Catrin is at the top of his list, he knows that she was one of the last people his friend saw and he must find her. But Catrin is not what he expected, innocent yet full of secrets. Plot and Story Line
Windswept is a reissue of a book that Sabrina Jeffries wrote under the name "Deborah Martin". You fall into this story very quickly, which is not a surprise since its one of her older books of course. I did really enjoy the setting and the historical background that we become introduced into. There is a small and tiny mystical element surrounding the Chalice and a curse that was placed on Catrin's family. Basically every woman in her family that marries, the man they marry will die in some way. I really liked this twist in the story but the villain that comes into the story, is not what you expect to see. And yeah he is a pretty psychotic and obsessed element. The romance between Catrin and Evan is quite endearing. I love the way these two connect, from the beginning. Even though they are both keeping secrets from each other, they have such powerful chemistry. I really loved the way these two find so much they both need in each other. Our hero, has struggled with acceptance and being good enough in his life. Our heroine, has lost quite a bit in her young life. I did like how will do anything for a chance for love and to be able to hold onto it. And my favorite side characters were Rhys and Julianna (our couple from book one) and I love their quirkiness and solid support of Evan and Catrin. I also really liked the Welch cultural aspect of the story, since our hero is Welch and boy I liked that. Rough around the edges but soft and sweet on the inside. A sweet and mysterious love story that you fall quickly for.

Life without you is no life at all

The Cover
So pretty and classic...I love the way her dress flows. Quite a beautiful reissued cover. And even though I like the older one too...they are both different.
Overall View
Windswept is a passionate and charming story of Welch culture, a dangerous mysterious element, a bit of magic, and a whole lotta love and passion to get a kick out of!!! TRULY WONDERFUL!

It's been a while since I indulged in a regency romance, so I was looking forward to this one. It's a rather "plotty" romance with strong sub-plots (besides the romance), which is something I quite like. I also enjoyed the fact that it involved unusual elements and places--a small town in Wales, ancient Druidic curses, and a 'magic' chalice.

Despite the Druids and the chalice, this book is straight-up regency romance and doesn't delve too far into fantasy. The heroine is Catrin who comes from a Welsh family allegedly descended from Morgana, a Welsh Druidic priestess/part fairy. Catrin lives a normal regency heroine sort of life running her estate, but she's shy and tender-hearted. When her first husband is killed on her wedding day, Catrin looks into her family history and discovers that Morgana, angry about her daughter marrying a common tradesman, created a chalice and a curse, dooming any future marriages unless the bride drinks from the chalice on her wedding day to show her respect for the old gods. Catrin buys into the curse whole-heartedly, and decides to hunt down and buy back the chalice before she ever attempts to marry again. Unfortunately, after she buys the chalice in London, the young aristocrat who sold it to her is murdered.

The hero, Evan, is a Cambridge scholar in ancient legends, and he goes to see Catrin supposedly in that context, but really he's looking into the death of his friend, the man who sold Catrin the chalice.

The plot has plenty of danger/obstacles including the true murderer, another man who has his heart set on Catrin and is quite nasty, and various instances of stealing/regaining the chalice. The romance aspect comes on fairly heavily from the first time Evan sees Catrin (she happens to rise out of the lake in the mist since she was, coincidentally, out for a swim). There's a fair amount of sex in the book.

At 20% I loved the story. The writing is quite good and every scene feels like it needs to be there. As I said, there's quite a bit of story in the story, and there isn't a lot of filler or meandering, which is good. I was engaged and read through the book in 2 days. I loved the villains and the Druid/chalice aspects of the story a great deal. The romance was good, though both h and H are pretty deeply flawed characters.

I took off one star because there were several things about the story that bothered me. Catrin continually lies, which the reader knows is a very bad idea, and while I could understand her desire to protect herself initially, after awhile I just wanted to smack her for it. It was so clearly going to blow up in her face. And then, when it did, the hero behaves abominably. He really lost my sympathies there. The thing that bothered me the most, however, was

Despite these nits, it was a fun read that really kept my attention and made me want to read more Sabrina Jeffries. If you enjoy plotty regency romances I can recommend Windswept.

