While this felt a little short and not quite as focused, I still really enjoyed it. I can't quite put my finger on it but it reminds me so much of Giant Days in Montreal with mutants. It just has that same sense of fun and whimsy I guess.
Today has just been a day! It's been a day of chaos and mini-crisis that could have been averted with just a bit of communication (you all know the kind I am talking about) and it has just made me tired. Which is why I am planning to just curl up tonight in front of all my pretty Christmas decorations and lights with a big mug of hot chocolate and try to relax. That relaxing may take place in the form of reading (I am trying to finish The Lost Hero before the end of the year but I am having the usual struggle I have with Percy Jackson books, (yes I know this is not one of the main Percy Jackson books but I have this bad habit of calling all of Rick Riordan's books Percy Jackson books) but we will talk more about that in the review for that book)! Or the relaxing may take place in the form of watching television or playing a game. I am not really sure yet! In the meantime, I did want to talk about Nuclear Winter Volume Two which I did finish recently and enjoy more than the first volume!
SPOILERS AHEAD
In this volume, we get to see so much more of Flavie's life and meet her sister! We also get to see more of Flavie and Marco which is pretty cute. As the nuclear winter continues to rage on Flavie's sister comes for a visit. She used to live here just like Flavie but moved as the winter continued to get worse. She is the fun wild child of the family who is here to get Flavie out of her shell and out of her house. However, with her arrival comes some unexpected trouble that she thought she left behind when she moved. Flavie also must make a risky delivery run for Marco in this volume. Marco is sick and the only medicine he needs to get better is nowhere to be found. Someone keeps stealing the medical supplies and not only is it keeping Marco from getting better Flavie is running out of medicine that is essential to keeping her well. Can Flavie save the day and help her sister get out of past trouble?
I already said it above but I loved this volume so much more than the first one and I can not really pinpoint why. The art style was the same but I still really loved it. Many of the characters were still the same (we did get introduced to a few new ones who I really liked so maybe that was part of why I loved this one so much). But I think overall what really did it for me with this volume was the story. The first volume had a lot of world-building and establishing what was going on with the nuclear winter as well as dos and don'ts of the winter. So when it came to this volume you already knew all of that stuff and could jump into some character-driven action-packed plot! Reading this volume definitely sold me on giving the next one a chance (if there is a third one), I am actually really excited to pick it up! I am giving this one five stars on Goodreads, and if you have been considering this one give it a chance!
It is time for a new day in Canada’s forever winter… and this time we get a new character!
I am so so hyped that Amazon FINALLY had this book in stock again, it has been MONTHS and I was constantly staring at it and hoping that it would be in stock. And in February it was time! It was in stock! And I could continue reading.
It pretty much continues where we left in the previous volume! Flavie trying to get through her day, leaving her comfortable house to go and deliver or find stuff! There is even one big quest for Marco, you know the guy she likes and who likes her though she is completely denying it, because he needs some cough syrup and it is nowhere to be found. I just loved that Flavie went through such big lengths to find an item that someone needed. She is really fabulous character and I love how hard she works. I do have to say I was worried about her, because Flavie needs her meds for the mutagenic effects. We see that it is really flaring up and I just wanted to go on a quest for her! To find some meds!
We also have a new character and I have to say that it took well up until the middle/end before I started liking her. Meet Elsie, Flavie’s younger sister! Why I didn’t like her? Well, I am just not into characters who barge into homes without letting people know in advance and then expect that people have everything ready and are also all ready to party. Girl, what? No. Just No. I would have acted the same way as Flavie. Hello, if I worked all day long in freezing cold and harsh circumstances there is no way I am going to party or do much at the evening hours. Plus, I don’t know, something just wasn’t sitting right with me with Elsie. And later we find out what that is and I just couldn’t help but go I was right!! As the end neared I did start to like Elsie a bit more. She showed that she truly cared about her sister and I loved that she was there when things went out of hand. That she kicked some serious ass. I also liked that she found out how Flavie felt about the postcards. While her personality/actions weren’t my thing, I do love her design. Her hair is absolutely amazing! I wish I could have pink hair! The shaved parts I do have, but the colour, man, I wish~
I also love that Marco and Flavie are getting closer! I hope for more of that in the next volume~ crosses fingers
I just love how much action and excitement there is and I was also happy to meet an old friend, who seemingly still loves bagels (same little dude, same).
