I've been ferociously tracking down all of Rihito's works because of Seven Days. So yeah, I'm addicted. Let's just hope I don't turn into an Erika.*

Fleur et sens collects two short stories that expand and complement the universe created by Rihito Takarai in Only the Flower Knows.

The first story, Fleurs et sens, focuses on Professor Tsujimura's youth and on his long-standing connection, through the enduring love for his friend Akira Hasumi, with Shōta Misaki.

The second story, Floraison, looks at Misaki and Yôichi Arikawa deepening relationship after graduating and moving in together.

Both stories present an image of love and relationships that is far from being simplistic or sugar-coated. The social differences between Tsujimura and Akira and the anxiety and insecurity complicating Misaki's reactions when confronted with Arikawa sincere and indisputable affection create a series of barriers and misunderstandings that are only overcome through open confrontation and communication.

Despite their brevity and relatively simple storylines, both episodes in the book are highly effective in adding nuances and traits to characters whom the readers are probably already familiar with, and the glimpses Takarai provides about Arikawa's family or Tsujimura's past help clarifying some of the questions left open at the end of Only the Flower Knows.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this book that - needless to say - features yet more amazing drawings by Takarai.

Don't read it if you haven't yet read the three previous volumes in these characters' stories but, by all means, don't miss out on it once you've done with those!

Story 5/5

5☆ Review:

“𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍, 𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑰 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖.”

Oh my god, I wasn’t expecting that sort of ending. I didn’t sign up for tragic gays and now I’m sad! But…I loved it.

Seeing more of Misaki and Arikawa’s lives was just what I needed to help cure some of that sadness.

This is definitely my favorite volume in the series!

After going over this book and the series- I found out I’m reading this series out of order, that being said I’m glad I started with this one. First of all even though it wasn’t super heavy on the spice, it was still good, like gentle romantic good and I was both surprised by that and surprised I liked it. Second, this couple and their relationship explains the exact relationship I’m currently in, so everything was so relatable and that helped me process everything even further, which was a lot of fun to do. I kept saying “That’s how I feel!” Or “That’s what I said!” Super cute, super fun, super loved it.

Well, the backstory bits sure were tragic.

We finally learn more about Misaki's lab professor, Tsujimura, although not in the way I had expected. He'd grown up as the second son in a prominent family; his older brother was expected to take over the family medical business, so Tsujimura was free to do what he wished, with little in the way of family expectations weighing on him.

When he was ten years old, he met a boy who'd been peering into his garden, wanting to look at the flowers. For the next five years, they were inseparable best friends - until Tsujimura told Akira he was in love with him.

It seems they didn't really speak again until they started university, with Tsujimura attending the same school and the same department as Akira, despite having no real interest in agriculture. After a few more misunderstandings and missed opportunities, Akira finally confesses that he'd loved Tsujimura all along, but he couldn't let himself explore that or enter into a relationship because since he was a child, he'd been promised in marriage to the daughter of a family who'd done everything for his family.

It's a older era story, with all the limitations and expectations that a lot of people simply couldn't throw away in order to live their own lives. So Akira and Tsujimura have a few short days together, then part ways again with those memories.

And it turns out that Akira was Misaki's grandfather...which honestly leaves me with a lot more questions, like: since they were at the same university, did they ever speak, or did they maintain their distance for all those decades? What happened in Tsujimura's personal life? Did he find happiness of his own, or is he still pining for his old lost love?

I don't know...it's a bittersweet story that has its own sort of beauty (although it's not an ending I'm particularly fond of), but I'm not sure how well it fit into this series.

There is sort of a past/present divide in this volume, though, with the second half returning to the younger Misaki and Arikawa, showing that with the passage of time, you can find happiness - and retain your family's love and connections - even if you follow a nontraditional path.

Still did not explain the magical dreams at all! ButI liked Arikawa's family accepting and embracing Misaki, and Misaki being able to gain a new family after having lost all of his.

Mixed feelings about this volume and this series, but I do see the overall idea behind it now, and the deeper stories that were embedded in an otherwise fairly predictable plotline.

This prequel story should be read after the Only the Flower Knows Vol. 1 series.

This story is about professor Tsujimura Motoharu and his childhood friend Hazumi Akira, when they went to university. Even if Akira has kept his distance from Motoharu since Motoharu confessed his feelings for him, Motoharu still choose to enter the same university and department as Akira.

The professor seems to be a kind and caring man in the original series, and this manga prequel tells his story as a young man, and his story is very much connected to the original story, and not only because the professor works at the plant microbiology lab at the university that Misaki and Arikawa goes to.