I adored STORMSWEPT, so I was excited to read this. However, it's just not pulling me in. I didn't like how the leads first met and the overemphasis on the heroine's physical attractiveness. Not only that, she is a VIRGIN WIDOW, a trope I severely detest. I don't find the plot itself all that interesting, so I've decided not to finish this one.

*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*

**NOTE** This review is for the revised, re-released 2017 version of Windswept by Sabrina Jeffries - the original was published under her pseudonym of Deborah Martin. I have not read the original book, so I have no idea what has changed from that edition to this one.

I liked this book, but not nearly as much as the first book Stormswept. This book features Evan Newcome, who was a child in the previous book and Catrin Price aka The Lady of the Mists.

Catrin is a widow and has recently learned of a curse on her family. Any woman of the line that marries without drinking from an ancient chalice at her wedding is doomed to be a widow within three years. The problem is her great-grandfather sold the chalice years ago and since that time, all the women who married, have lost their husbands, including Catrin. Catrin tracks down the chalice and travels to London to buy it. She later learns that the man she bought it from was murdered. Worried that she will be accused of the murder, she tells no one of her meeting and returns to Wales.

Evan is all grown up now and a professor at Cambridge. When his best friend is murdered, he returns to Wales to track down the Lady of Mists as she was the last person Justin was supposed to meet that night. Enroute he stops at his village and visits his father's grave, this is where he runs into Lady Juliana and she convinces him to come to lunch with her and Rhys. Evan asks the Vaughan's about the Lady of the Mists, but doesn't tell them exactly why he is looking for her.

Evan sets out to track down Mrs. Price and based on the information from Juliana & Rhys, he assumes that she is an old woman. On his way to her home, he sees a young woman swimming in the lake and is captivated and convinces her to show him the way to the house. At first Catrin is willing to help him, but when she realizes that it is her he is looking for, she panics.

From here there are a lot of lies told, by both of them, and even though there is a connection, the reader has to wonder how in the world these two are going to get a HEA.

Personally, I really didn't like Catrin, she is not your typical HR heroine, she is very timid and shy. I also had a hard time understanding her need to lie, repeatedly. Evan wasn't much better and I had a hard time reconciling the sweet, bright boy from the previous book with the angry, judgmental young man in this book.

The villain was pretty obvious to me from the start, but Ms. Jeffries did a good job of keeping his motivations secret until the very end.

In closing, the story was good, but not as good as I had hoped. But it is well written, flows well, has a couple of steamy love scenes, life or death moments and it was great catching up with Juliana and Rhys.

This is part of the Wales series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title.

"If any woman of thy lineage doth not drink of the cup at her wedding, her husband shall die within three years of her wedding."

FINAL DECISION:  The book has an elegance and a more serious tone than other books by Jeffries.  I really enjoyed these characters and the journey they took because while there are many secrets and deceptions between them, there is a joy and lightness that surrounds this couple.

THE STORY:  Catrin Price is a Welsh widow with a family death curse.  If she does not drink from a druid cup at her wedding, her husband will die within three years.  That has already happened to Catrin and she knows that if she wants to fulfill her desire for a husband and family, she must recover the cup.  She manages to track it down but when she gets it, the man from whom she purchased it is murdered.  Evan Newcome is a scholar who is looking for the woman last seen with his friend. He believes that she might have something to do with his death and is determined to find out the truth.

OPINION:  This book has two elements that I really liked: the characters connection to one another and the ending which pushes the characters into an uneasy situation where love must overcome fear.

These two characters have a difficult road.  Catrin and Evan come to one another with lies and deceptions.  Both are lying and concealing information.  As they begin to build their relationship, these lies threaten the possibility of any true connection between them.  Catrin is a woman determined to overcome the notorious legacy of her family. She takes risks which stretch her understanding of who she is. She makes choices which take her close to the line of doing wrong. Evan is also on a mission. He is determined to avenge his friend's death. He is willing to do whatever it takes -- lies are just the beginning.  But he doesn't count on falling for Catrin. Just when it seems that the two might have untangled their lives, the external threats arise.