All in all, I flew through this graphic novel and I will be buying (or at least trying) the next volume soon~ I need more of this series, more of these characters!
In the second volume, we get to meet Flavie’s younger sister Elsie. And we get a polar raccoon update! This was a fun addition to the series because we get more character development, and see other effects of a long term nuclear Winter.
There is a medicine shortage because of shipments getting stolen, but being the best courier there ever was, Flavie knows exactly just what to do!
Not a lot happening in this volume. Basically Flavie trying to get cough syrup for annoying Marco while her sister is in town. The first volume was much stronger. Also: What happened to her boyfriend? I would have liked to see her ditching his lazy ass, actually. Moving on to volume three which looks more promising.
Flavie continues to be the adorable hard working courier we met in the previous volume. In this arc, we meet Flavie’s sister who’s back from California, and wants to reconnect with her sister. This series is light and cute which makes this an enjoyable read. I like that we got some character development for Flavie when she admitted that she missed her family and her choice to hold on to the hurt of her parents’ divorce has isolated and stunted her growth. By the end of the volume, Flavie gets a haircut and has taken some time off which speaks volumes of where she was at the start of the series. And, to add a cherry on top, she asked Marco out for a date which he accepted!
Ihan luettava. 3 tähteä.
This is the kind of sweet, friend-centric fun that I'd come to expect from a Boom! comic, and for the most part Nuclear Winter is an enjoyable, if not especially deep read that feels like what we'd get if we mashed up Steven Universe and Gamma World. The big issue here, really, is that the whole thing ends right as it is just getting interesting, and as the narrative and its characters start having some real weight to them. Not everything needs to be 30 volumes long, but Nuclear Winter cut itself short at only three volumes.
Flavie’s boyfriend is gone, but so is her best friend Léonie, which I found disappointing. While we are introduced to Elsie, Flavie’s spunky younger sister, I don’t know why Léonie had to be booted to make room in the narrative for her. When Marco, the love interest, gets sick Flavie is tasked with finding him the medicine he needs. She discovers that a group of people living in a nearby mountain resort are stealing the medicine before it arrives in Montreal. The two sisters, plus the mutant raccoon from the first book, put an end to that! This story felt a bit off, as we get hints that the sister’s father is dead, but then find out he is alive and Flavie just avoids both her divorced parents. That plot thread seemed like a bait & switch- not cool.
I LOVED Flavie's sister, a character with some much-needed energy and motivation and color. I almost wish the stories were about Elsie instead of Flavie, she totally stole the show.
I loved the criminal gang's hideout and the woods and the whole setting and journey. And the deeper background with family and the expansion of the lore and the sentimentality and development of the new snowmobile and the mutant raccoon from volume 1.
In this sequel to last year's Vol 1 we meet Flavie's younger sister. This opens the door to learn more about the rest of Flavie's family and the dynamic between them. It sheds a lot light on her character and why she is the way she is. I continue to enjoy this series and am looking forward to finding out what happens next!
There’s a time jump between Volumes One and Two, some characters have disappeared, new ones introduced. It made it hard for me to find the continuation when it’s ten pages in and someone says “oh, so and so moved away.” Still love the art and basically setting a YA lifestyle story in the middle of a nuclear winter.
This book was just as fun as the first volume. Flavie finds a new adventure with her sister as they try and find essentials during year 10 of the nuclear winter. Familiar characters but a completely new story line. Loved it!
