious heart condition that was detected during labor with her second child. Through this trial in her life her faith was confirmed and her life story of giving glory to God renewed. For tears, motivation, and encouragement… read this one!

Julie Manning's My Heart is a mother's memoir. (Though one doesn't have to be a mother--or a nurse--to appreciate it.) Manning shares her story--her testimony. During the birth of her second child--a son--her heart stops working. Further tests reveal that her heart is in failure, and, that it could stop beating at any time, without much warning. Her life will never be the same. She's a wife, a mother--a mother of two young boys--and a Christian. This is her testimony of how she found Christ in the midst of her suffering. Of how she's able to hold onto joy and hope and peace despite all of her health issues.

Throughout the book she shares her story. But she also shares some of her journal entries and some letters she's written to her sons. These letters to her sons are by necessity emotional masterpieces. How could you read them and not be touched?!

This book may not be theology proper, but, I'd argue that it is theology lived out. Readers need both.

Favorite quotes:
"We do not need to die in order to experience Jesus; we just need to stop, pause, and cease striving long enough to need Him, love Him, and rest in Him."

"Our sufferings do not produce belief or unbelief of the Lord in our lives; rather our sufferings will reveal our belief or unbelief in Jesus."

"What would our lives look like if we really did live with our life’s brevity at the forefront of our mind? Would we pursue the temporary, or would we pursue the eternal?"

"When you fail to take all of the emotions and heartaches and fears of your present circumstances to the Lord, just for the sake of numbing yourself, you are telling God that you believe He messed up and that He did not know what He was doing."

"Yes, the risk of vulnerability can be scary. It is true that the Holy Spirit often leads us into areas where we feel vulnerable. But we can go there because in God we have eternal security. Though it feels “dangerous” to walk in this direction, we are already safe in the embrace of God’s powerful love—so no place is truly dangerous for us. And, when the Holy Spirit leads us to be vulnerable, God shows up and blesses us through it with His peace and freedom."

" In the midst of suffering, we will look one of two places. We will either look at the suffering, and we will doubt God; or we will look at God and read the promises of His Word, and it will cause us to cry out to Him in utter desperation, leaning on Him as the One who is able to see us through our circumstances."

"I absolutely believe it is not only possible for us to experience hope and joy in the midst of suffering but that God desires to show us that He alone is our only hope and our only source of fulfilling joy."

"Do I believe that God being in control is better than me being in control? Do I believe that following God’s leading is better than my own comfort?"

"Our sufferings do not negate God’s call on our life to love Him and love others."

"We share our stories to remember God’s faithfulness. We share our stories to direct our hearts back to what is important in this life as we feel the tug to drift away from a surrendered posture unto the Lord to a life of selfsufficiency. This life is not about us. Rather, this life is about Jesus. This life is not about our individual lives but about the day when the entire big “C” Church body is in the same place at the same time for eternity surrounding the throne of God, proclaiming “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God, the Almighty” (Rev. 4:8). We are not yet home, but rest assured, we WILL be home one day. Until then we must battle against complacency and against comfort and against taking things into our own hands of control. Even when we seek Jesus fervently. Even when we rely on the Lord for every ounce of energy and sustaining breath. "

"We can only view this life through the lens of the gospel of Jesus to the extent in which we know and believe the gospel itself."

"The more time we spend putting God’s Word into our minds, the more His Word will become our thoughts. The more Scriptures we study, the more we will learn about our God’s character. The more times we read through God’s redemption story for His people, which is you and me, the more our hearts will humbly rejoice in the grace poured out upon our souls. The Lord has much work to do in our lives. He accomplishes this work through His Word, the working of His Holy Spirit, and the presence of other believers in our lives. The more time we spend reading about Jesus, the more we will view this life and all of this life’s circumstances with the perspective that this place is not our forever home."

This book was SO good. It's the first-person account of a young mom who finds herself in active heart failure. The book is a combination of a retelling of her story, her prayer journal during her most difficult days, and the letters she writes to her two young boys as she faces the very real possibility of death at an early age. This book challenged me, encouraged men, and made me cry! Julie has a beautiful way with words, and it was a gift to be able to read her honest thoughts and struggles in the midst of deep suffering, yet at the same time her total reliance and trust in a faithful and loving God. Highly recommend!