I found this story very exciting and liked that it operated to push the two main characters into revealing more about themselves and to grow closer to one another. In the best twist of the book, the plot devise strips the main characters of the expected resolution to the story. As the final chapter closes, the characters have to put their faith in love and one another and trust that life will be good to them.  There are no guarantees for these characters, but don't worry my friends, things work out very well for them in the end.

WORTH MENTIONING:  This is a revised and reissued version of the book by the same name originally written by this author under the name of Deborah Martin.  Make sure you don't already have it in your collection before buying it!

CONNECTED BOOKS:  WINDSWEPT is the second book in the Welsh series.  It is not necessary to read the other book first (I didn't!).  This book can operate as a standalone.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 4.5 stars.

NOTE:  I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to provide a review.  I was not required to write a positive review.  All opinions contained herein are my own. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

This is an early book from Sabrina Jeffries, whose stories I absolutely love. Unlike her other books, this one has a mystical element and Welsh mythology, one type of mythology I’ve never read before. As with her other stories, the characters and story were well written. I enjoyed every bit of it. I highly recommend.

A romance with something extra
4 stars

This is another of Sabrina Jeffries’ reissues from her days writing as Deborah Martin. These books aren’t as light and humorous as her later works but still retain her unique writing style and delightful love and passion.

This is the second book in the Wales series, after Stormswept, but each book does stand alone. Evan featured in the first book as a young boy, and the couple from Stormswept - Rhys and Juliana - feature in Windswept albeit slightly older.

I’m already a huge fan of Sabrina Jeffries so immediately the writing style appealed to me. It’s descriptive without being flowery and pulls you into the story from the first page.

I also adored Catrin from the very first page. I could hugely relate to her and I loved the way that she was portrayed as very strong but also shy and a little bit geeky. It also made me laugh that she often cried throughout the story (but not in an annoying, weak way) as I am also a complete watering pot on occasion. Okay, all the time!

Now, don’t get me wrong with what I’m about to say next but I didn’t really like Evan quite as much as I did Catrin. I did like him, but there were times that he annoyed the socks off me. I don’t mind that he had a temper and I understood why he jumped to conclusions at times. I just really didn’t like the ultimatums he kept giving Catrin - for good things as well as bad. She can do this or she can do that. Um - how about she can do whatever she wants?! It just irked me some, if I’m honest.

I honestly did like him and I liked the pair together. It was nice the way that each thought they were unworthy of the other for the same reasons - it was cute and I was happy when they got their happily ever after. And that first scene at the lake - oooft!

The mystery element was also a nice touch. There was a small cast of characters to play with but I honestly wasn’t sure who was the ‘big bad’ until it was revealed at the end. It’s not a whodunnit as such but it was a nice gentle mystery that only added to the love story as a whole.

I did really enjoy this book and would recommend it to fans of historical romances, Sabrina Jeffries or who just want to read a love story with a little something extra.

Review for the Second Edition

It pains me to say this, but I don't particularly like this book. The writings is what's expected of the author's, whatever pen-name she writes under; I don't find fault in that. I just can't seem to like the characters in the story!

As much as I get the difficulties for both hero and heroine presented by the storyline, the necessity to be truly frank and suspect the other of something, I couldn't get pass the bully and timid, weak-minded impressions they depicted in my head.

I don't mean Evan physically forced the heroine (he did show some volatile temper later on, but that's beside the point) but his endless coercion didn't feel fine to me. And Catrin... she really failed to impress me with her ever evasive ways to deal with things.

Also grated on my nerves the implication that since the heroine was a widow, her being a virgin was mute anyway so why not deflower her anyway.. wait, what!?!?! That's the most unromantic things a hero could say to his intended!!

I guess the barely intriguing part to follow was the chalice and the curse. Barely. It could've been more interesting if the mystery and how it was solved taken more pages instead of on bedding the virgin than shown here. At least it's good to see how Lady Juliana and Rhys fare after the previous book ended. As far as the current story though, it didn't work that well for me.

