프루스트 이전 소설들의 종착지이자, 프루스트 이후 소설들의 출발점이 될 만큼 문학사에 빼놓을 수 없는 작품. 모두 7편에 이르는 연작 소설로서, 그 분량을 합하면 몇천 쪽에 이르는 방대한 작품이다. 국내에서는 최초로 '프루스트 전공자'인 김희영 한국외국어대학교 교수가 프루스트 전공자로서 사명감과 용기를 가지고 번역에 모든 정열과 노력을 쏟은 작품이다.

「타임스」, 「르 몽드」 등 세계 유력 일간지에서 20세기 최고의 소설로 꼽히며, 엘리엇, 모루아, 발레리, 베케트, 보부아르 같은 거장들뿐만 아니라 들뢰즈, 리비에르, 벤야민 등의 비평가, 철학자들에게도 큰 영향을 끼친 소설이다. 17∼18세기 소설들이 인간 내면보다는 인간이 몸담고 있는 사회의 모습과 거대한 자연의 힘을 담아내려고 했다면, 프루스트는 오로지 '인간' 그리고 그 인간 '의식의 흐름' 그 자체에 생각과 펜을 맡긴 채 유례없이 장대하고 유려한 대작을 완성해 냈다.

1985년 국내에서 처음으로 번역된 판본(1954년 판)과는 달리, 1987년 프랑스 플레이아드 전집 판으로 새롭게 출간된 판본을 번역본으로 삼았으며, 현재까지도 계속되고 있는 프루스트 연구자들의 주석 작업, 그리고 중국과 일본 등 여러 국가 판본들을 비교, 참고해서 진행하는, 그야말로 프루스트의 '정본'이라고 할 만한 번역본이다.

역자 김희영 교수는 이번 번역 작업을 통해 길고 난해한 프루스트의 문장을 최대한 존중하여 텍스트의 미세한 떨림을 살리는 데 중점을 두었다고 밝혔으며, 독자의 이해와 작품의 올바른 수용을 위해 최대한 많은 주석 작업을 통해 문화적, 예술적 차이를 극복하고자 했다고 말한다.

Marcel Proust was a French novelist, best known for his 3000 page masterpiece À la recherche du temps perdu (Remembrance of Things Past or In Search of Lost Time), a pseudo-autobiographical novel told mostly in a stream-of-consciousness style.

Born in the first year of the Third Republic, the young Marcel, like his narrator, was a delicate child from a bourgeois family. He was active in Parisian high society during the 80s and 90s, welcomed in the most fashionable and exclusive salons of his day. However, his position there was also one of an outsider, due to his Jewishness and homosexuality. Towards the end of 1890s Proust began to withdraw more and more from society, and although he was never entirely reclusive, as is sometimes made out, he lapsed more completely into his lifelong tendency to sleep during the day and work at night. He was also plagued with severe asthma, which had troubled him intermittently since childhood, and a terror of his own death, especially in case it should come before his novel had been completed. The first volume, after some difficulty finding a publisher, came out in 1913, and Proust continued to work with an almost inhuman dedication on his masterpiece right up until his death in 1922, at the age of 51.

Today he is widely recognized as one of the greatest authors of the 20th Century, and À la recherche du temps perdu as one of the most dazzling and significant works of literature to be written in modern times.

화자의 의식의 흐름을 따라가보려고 애썼다. 동시대 같은 문화권 사람들에겐 공감을 얻었으려나. 솔직히 난 공감하며 읽기 어렵던데. 내 의식의 흐름이 궁금하지 않은 사람에게 지금 떠오르는 내 마구잡이 생각들을 들려주면 이런 기분이지 않을까싶다.

민음사 일력에서 마음에 드는 글귀에 좋아요 하는데 “잃어버린 시간을 찾아서”에 나온 문구가 많길래 읽어보기로 했다.
총7편, 13권이라서 후회 중이긴 한데 일단 시작했으니 첫 권은 읽자 싶어서 계속 읽는 중이다. 회사에서 틈틈이 읽고 있는데 내용이 이해가진 않는다. 문장이 예쁘긴 한데 그래서 어쩌라고 싶다. 화자가 너무 오이디푸스 콤플렉스 같다. 엄마한테 왜 이렇게 집착해…

솔직하게 말해서, 도데체 뭘 말하려고 하는것인지 심지어 내가 무엇을 읽은것인지 잘모르겠다. 전혀 헛소리는 아니고 문장은 미려하고 아름답지만 1권을 끝날때까지 이 책에게서 무엇을 발견했는지 모르겠다.
