Larson unfolds his book with an overview of two surviving architects from 1893 Chicago world fair who were travelling overseas on April 12, 1912. Both of the travellers were on the ship known as R.M.S Olympic, under the ownership of White star line. One of them were Daniel Hudson Burnham and the other was one of the three architects still alive known as Francis Millet. Both of them were travelling in the opposite direction, each of them on one of the Olympics’ sister ship. Burnham and Millet continued to endure their friendship. Burnham was trying to send a Telegram to his friend Francis when he came to know that the ship on which Millet was travelling met with an accident and the Olympic had to change their direction to assist and help them.

Overall Larson tries to give the readers a distinct perspective about the prominent and marvelous world fair. There were several administrative and regulatory issues which were creating a hindrance in the launch of this fair. It crossed all there hurdles and was launched successfully; it had an overall 27.5 million visitors for over 6 months when America’s current population on 1893 was only 65 million. The main motive of the fair was to show the ongoing magnificent changes in the technological and architectural sector in the modern country. Cracker Jacks and shredded wheat were new into the food industry. The grand exhibit hall represented the great monumental achievements from history which had vast interior space to showcase St. Paul’s Cathedral, Madison Square Garden, the Great Pyramid, the U.S Capital Building and Winchester Cathedral. Alongwith the marvelous achievement of the world fair, it also carried tragic events where several workers died while creating the fair, an outbreak of huge fire, an assassination and the rise of America’s first serial killer who took many lives. In this story, Lucas walks us through the details of how one can make things or destroy it. The whole story is mainly focused on two characters where one man has a great potential to create things and the other is capable of eliminating things by destroying them, both of them were operating aptly in the onset of Modern American’s grand fair.