This story is so bittersweet. Motoharu and Akira isn’t really close when the story starts, since Akira has kept his distance from him. Just when they start to become closer again, you start to think this will turn into a happy love story, and then the story takes a turn and turns very bittersweet.

W stolicy kwiatów Ӝ̵̨̄

Gdy Tsujimura otwarcie informuję go o tym, Hasumi odrzuca go, a złamane serce Motoharu podpowiada chłopakowi, aby ten złagodził swój ból w towarzystwie alkoholu oraz urodziwych gejsz.

„W stolicy kwiatów” to przyjemny spin-off składający się z pięciu krótkich rozdziałów.

This would have been a lot more enjoyable if I'd known it was a prequel to another series prior to reading. As it was, I was a bit confused because I don't think it fully stands alone. It comes close, but doesn't actually make it without the three volumes of Only the Flower Knows. Instead, this volume is a collection of two short stories, one that occurs two generations before the main story, and doesn't have a happy ending; then another that skips forward to an epilogue for a love story that I have no context for and isn't about the characters I've just been introduced to (presumably the plot for OTFK).

As it is, I was disappointed by how short the prequel story was, and then didn't have time to appreciate the bittersweetness of the romance because of the sudden shift into the second, disconnected story. Overall, the art is beautiful, and the stories and setting are very delicate and romantic, but these two stories together don't make a cohesive volume.

This is basically two stories in 1.
. At The Flower Capital - The story of Tsujimura sensei's love that sadly never got it's happy ending

. When The Flower Blooms - The continuation of Misaki and Arikawa's story where they've graduated, found jobs and moved in together

Your feelings are overflowing within me. And if someday, you were to disappear and I never saw you again, I'm sure I could live off of these feelings alone.
Next year, and the year after that, and every year following, I will watch the flowers bloom with you

All the stars to this prequel/sequel mashup maybe I just should call it a companion volume to Only The Flower Knows.
All the stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This volume consists of two stories - one story about two childhood friends, Akita & Motoharu which ultimately crushed my heart (I cried so much….) - and one short follow up story about Misaki & Arikawa from Only The Flowers Knows and that one was just sweetest sweet to ever sweet… 🥰🥰
.
The art is top notch. And the stories emotional.
I’m all a sobbing mess right no gosh… all the feels…

This was a reread for me and its even better now as i read this originally in high school. But now that im older i feel so much deeper. Motoharu and akira broke my heart. Ugly violent tears were shed they always have to the main story. One of the most beautiful stories ive ever read. And the short story about masaki and arikawa. So cute and happy. I have also read only the flower knows multiple times over and this story always makes me grin like a fool i love them. Id give more stars if the stars want higher i love rihito takarai shes one of my favourite mangakas ever. Love you miss takarai

To be honest, I liked this prequel more than the main series. There are two short stories in this one, one about young Professor Tsujimura, which manages to be incredibly bittersweet and still hopeful at the same time. The other one is a future snapshot of Misaki and Arikawa's life together that's very sweet and heart-warming. The shortness really helps to keep the stories contained and more focused, while still being beautiful.

WHEN I TELL YOU I SOBBED.
I will never fucking recover. The grandpas didn’t get their happy ending. They got four days of bliss that’s it and when he saw his grandson for the first time I broke, I couldn’t contain myself but I guess if you think about it if they had ended up together then Misaki wouldn’t have been born. In my imagination, the grew to be old men together watching the flowers bloom every spring

Kind of disappointing honestly. I really like other works by this mangaka, but the story for this one felt too bare and simplistic. I don't really know these characters or care for them as much as I should, and being one volume isn't an excuse, I've read other short manga before that pack a punch. And to top it all off, the melancholic tone was just not what I wanted at all.

Prequel/Sequel to "Only the Flower Knows"...this mangaka artist really likes her flower theme!...this prequel was a heartbreaking story but to have it tie in to what happens generations later in Misaki's and Arikawa's relationship just brings the story so much more hope and warmth. Love, love, love Rihito Takarai!!

Honestly for all of the good reviews I thought this would be better, but I was really underwhelmed. The art is really well done, but the story goes by too quickly and honestly? It's not a good story. The plot is lacking, and there are a lot of parts that don't make sense. The translation was poorly done, but even so. I didn't really enjoy it.

I didn't realise this was a prequel. I feel I did the author (ans myself as a reader) a huge injustice by not doing my homework properly, I got a bit lost when the story switched from one storyline to the next. I will definitely be reading the original works and then re-visiting this story.
Beautiful but heartbreaking.
