Greg Abbott: The Kindle Singles Interview

Rate this book
It has been only two years since Greg Abbott ascended to Rick Perry’s throne as the new Republican Governor of Texas , but he has already caught the attention of political prognosticators who predict that a certain presumptive presidential nominee might pick him as his vice president. That’s in part because of Abbott’s impeccable conservative credentials; in part because of his marriage to a Hispanic woman; and, yes, in part because he has been in a wheelchair since being in a tragic accident at the age of 26 — that last factor a compelling piece of evidence of Abbott’s courage in the face of a seemingly insurmountable obstacle to political success. Abbott quickly rose in Texas politics from state Supreme Court judge to solicitor general to attorney general, before becoming governor in 2014.

In a wide-ranging interview, Abbott – as staunch a defender of the Constitution as you’ll ever meet – repeatedly attacked the U.S. Supreme Court, the current Congress and President Obama as regular violators of its strict division of responsibilities, and advocated powerfully for adherence to its core principles. He also shared his strong-willed views on immigration, higher-quality pre-K education, and the virtues of the Texas-based What-A-Burger chain. He even defended his controversial support for the necessity of barbeque sauce.

The interview was conducted by David Blum, who works for Amazon as the editor of Kindle Singles. He began his career as a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal, and has been the editor-in-chief of The Village Voice, the New York Press and 02138 Magazine. He was previously a writer and editor at The New York Times Magazine, and a contributing editor at New York and Esquire magazines. He has written two "Flash in the The Life and Death of an American Restaurant" (1992), and " The Long Life & Turbulent Times of 60 Minutes" (2004).
