Barren Waters - Part One:

Rate this book
****Note****
This is the first of 5 parts of Barren Waters. The full novel will be released by the end of October, 2016. People have said that reading it in parts can do much to increase the suspense, but others may prefer to wait for the full novel. Either way enjoy!

Teams were assembled to perform CPR on a dying body.

Their efforts failed.

Scientists and engineers were gathered to create state-of-the-art, last-gasp ideas to reverse the irreversible.

Their innovations failed.

The oceans are extinct, empty, stagnant, and poisonous, and only the slow passage of millennia can reverse the effects. But what does that mean for the rest of the planet? What does that mean for those who remain?

Enter the world as it exists in the twenty-second century. Follow Jeremy Colt and his family as they race across the continent in order to survive. What lies in San Diego? Can they get there fast enough? And if they do will it even save her?

The earth's oceans are toxic. Marinelife is all but extinct and the human population is slowly following. Part one of Barren Waters alternates between the story of two scientists studying the devastation taking place in the ocean, dismayed by the lack of results from the government's desperate attempts to revive marine life. The conversations between the scientists sometimes got a little preachy. There's a clear message being delivered about the damage being inflicted by humans on the planet.

The other storyline follows a father and daughter making their way across the country to get needed treatment for the daughter. This storyline includes some flashbacks that also include the mother . The relationships here were heartwarming and there were strong emotions that were absolutely relatable.

I really enjoyed this story. I thought the writing was mature and composed. The author didn't force the action and lets her world's bleak conditions pull the reader in. The story moved at a steady pace and held my interest from start to finish. Looking forward to the rest of the story!

Scary scary scary, for yes, I can see this happening and not necessarily way into in the future. The environmental impacts so well explained actually bothered me more than the people who made life so difficult for the few remaining survivors. The character development wasn't as grand as I would have hoped for, but there were a few character relationships that were quite charming. All in all, I enjoyed the book, although it was a bit short. If I get involved in a good enthralling novel I like for the tome to be a nice healthy one that's going to last me a number of days. Regardless, kudos to the author, I enjoyed the book and would like to read more particularly those she may write on this genre.

I believe this book needs to be read by everyone including our Government..This opens your eyes to what could and may happen to our world..Our survival depends on water and once our rivers, lakes and oceans go so will so much more..
I enjoyed every bit of this and the story of liam Olivia their children and grandchildren with the story adding liam and Sam’s fight to survive in a world where everything is dying and trying to find the meds they so desperately need…Their race against time to save Sam’s life to a place many thousands of miles away which could or could not be there to save her..

Wonderful!

I truly enjoyed this book. The writers of the walking dead could take notes from Ms. Shupe! There can still be hope and love in the face of tragedy. The many twists and turns had me hooked the whole time. I would love to see this as a movie. Can't wait to read more from this author. Sk

Is humanity doomed? Will all life survive in the ocean.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written futuristic post-apocalyptic tale book. It wasn’t very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great post-apocalyptic tale movie, animated cartoon, or a mini TV series. Not sure I really grasped any of this story content. That said I can only rate it at 3/5 stars.

Jeremy and his daughter have left their home in the mountains for a long and dangerous trek across the country to the city of San Diego. Sam aches to see the ocean but after years of dumping chemicals out to sea the marine life finally gave up. The entire planet’s water table has been destroyed, leaving no freshwater or marine life within their depths.
The story is reminiscent of McCarthy’s The Road, with the father and daughter pair travelling in a desolate world where the Earth is dying. The concept of the post-apocalyptic story is sound and the research that would have gone into developing the more scientific (sci-fi) parts must have been huge because it was certainly realistic to read. I do feel that the book needs another edit just to tighten the plot and make it flow better but on the whole, it works.