As with all of Sabrina’s books, the storytelling is great. If you like curses, Welsh folklore and a little bit of mystery then this is the story for you. I really liked the previous book “Stormswept” but was not terribly enamored with this story. I liked Evan (seeing him all grown up was so nice). Catrin, not so much. Oh, I understand why she told her little fibs but they just kept going on and on. The mystery (and murders) kept me reading. Overall the story was nice, just not thrilling to me.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Book two in Sabrina Jeffries Wales series follows Evan who has grown into a very successful scholar thanks to the kindness and love of his friends Juliana and Rhys, who we met in Stormswept. He is no longer the abused farm hand's son, though he still carries the concerns that he won't be worthy of any woman because of his past. He is out to avenge his friend Justin's murder which leads him to Catrin's doorstep. She was the last to reportedly see his friend and he suspects that she might have had a hand in his murder. What he doesn't expect is a beautiful and enchanting, yet shy woman, who swims in a fabled loch in only her shift. She has been on the hunt for a chalice that a great-great-grandfather sold a few generations ago. She believes that she is cursed and cannot marry until she finds this chalice. She also fears that someone will come looking for her in connection with Justin's death. What she doesn't expect is a well-known scholar seeking her out for assistance with a new book. Sparks fly quickly between the two and both tell lies to protect their secrets. When those lies are discovered they have to work to win the other's trust once more. It was enjoyable. The villain wasn't revealed until the end and the conflict was emotionally tense at times. Evan sometimes came off as a bit too overzealous in his desires for her but as the story progressed the plot strengthened and the book was an enjoyable read. I liked Stormswept more but this was fun and passionate and I liked it.

For the majority of this novel, it wavered between 3.5 and a 4. Then the last 30-50 pages made it a solid 3.5.

This novel is my first Deborah Martin novel but I've read many other novels under the author's other pseudonym, Sabrina Jeffries. In comparison to her other works, this novel had a lot more plot development and character development. The author stated that these books are darker, which I guess they are because they have more murder. And it seems that the author was attempting to write more romantic paranormal mysteries. Overall, the novel was slow but entertaining. I fell in love with Evan and Catrin.

Yet there were times where the writing seemed misplaced and dated. Why not that other half star? The last 30-50 pages were dragged out for no real reason than to try to build tension while wrapping up the plot. As the reader, you're ahead of the characters in the line of deduction. The audience figures out the outcome sooner than the characters minus the minute details. Also, the novels in this series have a very small font size. Normally I can get through one of her novels in a 24-48hour period. But this one took me a bit longer and I wonder the font size had something to do with it. It feels like they packed a 500-600 page novel into 344 pages.

The novel as a whole was and is rough, but that's fine because Jeffries stated that she was preserving the integrity of the novel. She was not going to do any plot changes with this re-release. I can appreciate it as an earlier work and I am glad that Jeffries work has evolved over the years.

This story will make you want to read up on Wales and Welsh mythology. The opening was perfect and hooked me from the start with the tale of the chalice. I loved the mystery and had absolutely no clue who the murderer was or why and was taken by surprise when it was revealed. Catrin and Evan are perfect for each other and definitely have instant chemistry. I loved their first meeting and how they are kind of opposites in many things. The ending was AMAZING! So much happened that made non-believers into believers.

Catrin is so shy but so strong too. She has had so much happen to her that it's easy to understand why she believes in the curse and doesn't trust strangers. I loved her personality and her name. When she needs to take action and protect someone she loves she is powerful. I loved her with the gun.

Evan is not shy at all and is very smart. His past is heartbreaking and has convinced him to never marry, but he is not his past. I loved how he didn't hide what he felt and the way he went about getting her to listen. He did have a bit of an inner battle and didn't see what others saw in him which affected him in many ways.

I wanted to dislike Catrin's father in law, but he proved himself to be a good man in the end. I was so excited to see Juliana and Rhys and how they played into the story.

A family curse, an ancient Druid chalice, a murder most foul, a smattering of Welsh folklore, villains, and two people who are meant for each other made this a very good read. Catrin Price is desperate to find the Druid chalice that is necessary for her to have a long lasting marriage. Her husband must drink from the chalice at their wedding or die within three years. An ancestor sold the chalice, since then four generations of her family have become widows. Unfortunately, Catrin's attempt to buy the chalice results in the murder of the seller. Enter Evan Newcome, a Welsh scholar whose best friend is the murdered man. He intends to find out who is responsible. His search brings him to Catrin. I am a big fan of Sabrina Jefferies and have read just about all of her books. However, this is the first that I have read under her pseudonym, Deborah Martin. I enjoyed it as much as her Sabrina Jefferies books. I look forward to reading the others. I received this eBook from NetGalley for an honest review.

