A wonderful little book!

3.5 stars on my Children's book blog. The illustrations are good, not fantastic, but average. The story moves a long at a good pace and there is a lesson about things not having to be perfect to have a great time. It was nicely entertainingly.

On the first day of summer vacation, Piper Periwinkle invites her best friend, Lily, to come over. When Piper’s mother advises that it might rain, Piper is undeterred from her plans of having the perfect picnic in the park with Lily. Piper picks out her favorite outfit to wear to the picnic, but when Lily arrives, she also worries that it might rain. Piper and Lily play many games outside while Piper’s mother finishes packing the picnic basket. As they lie on their backs and watch the clouds, a dark cloud puts a dampener on their plans when rain comes pouring down! Still undeterred, Piper’s new plans make her picnic much more fun, as no rain cloud can ruin her spirits. Piper and Lily play many indoor games after Piper holds her first-ever indoor picnic. At the end of the day, nothing can take away Piper’s smile when she thinks of how much fun she’d had that day with her best friend and her family.

I found myself smiling also while reading this book. Susanne Blumer and Annaliese Blumer have shown children that rain does not have to ruin the day, if only you use your imagination. Although Piper had the whole day planned, all she needed to do was move the fun and games inside the house, playing dress-up and cards without the worry of the rain pouring down. In this day and age of video games and smart phones, it is quite refreshing to see such wonderful ideas produced with beautiful, color illustrations bringing the story to life. I applaud the authors and illustrator on an outstanding book and recommend that Piper Periwinkle and the Perfect Picnic be stocked in school, home and day-care libraries to be read aloud at story time, showing all children that the only tool you need for a great game is your imagination.

Piper has the perfect picnic planned out and then it rains. What will she do?
A lovely children's book that teaches children that you can try and find a solution to a problem. Piper and Lily had an indoor picnic and had lots of indoor fun making sure the rain didn't spoil the day.
Lovely illustrations and my son really enjoyed listening to the story, turning the pages amd asking questions. X