**I received a digital copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Introduction
This book tells the story of one mother's journey through life-threatening health issues, growing a family, and ministering to others. Julie's heart for others is incredibly powerful, even as her physical heart is failing.

The story
Julie Manning was undergoing a cesarean section when suddenly things began to go very wrong. As a pediatric nurse, Julie had cared for mothers and children in similar conditions, but never imagined she’d face heart failure herself. Over the following weeks, months, and years, Julie would have to learn to live with her life-threatening heart condition. She had multiple heart attacks and scares, and yet she still followed the Lord’s leading to go to Haiti and lend her nursing skills to the crisis there. Every chapter tells a bit more of her story, but it also delves deep into the vulnerability of her emotional heart and her walk with God. Julie talks at length about reconciling her strong desire to be there for her sons with the knowledge that her heart could give out at any moment. Most Christians will say that they desire to go be with the Lord; few are as painfully honest as Julie about the desire to stay on earth long enough to see dreams come true (e.g. to see her boys come to the Lord, get married and raise families of their own). Every chapter ends with a sweet letter from Julie to her three sons. This book will tug at your heart-strings (no pun intended) with every single page.

Literary analysis
Julie writes beautifully and personally. The emotions are raw, and the vulnerability is palpable. The biblical applications are sound, and thankfully so is the grammar.

Conclusion
I don't want to say too much more about this book because really you have to read it to understand it. It's powerful in a way that no other book I've read has been. It cuts deep on an emotional level and challenges the reader to take a serious look at their own life. Am I grateful for everything I have? Am I cherishing my family and doing everything I can to create beautiful memories? Am I doing everything in my power to point my family, especially my children, to Christ in the small amount of time I may have with them?

READ THIS BOOK. You won't regret it, but you just may walk away changed.

I first heard Julie Manning speak at IF gathering and that is when I knew I had a story to tell. She was the one person in the room that my heart resonated with so deeply, I knew I could not keep my secret any longer. I knew my life wasn't my own and that God had a plan for every single moment of suffering that I was going through. It was from that moment on after hearing her speak; I chose to live. It was uncomfortable to share with others and uncomfortable to not only share, but to take risks, entirely rely on God in places that I never wanted to before and he met me exactly at the point of my need and still does today.

When I was give the opportunity to My Heart: Every Beat Surrendered to Our Unchanging God I immediately jumped at the opportunity. Julie was the gal that made me share my story, so I was ready to hear more of hers. Julie is a brave soul who bares everything leaving nothing for one to guess. She is all in! You can't pick up this book and wonder what is left, because she writes it all down. She gives the simple mundane and the raw emotions. This book will make you want to cling closer to your husband, it will make you realize that flooded houses and materialistic things don't matter, but a heart that beats only for following God does. The soul thing we all should be looking towards is Heaven. This place is not our home. While we get to be here and live in this place we should be good stewarts, but this is not our final destination and Julie makes it really clear that earth is not her final home. Julie's heart could stop at anytime, so she fully and completely relys on God every second, of every single day. This book will change the way you view your maker, relationships, time, money and people. It will help you to evaluate your priorities and make your more Kingdom minded. I also loved the journal that came with this book. It made me more mindful about praising God for all the things He has done in my life. This book will change your heart and draw you closer to Jesus. I give this book 10/5 stars. I was given a copy by the author for being apart of her street team and was not required to give a positive review.

This is a memoir, a journal, a love letter too. Beautifully written prayers of desperation, of unbelief, of raw emotion. The author laid her heart out bare in this book. It is real. It is not sugar coated. It's not all happiness and faith. I feel like I can relate to the author on so many levels. Not because I have a heart condition but because these emotions and struggles she deals with in the book are real everyday every one kind of struggles. What she learned and wrote about in the book can be applied by everyone in any struggle. I want my heart to beat hard after my savior. Read this book!

A touching story of the author is told after the birth of her second son that she has a heart condition and her time is short. How she ends up trusting in God as she writes words of wisdom to her boys.

A story of survival and knowing what is really important in the end. A spiritual and heartwarming story.