Ancient curses, murder, lies and passion. This is a reissue of a novel originally written under the name Deborah Martin and has been revised by the author. I really loved this book, the heroine Catrin became a widow on her wedding day and a year later discovered that unless the women in her line drank from a particular chalice on their wedding day, their marriage would last less than three years and any sons born to the union would be unable to father children. Ever since she has been left with the guilt that she was the cause of her husband’s death; moving on another four years, she locates the chalice sold by her great-great-grandfather in the C17th but her mission to recover her family’s heirloom sets unseen evil afoot.
Enjoyed the sexual tension between Catrin and Evan. Liked how the curse was resolved. Recommended read.

Windswept was a delightful afternoon read that I could not put down!
It was a nice escape from reality reading about the Lady of the Mist, widowed Catrine Price, and her chalice cursed misfortunes. Plus, meeting Evan Newcome a man searching for his best friends murderer (the last man to have the chalice). While both Catrine and Evan seem to have all sorts of trust issues and fears... what they had undeniably was an unequivocal attraction to one another that leads us on a journey full of mystery, intrigue, more murder and always a favorite of mine... a passionate love affair. So well written, that in a few places I actually had goosebumps when reading this 2nd novel in the Wales series.

This is one of Sabrina Jeffries early works, that she had written under a different name. It is a wonderful story, about a young widow who meets a man who comes looking for her in response to the death of his best friend. He thought he was meeting a old woman when he asked for the Lady of the Mist, not the young shy woman he sees coming out of the pond. Catrin Price is a young Welsh widow who is trying to break a curse that has killed the men in her family for generations. She had bought the chalice from Evan's friend, but left before his murder. Now they have to get past the secrets they have both kept to see if this feeling they have is genuine, as well as avoid whomever actually killed Evan;s friend. I really enjoyed it

Catrin, the Lady of the Mist, has been plagued by a family curse. Before she can marry again, he first husband met his demise because of the curse, she must find the family chalice.

Evan Newcome is looking onto the murder of his best friend. This takes him to Wales in search of a mysterious woman his friend met the night of his death. When he meets her, she is not what he expected to find.

The two find they are not the only ones wanting the chalice. They must work together against those persons and in doing so, eventually fall in love.

I enjoyed this second book in the series. Both books, Stormswept, the first book, and Windswept, were a welcome diversion to the usual works.

Catrin and Evan are used to being judged by others. She is very shy and he is a scholar, but the son of a farmer. They want to be together, but they both are not trusting of others. They both have lied to the other and so the mistrust is understandable. They have to battle a curse and someone trying to steal the chalice from Catrin. Several people have been killed for the chalice and Catrin doesn't want to be one of them. Once they get past the lies and hurt, can their love withstand the curse?

One of Sabrina Jeffries earlier books you can definitely tell a difference in how romance novels have changed over the years. Evan is an older idea of what a romantic hero would be, I still liked him for the most part but I didn’t like that he used Catrin’s desire to seduce her. Yes she was easily seduced but she did have legitimate concerns about giving in to their mutual desire. It was still a good story overall. Not sure I would re-read this book. I checked it out from the library so I am glad I didn’t purchase it

Evan and Catrin's story was fun to read. I liked the mythology behind their story and how it brings them together. There is a bit of drama that added to the storyline. Always enjoy Sabrina Jeffries work.

V knihovně mají jen druhý díl, čert ví proč ne první.
Nicméně, nevadí to, protože to nějak nenavazuje.
Jde o samostatný příběh.
No a jinak? Zajímavý začátek, ale jinak takový průměr, co neurazí, ale ani nenadchne.
Má to působit mysticky, romanticky, ale já z toho nějak celá vedle sebe nebyla.
Čekala jsem něco víc.
